Among
Vivaldi's many flute and
recorder concertos, two,
both for transverse
flute, were known until a
few years ago only in
incomplete form: RV 431
and 432. Both are written
in the comfortable and
expressive key of E
minor, are transmitted in
autograph manuscripts and
lack their second
movement (RV 432 also
lacks its third
movement). The seemingly
enigmatic instruction
Grave sopra il libro
replacing the second
movement has given rise
to the most fanciful
hypotheses. The discovery
in Edinburgh, in 2010, of
a concerto for transverse
flute in D minor entitled
Il gran Mogol suddenly
shed light on the
situation: this was an
earlier version of RV
431, now complete with
its middle movement, a
Larghetto that is very
possibly identical with
the one missing in RV
431. This Gran Mogol,
which belonged to Robert
Kerr, a Scottish nobleman
and amateur flautist, was
already known by name to
scholars on account of
its listing in an
eighteenth-century
catalogue as part of a
set of Vivaldi concertos
bearing geographical
titles: more recently,
there has come to light a
letter written by Vivaldi
three months before his
death in which the
composer describes this
setin detail. It is very
likely that RV 431 and RV
432 belonged to this
group of works, the last
known collection of its
kind in Vivaldis oeuvre.
This critical edition
places these closely
related works side by
side for the first time,
placing them in their
historical context and
making them performable
through its
reconstruction of some
lost parts.

In 2011,
Barbara Garrop, my
mother, commissioned me
to write a piano trio in
memory of Norman Garrop,
my father, who passed
away about thirty years
ago. When I started
brainstorming about
topics for the piece, I
found it difficult to
recall many moments of my
early life involving my
father. Too many years
had passed, and the
memories that I could
summon were of achild
looking up to her father,
not an adult relating to
an equal. However, while
collecting stories of my
father from various
family members, along
with discovering a number
of objects that had once
belonged to him and that
I had stored away in
boxes decades ago, I
began to realize that
this piece wasn't so much
about my father as it was
about my re-discovering
the man that he was: a
loving husband and dad
who cared deeply about
his family and his
passions (which included
bike riding, collecting
coins, strumming our
guitar, playing baseball,
watching football games,
entertaining people,
helping to run local
theater and puppet
productions, and carving
objects out of wook); an
accountant who dreamed of
a better future: a
treasurer of our local
synagogue; an early
advocate for computers
(we owned an Apple II+);
and a pranster with a
great sense of humor.
Ultimately, I decided to
musically tell the story
of my search for these
memories. In the first
movement (Without), a
child calls out in a
sing-song voice,
searching for her lost
parent. This search
intesifies over the
course of the movement
through a series of
themes, including a
stepping motif in which a
two-note progression
steadily climbs higher, a
pseudo-jewish folksong,
and a passionate longing
theme. The child's search
becomes increasingly
intense throughout the
movement, calling out
fervently and repeatedly
to the parent; the
movement ends in a moment
of great tnesion and
uncertainty. The second
movment (Within) quietly
opens with the lost
parent finally answering,
represented by a solo
cello; the child (now
personified by the
violin) has found the
parent within the
sanctuary of her own
heart. This movement
highlights the joy and
solemnity of this
beautiful discovery.

Both a
spectacular concerto for
saxophone, and a dramatic
tone poem on Roman
mythology, QUICKSILVER is
a 23-minute concerto for
Alto Saxophone and Wind
Ensemble by one of the
sax literature’s most
commissioned and admired
composers.Through worded
captions as well as
gorgeously expressive
tone painting, Movement 1
depicts the birth and
childhood pranks of
Mercury, Movement 2 shows
him escorting souls to
the gates of the
Underworld, and Movement
3 is a phantasmagoric
finale portraying Mercury
as messenger amid the
conflicts of other
mythological figures.
There are many YouTube
performances available,
both in the original
version with Wind
Ensemble, and with
Piano. In addition to
being another name for
the element mercury,
“quicksilver” is used
to describe something
that changes quickly or
is difficult to contain.
My concerto of the same
name was inspired by the
Roman god Mercury, as
well as the mercurial
nature of the saxophone:
unpredictable, very
lively, and volatile.
Mercury (known as Hermes
in Greek mythology) is
best known for his winged
shoes, which allowed him
to fly swiftly as the
messenger of his fellow
Olympians. Mercury had
other duties too,
including serving as the
god of merchants,
travelers, and
tricksters; he also
ushered souls of the
departed to the
Underworld.Quicksilver
tells three tales of the
Roman god. The first
movement (Antics of a
Newborn God) opens with
the birth of Mercury;
after he takes his first
steps, he toddles around,
gleefully looking for
mischief. He stumbles
across a herd of cows
that belong to his
brother Apollo; Mercury
slyly lets the cows out
of their pen before
toddling onward with his
mischief-making.In the
second movement (Guiding
Souls to the Underworld),
Pluto, god of the
Underworld, bids Mercury
to bring him fresh souls.
The movement begins with
death-knells tolling for
humans who are about to
die; Mercury picks up
these souls and leads
them down to the gates of
the Underworld.The third
and final movement
(Messenger of Olympus)
depicts Mercury as he is
busily running errands
for various gods and
goddesses. We first
encounter him mid-flight
as he dashes to earth to
find Aeneas, a Trojan
lieutenant who had been
run out of Troy by the
invading Greeks. Aeneas
is on a quest to find
land on which to
establish a new city that
would eventually become
Rome. While traveling, he
is distracted from his
quest when he meets the
beautiful queen Dido.
They live together for
many years before Mercury
intervenes; he chastises
Aeneas for giving up on
his quest and persuades
him to pick it up again.
As Aeneas mournfully
resumes his journey, we
hear Dido perish of a
broken heart. Mercury
then takes to the skies
to seek out Perseus, who
is preparing to kill
Medusa, the hideous
gorgon who has snakes for
hair and a gaze that
turns those who catch her
glance into stone.
Mercury advises Perseus
on how to slay Medusa and
lends Perseus his sword
to do the deed. We hear
Perseus victorious in the
beheading of Medusa,
after which Mercury takes
to the skies once more to
fly home to Olympus.

NORA’S
DANCE is a
jazz-influenced rag from
1921, and among the only
surviving compositions by
Nora Douglas Holt. A
charming and exciting
work rejuvenated by Lara
Downes’ 2021 recording
for the Rising Sun label,
the rag is both a fun 2
minutes for pianists and
audiences, and also a
fascinating time capsule.
Composed several years
after Scott Joplin’s
death, and several years
before the Charleston
pervaded popular music,
NORA’S DANCE blossoms
with the energy and jazz
harmony starting to
emerge as The Roaring
20’s, using ragtime and
stride as the seed for
pianistic style. My
own life in music has
been driven by a quest to
find strong female role
models, trails to follow,
shoulders to stand on. In
Nora Douglas Holt, I find
an inspiring example of
creativity, independence,
and resilience – with a
dash of troublemaking.
She was a free spirit, a
force of nature, and she
lived a fascinating and
eventful life on her own
terms. She reinvented
herself through five
marriages and at least as
many careers. From her
beginnings at the piano
at age four, she explored
many avenues of musical
expression –
performing, composing,
music journalism,
broadcasting, teaching
– all with
inventiveness, style, and
zeal.She made the most of
the Roaring ’20s, as an
artist, socialite,
jetsetter, muse, and
patroness of the Harlem
Renaissance. In 1921 she
started an independent
arts journal called
“Music and Poetry,”
where the charming piano
solo Nora’s Dance was
first published. I think
the piece captures
beautifully, in a little
under 2 minutes, the
energy and excitement of
those heady years.In
1926, Nora left New York
to travel the world,
performing in nightclubs
throughout Europe and
Asia. She put her
belongings in storage
before she left, and when
she came back she
discovered that many of
her things had been
stolen, including more
than 200 of her musical
compositions. She never
composed again.When the
Depression hit, she moved
out to Los Angeles, where
she studied music
education at USC, taught
music in the LA public
schools, and opened her
own beauty salon. She
returned to New York in
the ’40s and worked as
a music critic for
several major newspapers,
then launched yet another
career, this time in
broadcasting. Her popular
radio concert series
“Nora Holt’s Concert
Showcase” broadcast to
New York’s classical
music audience, with a
focus on Black composers
and performers.Ahead of
her time, larger than
life, full of ideas…. I
am so pleased to
introduce you to the
feisty and free spirited
Nora Douglas Holt!
