Cantata for Mezzosoprano and Orchestra. Par THEODORAKIS MIKIS. Sung texts are in Greek; English, German and French translations are included. A good friend of mine, the poet lacovos Kambanellis, was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War II. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time under the title of 'Mauthausen'. In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and gave me the opportunity to set them to music. I did this with much pleasure, firstly, because I liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly, because I myself was detained in Italian and German prisons during the Nazi occupation, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, of events that must never be forgotten. First and foremost, of course, the Mauthausen Cantata is addressed to all those who suffered under Fascism and fought against it. We must keep the Nazi crimes continually in our minds, because that is the only guarantee and the only way to assure that they are not repeated. And we can see every day that the ghost of Fascism is far from being laid. It seldom shows its real face, but Fascist cultures and mentalities exist all over the world. Par PEPIN CAMILLE. Il s'agit d'un cycle de mélodies pour mezzo-soprano, violoncelle et piano - commande de l'Association Olivier Messiaen au pays de la Meije - dédié à Anne Le Bozec, Yan Levionnois et Fiona McGown. Ce choix autour de la danse m'est venu à la lecture de cette phrase du poète américain Ezra Pound (1885-1972) - chef de file du mouvement imagiste et moderniste - dans son ABC of Reading : 'Music begins to atrophy when it departs too far from the dance... poetry begins to atrophy when it goes too far from music ('La musique commence à s'atrophier lorsqu'elle s'éloigne trop de la danse... La poésie commence à s'atrophier lorsqu'elle s'éloigne trop de la musique'). C'est cette phrase qui m'a inspirée pour les Dancing Poems. Les quatre mélodies de ce cycle ont été composées d'après les poèmes At the still-point de Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965), Slow Movement de William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), To a child dancing in the wind et Those dancing days are gone de William Butler Yeats (1865-1939). Véritablement pensée avec un rapport au corps, ma façon de concevoir le rythme est plus spontanée qu'intellectualisée. J'ai besoin de sentir intérieurement une rythmique - corporellement - avant de la coucher sur le papier. Musique et danse sont ainsi intimement liées. Pour moi, composer, c'est quelque part le point de rencontre entre la musique, la danse et la poésie - le point où chacune de ces disciplines est indissociable l'une de l'autre. Aussi, mon choix s'est porté sur la littérature anglo-saxonne, que Fiona McGown pratique à merveille et qui en fait ressortir toute la musique des mots. J'ai alors imaginé son timbre magnifique entremêlé à celui du violoncelle - instrument que j'aime tout particulièrement. Dans tout le cycle, l'enjeu a été de créer une ambiance intime et lumineuse. Les couleurs et les timbres se mélangent de manière à créer un halo sonore résonnant et flottant autour ces trois instruments. Ainsi, le halo contribue à recréer ce point particulier de rencontre entre la musique, la danse et la poésie - un point hors du temps libéré des tensions du monde. Le cycle est également imprégné de rythmes répétitifs et dansants, et les mélodies sont construites sur des formes simples utilisant des refrains. Cela confère à l'ensemble une couleur populaire, propre à l'expression de la danse. La première mélodie, At the still-point, cherche à retranscrire cet état de transe par un accompagnement répétitif où piano et violoncelle se mélangent pour créer une texture planante. Il est conçu comme un moteur essentiel au sein duquel le mouvement est toujours présent. Sa répétition permet toutefois de conserver une immobilité apparente. La voix, sensuelle, se déploie sur ce tapis sonore brumeux et flottant. Point d'équilibre fragile, ce still point n'est donc ni en suspens, ni en mouvement : il est les deux à la fois. C'est le moment où le temps s'arrête et où nous nous retrouvons immergés dans nos propres mondes. J'ai imaginé certains vers comme un refrain, rappelant régulièrement l'équilibre subtil et délicat de ce still point. La seconde mélodie, Slow Movement, est le mouvement lent du cycle et évoque les souvenirs - ces trésors que l'on peut enfermer une boîte. J'ai donc choisi d'utiliser la voix parlée. Seuls le début et la fin sont fredonnés (éteint, sans timbrer) comme un écho au thème de violoncelle. Violoncelle et piano prennent tour à tour la parole pour chanter l'expression des mots déclamés dans ce numéro. Les deux dernières mélodies évoquent successivement l'enfance et la vieillesse. To a child dancing in the wind décrit un enfant dansant sur le rivage, insouciant des sons menaçants qui l'entourent. Le fracas incessant des vagues, les hurlements du vent, ou encore les gouttes d'eau salée qui perlent de ses cheveux sont autant d'images des évènements de la vie qui nous assaillent. Le rugissement du vent et le déferlement des vagues semblent être une allusion aux injustices et au désordre de la vie ('L'amour est perdu aussitôt qu'il est gagné et l'imbécile triomphe'). Toutefois, l'imbécile peut être une personne motivée par l'amour et ne se souciant pas du reste. 'Le meilleur ouvrier est mort', mais il était peut-être le meilleur parce qu'il a travaillé avec amour. Ce poème parle donc à la fois de l'insouciance de l'enfance, et de l'expérience de la maturité. J'ai choisi de transcrire en musique cette insouciance de l'enfant qui danse, cette incarnation de la vie dans le moment présent, en un véritable moment vif et dansant. De plus en plus apaisée, la danse s'achève et nous ramène à la réalité du monde adulte avec la dernière mélodie du cycle. Ici, Yeats fait allusion aux moments heureux qui ont pris fin. Les jours dansants sont terminés. L'épouse et les enfants ont disparu. Un corps enveloppé dans un haillon sale évoque aussi bien la mort que l'éclat de vie perdu. La boucle rythmique utilisée traduit avec mélancolie et sensualité les heureux jours disparus. Les vers 'I carry the sun in a golden cup, the moon in a silver bag' à la fin de chaque strophe sont utilisés comme un refrain. Ils portent à la fois l'idée du rayonnement du soleil comme éclat de vie et de l'ombre de la lune qui tombe délicatement dessus comme un voile mystérieux. Das Liederspiel. Par HUMPERDINCK ENGELBERT. When Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel was premiered on 23 December 1893 in Weimar conducted by Richard Strauss, the work could look back on an extensive history of origin. Humperdinck’s younger sister Adelheid Wette (born in 1858) had displayed a great interest in literature in her youth and written a variety of poems for special occasions. In 1888, she wrote a fairy tale entitled Schneewittchen [Snow White] and her brother supplied some songs for this piece. Further fairy tale collaborations followed which were customarily performed within the family circle, and the first draft of the Hänsel und Gretel was begun in 1890. Adelheid’s husband would be celebrating his 34th birthday on 16 May of this year and his wife intended to surprise him with a performance of her version of this fairy tale. Her brother was allotted the task of composing the accompanying songs and, a month before the birthday, she wrote a letter to him in Mainz where Engelbert Humperdinck was among other activities working as an editor for the Schott publishing house, ordering a “very pretty folkloric” Tanzlied [Dance song], a Waldlied [Forest song] (or Echolied [Echo song]), a Schlummerlied [Lullaby] and a Kickericki-Lied [Cock-a-doodle-doo song] from her “dear sugar-sweet little brother... Engel-Bärtchen [angel beard]”. She enclosed the corresponding verses with the letter and “for fun” also provided her own invented melody for the Schlummerlied and rhythmic suggestions for the Tanzlied. Humperdinck went straight to work and, as related in an entry in his diary, was already able to play the songs to the director of the publishing house, Dr Ludwig Strecker, by 19 April. This was the history of origin of the four songs published for the first time edited in form of their original versions in this edition Brüderchen komm’ tanz’ mit mir, Wer ruft mir im Walde doch alles nach, In den Zweigen die Vögelein und Tirelireli! ‘s ist nicht mehr früh “for two children’s voices and piano accompaniment” (see manuscript1). In his reply letter to his sister in which the fair copy of the songs were enclosed, Humperdinck wrote: “As you see, the pitch of the melodies is not too high and I have incorporated your melodies. Let me know soon whether you like the little songs. By the way, the ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ can also be sung on one note (E flat) instead of on the four notes of the chord.” The first performance of the song-play was held as planned within the family circle with Wettes’ two eldest daughters in the two principle roles. Spurred on by the success of the family performance, initial plans were forged to adapt the song-play into a singspiel with numerous musical numbers and rhymed dialogues; Hermann Wette participated in a draft of the text. The particell of this singspiel had been completed by Christmas 1890. Hugo Wolf and a few others however advised the composer to extend the singspiel into a through-composed fairy tale opera. Humperdinck followed this advice and worked on what he ironically termed as a “Kinderstubenweihfestspiel“ [sacred festive play for the nursery] during the next two summers in Bayreuth. In her work she often meets people who walk in the shadow of death and her dealings and thoughts about this are a central part of her writing. This is most clearly seen in “Mörkblå tillit” whose key message is to trust that we will be safe and secureafter passing away in sleep. Jansson’s intention with the music was to enhance this feeling of comforting trust without taking away the seriousness of the subject. “Triptyk” on the other hand describes a journey within a person in three stages which moves from despair, “God, myGod why have I forsaken myself?”, through to hope and faith that God is within.
