This concert overture, which has the air of a symphonic poem, takes its inspiration from an ancient Roman bridge. A massive introduction, a threatening allegro and alternating virtuoso and chorale themes quickly succeed each other. Trombones and trumpets introduce a rhythmical theme which develops throughout all instrument groups. The allegro is characterised by a quasi-obsessive cadence which depicts a Roman army constantly beating time.

Ponte Romano (Römische Brücke) wurde von Jan Van der Roost im Auftragdes Blasorchesters von Pont-Saint-Martin geschrieben, einer kleinen Gemiende im auonomen französischen Teil des Aosta-Tals im Nordwesten Italiens. Er schrieb das Stück anlässlich des 100. Jubiläums des Orchesters und es ist Walter Chenuil, dem Dirigenten, und Claudio Porté, dem Vizedirigenten, gewidmet. Die Uraufführung von Ponte Ramono fand am 27. Mai 2000 in Pont-Saint-Martin statt.Die weite, bergige und auch rauhe Umgebung bildet die Kulisse für eine beeindruckende römische Brücke in der Mitte des Dorfes. Diese jahrhundertealte Brücke inspirierte den Komponisten zu dieserKonzert-Ouvertür e, die mit ihrem programmatischen Thema wie eine sinfonische Dichtung wirkt. Auf einen kraftvollen Anfang folgt ein bedrohliches Allegro, welches zwischen virtuosen und choralähnlichen Themen abwechselt. Dann wird ein drittes, rhytmisches Thema von Posaunen und Trompeten eingeführt und später in allen Orchesterteilen entwickelt. Man könnte sagen, dass der ganze Allegro-Teil einen fast zwanghaft quälenden Rhythmus hat, als ob eine (römische) Armee ständig im Gleichschritt marschierte.

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the flute. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that his compositions for the instrument are at the forefront of the flute's repertoire, Romance being no exception. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opera, he was appointed as professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as principal conductor of leading orchestras. It was during this time that Gaubert composed, including his Romance which premiered in 1905. Addressing many technical features, including flourishing semiquaver passages, a wide range, emotion, intervals, chromaticism and complex rhythms, Romance for Flute and Piano is a challenging yet riveting and stirring piece for aspiring flautists.
