Les sept années que passe le compositeur espagnol Falla à Paris, de 1907 à 1914, marquent un tournant dans sa production. La musique française moderne impressionniste qu'il entend alors fait une grosse impression sur lui et va désormais exercer une forte influence sur son oeuvre inspirée par le folklore espagnol. En 1909, il esquisse des morceaux pour piano seul qu'il intitule à l'origine 'Nocturnes'. Sur les conseils du pianiste Ricardo Viñes et du compositeur Isaac Albéniz, il transforme ensuite sa partition en une suite symphonique tripartite pour piano et orchestre. L'oeuvre est finalement achevée en 1915 et s'appelle désormais 'Nuits dans les jardins d'Espagne'. Although quite some time has passed since the multifaceted organ music from Spain's Golden Age could be called an 'insider's tip?, it had yet to attain popularity with any wide audience outside the countries of the Iberian Peninsula. The three-volume Urtext edition of selected works by Joan Cabanilles, the cathedral organist from Valencia, now has every chance of becoming a milestone in its own right.
