Bartók' s 'Romanian Christmas Songs' are based on folk melodies that originated in a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, and which he felt gave ' the impression of a fiery, war-like type of song, rather than a pious and religious one”. Nevertheless, he chose 20 melodies from this collection of ' colinde” and published them under the title of ' Christmas Songs”. In the first edition of 1918 they were conceived for children' s hands and so were published ' without octaves”- but in his revised edition of 1936, which we present here, Bartók added an appendix featuring alternative ' concert versions”, confirming that these miniatures are also perfectly suited for public performance. Our Urtext edition is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition, and for the first time integrates these concert variants directly into the musical text. In preparation for Carol Wincenc's landmark Naumburg Award Recital at New York's Lincoln Center, she asked composer Daniel Paget to create a work drawn from the world of wonderful Romanian folk music for nai, or panpipes. The result was Romania!, Fantasy for Flute and Piano, a duet suggestive of both the nai and the cimbalom (hammered dulcimer). The work is a brilliant tip-of-the-hat to Wincenc's Austro-Hungarian heritage and her inner tzigane-style temperament. Great care has been taken to select dynamics and articulations that allow the phrases to make the best use of the flute's capabilities, given the rich harmonic language typical of this part of the world. Filled withmeltingly beautiful lyricism and dazzling technical gestures, this new edition is bound to bring years of enjoyment to all those who have it. Serie Ii. Par BARTOK BELA. What distinguishes Béla Bartók from most of his European contemporaries is his lifelong dedication to folk music. He began to look into Hungarian peasant music out of musical interest only, but gradually extended his research to the neighbouring countries' folk music to study relatedness and differences, origins and influences. Bartók started to collect Romanian folk tunes in 1908, in 1915 he adapted them to be played on the piano – his 'Romanian Christmas Carols' (UE 5890). This edition of sheet music provides the rewarding opportunity to plan a concert quite different to every other Christmas concert. This arrangement of Bartók's varied composition makes full use of a saxophone quartet's abundant acoustic possibilities. The colourful pieces will enhance the saxophone quartet repertoire.
