Alec Roth’s The Traveller is an oratorio for solo tenor, solo violin, SATB choir, children’s choir and an orchestra of strings, harp and percussion. In addition to writing six new poems for the piece, Vikram Seth has made English translations of twenty Indian texts from a rich variety of traditions and languages, including Sanskrit, Pali, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Tamil. Taking as its theme the Ages of Man, the work is divided into six main sections: Unborn – Child – Youth – Adult – Old – Dead, followed by a short epilogue. In this universal tale of Man’s journey through life, the role of The Traveller is taken by the solo violin, The Companions by the Choir and The Poet by the tenor soloist. The Traveller was commissioned jointly by the Salisbury, Chelsea and Lichfield Festivals with funds provided by the Arts Council of England and the PRS Foundation. It was first performed by Mark Padmore (tenor), Philippe Honoré (violin) and the Britten Sinfonia, conducted by the composer, with the Salisbury Festival Chorus and Salisbury Area Young Musicians Junior Choir, at Salisbury Cathedral on 31 May 2008. The volume contains well-known and lesser known original compositions from Bach to Schoenberg which are intended to diversify second- and third-year Piano lessons. In contrast to common play-along media the accompanying CD focuses on a representative selection of pieces from the compositions contained in this volume thus giving the pupil the opportunity to do his or her own imaginative exploring. He or she willgo on an exciting trip through the epochs which is presented by the pianist Markus Schirmer from Graz. This trip illustrates the varied forms and facets of the compositions contained in this volume from finding the adequate tempo to gaining an insight into an original manuscript by Bach. Internet links listed in an appendix referring to the compositions encourage the pupil to search for other traces. It was with deliberate intent that the music pieces were performed not solely by the professional pianist Markus Schirmer but also by his 12-year-old 'travelling companion' Philipp Scheucher. In the autumn of 1974 György Kurtág began to copy selected pieces from the series Games into a music notebook for Zoltán Kocsis who had been his student in earlier years and who, even today, is one of its most authentic performers. Kocsis played from this notebook in the first public performance of Games in 1974. The gradually expanding series of piano pieces also appeared in print in the course of later decades- however, since then he has used this collection - expanded over 32 years since by Kurtág - whenever he plays pieces from Games in concert. Since the time of this 1974 concert, as he writes: I didnt know that the spiral notebook I received at the premi?re would later become, as it were, my permanent companion. That I would take it with me from Japan to Canada, from Australia to Iceland, travelling to the worlds most prominent concert halls, surviving fire damage, flood, transport catastrophes, theft attempts, forced landings and so on, and that - well beyond the intention of its being copied with love - it would include works and sketches for which this notebook would become the principal source. The manuscript gives a glimpse into Kurtágs workshop from the viewpoint of both performers and musicologists. The former can understand more from Kurtágs handwriting about the composers intentions than from the printed score. The musicologists, however, can study the historical origins of the works: some works can be found here in more than one version, others appear in a version different from the printed score. The publication is accompanied by a booklet and a CD supplement. The booklet contains Kocsiss own personal preface, as well as András Wilheims essay providing information about the collection and the pieces contained therein. On the CD we hear 11 works performed by Kocsis, from a recording made in 1982 which has not previously been commercially issued. This edition has been published for György Kurtágs 90th birthday. Alfred Mistowski was a pianist Violinist violist and composer who as a former student of Trinity College of Music in London became after studying at Oxford a professor at Trinity who appears to have been a champion of theTrinity Examination system. Mistowski composed many dramatic cantatas String quartets symphonies and concertos as well as a series of pieces to prepare Violin students for their exams. He travelled the world as a Trinityexaminer covering India South Africa Tasmania New Zealand Singapore and the Straits Islands. In addition he was music tutor to the Maharaja of Mysore and conductor of the Mysore Palace Orchestra. Perhaps his many seajourneys inspired this sprightly Hornpipe for Violin and Piano a perennial of the Trinity exam list.
