Mysterious and threatening tones lead the way into an epic battle between the chaos of war and enlightenment of peace. Bellum et Pax is een compositie die twee oeroude begrippen verklankt: ‘oorlog’ en ‘vrede’. Qua structuur is het werk op te vatten als een eendelig muziekstuk met vier in elkaar overlopende onderdelen. Het geheel begint met mysterieus en dreigend slagwerk om via een kort recitatief van de sopraansaxofoon uit te monden in een klaagzang, vertolkt door de bugel. Al in de slotfase van dit eerste deel klinken dreigende, akkoordvreemde bastonen van waaruit het tweede deel zich ontwikkelt. Dit nieuwe gedeelte geeft de fenomenen ‘oorlog’, ‘lijden’, ‘dood’ en ‘waanzin’ weer. Na een chaotisch einde waarin alle waanzin op de spits gedreven wordt, klinkt opnieuw het klaagzangthema,wederom gespeeld op de bugel, maar nu waardig, nobel en in majeur. Dit vormt de overgang naar het derde deel, dat de vreugde om de (herwonnen) vrede beschrijft en leidt naar het vierde en laatste deel. Aan het eind klinken de mysterieuze bastonen en de dreigende sfeer van het begin opnieuw, als symbool van de aanwezigheid en constante dreiging van oorlog en geweld in de wereld. Dit werk werd in 2006 bekroond met de derde prijs in de compositiewedstrijd ‘De Muziekgolf’ te Antwerpen.

Fort Fincastle was built in 1793 by royal governor 'Lord Dunmore at an unusual location: Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.
The name of the fort: Fort Fincastle' comes from Dunmore's second title of Viscount Fincastle '( Earl of Fincastle).
He gave the fort a particular shape, a circular building with a sharp expansion in the form of a bow or bow of ship. In order to deceive enemy ships.

Werken op het fort betekent veel wachten en is best eenzaam,toch moet je altijd alert en waakzaam zijn voor de immer op de loer liggende aanval.
Na het afslaan van de zoveelste aanval heerst er een gevoel van tevredenheid en zien we het fort trots liggen op de heuvel die bovenNassau uit torent.

Peter Maxwell Davies' 1979 work for mezzo-soprano, baritone and orchestra, commissioned by the Philharmonia Orchestra, who gave the first performance in May 1992 at the Royal Festival Hall, with Simon Rattle conducting. The 'Black Pentecost' is the coming of uranium mining, which was a threat to Orkney when the work was written. The text tells of the destruction of old ways of life, the eclipse of the human by the technological. Davies sets it as a gripping dramatic cantata which is also a four-movement symphony, with the songs for imperious baritone and lyrical mezzo-soprano linked by orchestral transitions. This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures, wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla, the King of the Huns, and is characterised by fear, threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on Árpád, the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after István, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony, however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a â??thread,â? hardly recognizable at the beginning, becoming more and more obvious near the end and itconcludes the symphony as the â??final apotheosis,â? making the band sound like a majestic living organ.
