The
melancholic tone of the
Ney (the Persian bamboo
flute) is known for its
alluring sound, emulating
the human voice. In
Persian literature, the
Ney is considered a
mystic instrument capable
of expressing deep human
emotions. In writing my
flute concerto, I aimed
not only to highlight the
modern flautist's ability
to play agile and
brilliant passages but
also to emulate the
delicate sound of the
Ney, particularly in
extended solo flute
passages. Two prominent
characters permeate the
first movement of my
concerto. They are marked
in the score as
lamentoso, and con
spirito, expressing grief
and loss, and joy of
living respectively. The
lament is mostly
expressed in several
extended cadenzas for
solo flute while the con
spirito consists of
robust and energetic fast
sections played by all
forces of the orchestra.
Apart from these two
characters there are
moments of mystery,
comedy and the grotesque,
among others. In the
second movement, the
lyrical and poetic
character of the flute is
prominently presented in
dream-like passages
surrounded by shimmering
and tender orchestral
colors. The solo flute is
left out in an agitated
middle section that
references the first
movement. In the third
section of the movement
the solo flute returns in
meditative fashion
culminating in a duet
with the harp. The third
movement is written as
one continuous quasi
scherzo, challenging the
limits of agility and
brilliance of the flute.
Some of the materials
from the earlier
movements are presented
again with joyous
character. The coda
elevates the concerto
into its brightest and
most festive character,
driving to the end with
relentless energy. The

With the
final verse of the Book
of Daniel from the Old
Testament and a related
cantata text, Telemann
mourns the death of a
prominent, but until now
unknown dignitary in a
cantata marked by great
intimacy and with
exquisite
instrumentation. Jakob
Ditmar, the Kantor of the
Nikolaikirche in Berlin,
to whom we owe the
survival of this work,
contributed two beautiful
chorale settings for a
performance in 1757.

Jan Dismas
Zelenka's Missa Sancti
Josephi occupies a key
position among his circa
twenty large masses. In
this mass, probably
composed in 1732 for a
feast of a Saint (thus,
without a Credo), for the
first time the composer
took up the operatic
style of Johann Adolf
Hasse - the latter had
first performed his opera
Cleofide in Dresden in
1731. Zelenka's
unmistakable
individuality created a
completely independent
work with great technical
demands which in many
details presages the
important masses among
his late works. The sole
source for the first
edition of this mass,
published here for the
first time, is a
considerably damaged
autograph score which. It
is preserved in the
Sachsische Landes- und
Universitatsbibliothek
Dresden. For the Carus
edition the experienced
Zelenka scholar Wolfgang
Horn has expertly
reconstructed the missing
passages. Score and parts

The
parable of the
unforgiving servant
(Matthew 18:21‚35)
inspired Ken to write
this contemporary
folk-style piece that
calls us to pardon
offenses and reflect
God‚ presence. The
verses make use of cantor
and two-part women‚
choir and the refrain
features SATB choir. The
well-crafted oboe line
gently soars over the
minimal
instrumentation.
