'Ingenting utanför / Nothing Beyond? is another collaboration between Mårten Jansson and the Swedish poet Einar Askestad. This a cappella choral work deals with sorrow and loss. After a forceful, harmonically ambiguous section and a clear break in the music, the piece ends with a comforting decrescendo of reconciliation. It was commissioned by the Uppsala female choir 'La Cappella? and is dedicated to its choral director Tony Margeta.'My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as 'so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings' but also as 'the happiest classical music that we have ever heard'.My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.'Mårten Jansson (b. 1965), elected member of the Föreningen svenska tonsättare (the Society of Swedish Composers), graduated from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm (KHM) with an MFA degree in Music Education, Dalcroze Eurhythmics and Voice. Trade Winds, in the form of a march, is reminiscent of a shanty, conjuring up seafaring and the tradewinds. Becalmed, harmonically and melodically almost static, depicts the doldrums. Par LAMBERT RICHARD. 3 movement sonata in a modern style The Sonata for euphonium and piano was written in 2013, an idiomatic transcription of the Sonata for bassoon and piano (Op.36) Lasting about 13 minutes, it has three movements: Allegro Moderato - Larghetto - Allegretto con spirito. The first movement is free-ranging tonally, continually developing the initial thematic material - a neo-Baroque motif with prominent use of a minor seventh interval. The time signature is continually changing, predominantly between 2/4 and 3/8, to give a highly-charged rhythmic, and perhaps unsettled, effect. The central movement is expressive, melancholy and desolate. The rhythm is more regular here - largely a steady 6/8 flow, butharmonically, the highly chromatic style is almost atonal to enhance this forlorn atmosphere. The movement explores the entire range of the euphonium and the piano accompaniment converses contrapuntally, sharing the numerous motifs with the euphonium. It concludes plaintively with reiterations of the euphonium's initial four notes. The finale reverts to a more relaxed, and uplifting, mood. The euphonium's initial scalic motif also has a neo-Baroque flavour. This originates from a solitary piano figure (bar 202) in the first movement. In fact, these outer movements have numerous melodic and harmonic links to consolidate a sense of overall organic shape. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume. Par LISZT FRANZ. In summer 1881 Franz Liszt composed a work that he called “ Valse Oubliée ” (Forgotten waltz) in a letter to his publisher. The work is reminiscent of the appealing Piano waltzes that the composer usedto write when he was younger – although there is a certain distance to the usual waltz style. Liszt by no means renounces virtuosity and elegance, but rather infuses these characteristics with nostalgia and irony byembedding typical melodic and rhythmic elements of salon waltzes in innovative, harmonically alienating progressions.
