Arbeiten, die ich nicht
verleugnen mag (etwa die
Schubert-Variationen ) -
zusammen mit Souvenir und
Funf Strophen wohl mein
Opus 1, mit einer
ahnlichen zugleich
abschliessend
ruckblickenden und
aufbrechend
vorwartsblickenden Rolle,
die etwa Bergs
Klaviersonate oder
Weberns Passacaglia in
deren Schaffen spielte.
Ich war gepragt und
fasziniert von der
Reinheit und Konsequenz
des damaligen
nonfigurativen
Vokalsatzes meines
Lehrers Nono, bei welchem
die Tone als gehaltene
wahrend ihrer Dauer in
fliessende
Intervallbeziehungen
zueinander treten, wobei
diese uber flexible
Dynamik und Klang-
beziehungsweise
Vokalfarben noch weiter
innerlich artikuliert und
hierarchisch abgestuft
werden. Mein Vorhaben,
von solcher Praxis bei
der Entwicklung eines
Klaviersatzes auszugehen
(Nono hat damals
wohlweislich nichts fur
Klavier, uberhaupt kaum
etwas fur Soloinstrumente
geschrieben), war bewusst
ein Versuch am
widerspenstigen Objekt,
wo doch der Klavierklang
permanent unter den
Handen zerrinnt. Den
standig fliehenden Ton
als Komponente von sich
auf-, ab- und umbauenden
Intervallstrukturen
rechtzeitig zu nutzen und
gerade dadurch den
stereotypen
Diminuendo-Charakter
zugleich bewusst zu
machen und wenn schon
nicht zu uberwinden, so
doch immer wieder zu
uberlisten unter
Einbeziehung von Pedal-
und Flageolett-Techniken
(mittels stumm gedruckter
Tasten), aber auch durch
Einbeziehung von tonalen
Konsonanzen als horbar
gemachten
Obertonspektren, fuhrte
zu Ergebnissen, in denen
der Ausgangswiderspruch
sich selbst thematisierte
und die Form des Stuckes
regelte. Andererseits
fuhrte solche
Auseinandersetzung mit
dem Vorbild Nono zugleich
von dessen Idiom weg zu
einem Klangdenken, in dem
Struktur nicht Mittel zu
expressiven Zwecken,
sondern Expressivitat als
vorweg Gegebenes, den
Mitteln bereits
Anhaftendes, zum
Ausgangspunkt fur
strukturelle Abenteuer

The present
volume of the Sibelius
Complete Edition contains
seven orchestral works,
five of which Jean
Sibelius originally
composed as stage music
but later separated from
the incidental-music
connection to be
performed as individual
compositions in concerts.
The tone poem Finlandia
Op. 26 originates from
the Music for the Press
Celebration Days (JS 137,
1899). Valse triste and
Scen med tranorna (Scene
with the Cranes, Op. 44
Nos. 1 and 2) were
composed for the 1903
premiere of Arvid
Jarnefelt's play Kuolema
(Death, incidental music
JS 113); Canzonetta and
Valse romantique (Op. 62a
and 62b) were additions
to a 1911 stage
production of Kuolema.
The two waltzes under the
opus number 96, Valse
lyrique (Op. 96a) and
Valse chevaleresque (Op.
96c), are orchestral
versions of works also
known as compositions for
piano. Of the works only
Scen med tranorna
remained unpublished
during Sibelius's
lifetime. It was also
probably intended to be
published - the autograph
score is preserved under
Breitkopf & Hartel tenure
in the Sachsisches
Staatsarchiv in Leipzig -
but the first edition of
the score and the parts
were not printed until
1973. This print was made
from a scribal copy by an
unknown copyist, and the
edition of Scen med
tranorna based on
Sibelius's autograph is
available for the first
time in the present
volume.

Switzerland. He himself
studied with Bernhard

the aesthetics of the New

historical-critical Erich
Schmid Edition publishes
for the first time all
sixteen opus-numbered
works as well as three
additional piano works.
The playfully inventive
cycle for voice, piano
and string quartet,
dedicated to his
“dear wifeâ€
Martha, brings together
short compositions
written in 1937-40.
“These are,â€
says Schmid, “12
small pieces in a wide
variety of
instrumentation and
different forms - some of
them twelve-tone pieces,
some of them in a
technique that comes
close. An attempt to
write music that is
technically easier to
perform.†The
arch-like overall form
combines folksong-like
vocal numbers on text
from “Des Knaben
Wunderhorn†with
solo pieces, quartet
movements and
counterpoint art on the
name of
“BACH†and
expresses Schmid's view

Suite No. 1 is an
interesting hybrid that
conveys the most modern
compositional structure
in the genre of light
music. Schmid composed it
shortly after the end of
his year as a master
student of Schönberg
in Berlin. Like his other
works of the time, its
unusual instrumentation
already shows an effort
to move on from classical
“high formsâ€
and compose in looser
structures, with the free
use of the twelve-tone
technique providing inner
coherence.

University in Jonesboro,
Arkansas, USA, where she
teaches oboe and bassoon,
Double Reed Techniques,

Lucarelli Oboe Master

immersive oboe master
class founded by Bert
Lucarelli in 1996. As a
guest artist she has
presented master classes
at many institutions,
