Mozart no
doubt proved a powerful
source of inspiration in
the genre of the piano
concerto when Ludwig van
Beethoven was composing
his first work in this
genre (B-flat major op.
19) in Bonn. In 1793 the
young composer first
wrote a final rondo with
an inserted Andante, as
Mozart had done in his
Concerto K. 482.
Beethoven then selected a
different closing
solution and kept the
score of the B-flat major
Rondo in his desk. There
the work was rediscovered
only after the composers
death, and printed
shortly afterward. The
autograph thus represents
Beethovens earliest
surviving and complete
orchestral score. The new
Urtext edition of the
score and orchestral
parts is based on the new
Beethoven Complete
Edition (Henle).

Joseph Haydn's E flat
major concerto Hob VIIe:1
(1796), Hummel's Trumpet
Concerto in E major of
1803 was also written for
the Viennese soloist
Anton Weidinger, who
performed on a keyed
trumpet that could
produce the chromatic
tones of an entire scale
a unique achievement at
that time. The work
features unmistakable
allusions to Mozart and
even has a literal quote
from a Cherubini opera in
the final movement.
Today, Hummel's concerto,
next to the Haydn piece,
is considered as THE
classical trumpet
concerto. It is no doubt
thanks to this unique
status that the work has
been available in a
transposition to E flat
major since 1957, a
version that better suits
the B flat trumpet widely
used today. The Urtext
edition respects this
performance-practical
aspect: The piano
reduction as well as the
study score contain both
versions. The score and
orchestral parts can be
obtained in two different
editions.While this being
one of the few urtext, it
may be the only edition
published in both the
original tonality of E
major and the
often-preferred key of
E-flat major.

One could
say that Michael Kuhn's
cadenzas to Mozart's
beloved Double Concerto
K. 299 went directly from
the concert stage to the
publisher, and from the
publisher back to
performers. Commissioned
by the Concentus Musicus
Wien, they were recorded
on CD in 1998 under the
direction of Nikolaus
Harnoncourt. Although the
musicians played on
original instruments
(transverse flute and
single-action pedal
harp), the cadenzas can
be executed just as
effectively on modern
instruments. For his
work, Kuhn took as his
guideline the original
cadenzas Mozart wrote for
his Sinfonia concertante
K. 364 and his Concerto
for two pianos and
orchestra K. 365, which
date from about the same
time. Kuhn's new edition
should be seen as an
alternative to Carl
Reinecke's popular
cadenzas (EB 6859), which
continue to be available
from Breitkopf &

Even today, concert life
is hard to imagine
without the Introduction
et Rondo capriccioso. The
highly virtuosic work
already inspired critics
and audiences during the
composer's lifetime;
reported about the
premiere in 1867 was: The
Introduction and the
Rondo capriccioso for the
same instrument are both
original and charming,
and Maestro Sarasate, who
was in his element here,
admirably made the most
of it. And a few years
later, a music critic
described the work as a
kind of fantasy waltz in
the Spanish style and
with a most bewitching
effect. After the first
performances in 1867,
despite success, the
work's score and
orchestral parts had
little chance of
publication due to
concert companies'
reluctance. In 1869 the
Paris publishing house G.
Hartmann merely published
an arrangement for violin
and piano produced by the
composer's friend Georges
Bizet. The orchestral
score and parts were
first published after the
Paris publishing house
Durand had acquired
publication rights in
1875. The present edition
published in
collaboration with the G.

Like every
other great 19th-century
solo concerto, Dvorak's
famous Cello Concerto was
a collaboration between
composer and virtuoso. It
has long been known that
certain solo passages in
Dvorak's autograph score
were actually written by
the cellist Hanus Wihan;
but Barenreiter's edition
now reveals that some
details in the orchestral
parts are also in his
writing, showing just how
closely the two musicians
were working
together.
The
editor Jonathan Del Mar
has painstakingly
examined all the
surviving sources,
including two that have
hitherto been either
ignored or crucially
undervalued, in order to
produce an authoritative

Mozart is
believed to have written
an oboe concerto for the
Salzburg virtuoso
Giuseppe Ferlendis in
1777. The work was
considered lost until
1920, when Bernhard
Paumgartner discovered a
copy of the parts that
must have been written

more unreliable than the

Concerto was written for
Olaf Ott, principal
trombonist with the
Berlin Philharmonic. The
concerto is in
traditional
three-movement form and
the whole work could be
seen as a dramatic
soliloquy for the
soloist, who starts in
earnest and agitated mood
but, as the concerto
progresses, is able to
take a more optimistic
tone before ending the
work with what could be
called a “symphonic
samba.†Movement 1
begins darkly until the
solo part introduces a
more positive theme -
only to be
“overruledâ€
by a faster, troubled
accompaniment; the
movement closes over a
sombre drum ostinato.
Movement 2 opens with a
heartfelt
“plea†in the
accompaniment that is
echoed by the soloist,
who then plays a simple
chorale melody
introducing a delicate
central section. A
chant-like tune leads to
a joyous climax,
heralding a return of the
opening material.
Movement 3 casts all
troubles aside in a
joyful samba - a
jazz-influenced central
tune explores the higher
ranges of the trombone
before the samba rhythms
set up a
“contestâ€
between trombone and
piano. The soloist is the
eventual
“winner†(of
course) and celebrates by
reintroducing the samba
melody before bringing
the work to a virtuosic
