'Originally written for a suite called Silver Poetry, a Suite on Australian Images, for German flautist Christiane Meininger, whose specially designed flute bears that name ('Poesie in Silber?), this short piece was composed on the day I went for a walk in Russell Falls in Tasmania, and I encountered the small pink breasted robin, a rare tiny and very pretty bird. It had such a charming aura about it as well as something very theatrical in the way it just took off in a flash. This piece has something of a circus character.? Those were the words that led me on the composition of this short piece: an assemblage of a variety of little motifs, chords and textures, heard progressively in different combinations, separately or together, across the two mirror duos of percussionists that compose the quartet. Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's friend, the cellist Jules Desart, was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the cello part into the piano score of the original edition. For this purpose the piano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to 'Sonate pour piano et violon ou violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for piano and violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter's new scholarly-critical publication.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes a separate movement, 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911, again for the same instrumentation, piano and violin or violoncello. O'Shaughnessy, adapted by Jessica Duchen.Composer's NoteWhen the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain requested a short piece for their gala concert at Birmingham's Symphony Hall, I was particularly excited about the prospect of writing for 300 singers. A recent research trip to Estonia resulted in somewhat of a revelation: having heard and seen their world-renowned choirs in action (literally!) has resulted in We are the Music-Makers having the less mainstream 'surround-sound' of upper voices/junior choir at the back and sides of the audience and a further stereophonic double-choir on stage.This poem was sent to me by Tim Williams (my ex Head of English at school), and immediately seemed to fit this occasion. This text has already been set magnificently by Elgar, so partly to avoid any kind of comparison and also to bring its timeless message up to date, I asked my poet friend Jessica Duchen to give it a sligtly more contemporary feel.A poem about global music-making (which ties in with the NYCGB's recent World-Music CD), it speaks about humankind, nation to nation, and the mention of Babel inspiring a 'speakng of tongues' effect by using as many different international words for 'music' as possible as an accompaniment (not an easy task, as many of them are similar to our own word!). Easy to play, it still requires some technique of the instrument and some theory knowledge to read in different keys. The book includes the parts for Viola and Piano and for Viola only. The music, quite slow, is really delicate and is supposed to represent a Belgian girl coming from Brussels. She is part of the four faces with: I. The Californian girl, II. The Wisconsonian and IV. The Parisian girl. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. Hewas also part of Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz.
