Kammeroper Nr. 2. Par RIHM WOLFGANG. Chamber opera does not mean “little opera.” On the same scale as chamber music is to the symphony, it is rather the other way of talking onstage. The movable apparatus permits sophisticated voice-leading. A large ensemble demands simple conception to achieve the complexity it perhaps intends; this can be formulated more sharply and nuanced in a chamber ensemble. Therefore it is the subject which this type of presentation must sustain – or, better, provoke.
Büchner’s Lenz
is a description of the conditions within a process of collapse, moments of destruction already occurred but not yet accepted, evident in the points of contact with the environment. And it was those points of contact which Michael Fröhling attempted to reconstruct onstage. Lenz’s distraught state is always the same; only the proximity of the environment to that distraught state grows and ebbs.
The musical consequence
An hour of extreme chamber music results from this description: always bound for the main character – actually, not a commentary, but the main character himself as a multilayered level of action. Although Lenz acts on many levels – or tries to or believes he is – he has no room to manoeuvre. That is why he is also tightly interwoven in his sonic surroundings; the voices which only he hears are just as much himself as the two men with whom he foregathers (the liberal pragmatist Oberlin and the alert merchant who always “does the right thing” in every situation) – they evoke responses which he deeply desires. Omnipresent Friederike is just as much his inner world as Nature is – Nature, which he can no longer perceive unless it is personified, enlivened or dead.
Therefore, the music’s task is both to motivate the “situation” (atmospherically) and to be the psychological constant (via a network of entangled references per se) in an action as it is played out.
The compositional process
December 1977 to June 1978 – a period identical to the stepwise understanding of an existence as that of Jakob Lenz. Yet the more the historical figure became precisely attendant in my intellect in terms of data and atmosphere, the more it retreated in favour of a cipher of disturbance as I began to understand Lenz.
Thence the explanation for the failure of the attempts to approach him – including my attempt to interpret him via musical representation – because, essentially, Lenz himself is the failure. Only the naked stages of that failure remain portrayable, i.e. including the failure of those who wish to “help” Lenz, for example, while Lenz himself is already trapped inextricably in a state of complete destruction. I tried to compose my way into that situation as far as possible; the insistence of several rhythmic and harmonic configurations is the palpable expression of the main character’s ever-recurring rigidity. One sound pervades the entire work.
The musical stage
For me, this is a place where very magical and very human things take place. In Jakob Lenz, the human aspects often switch to magical ones, since the realism of a self-suasive, unhinged soul takes on surreal traits – or we simply cannot understand that otherwise except as not being real. A character like Jakob Lenz on the stage is complex due to the fact alone that it harbours many stages within itself, and music must represent those constantly present stages.
I have tried to do so in the most direct way – by not cleanly separating the musical layers, but keeping them constantly in evidence until they must break forth, each in accord with its own dramaturgy. In an overview, the large form takes on aspects of a rondo, performed in overlapping layers – a type of rondo relief, since perspectives of psychological proximity and distance are indeed formulated musically as atmospheric relations.
Above all: the thread on which Jakob Lenz hangs is the current onto the listeners’ hearts.

Par COLERIDGE-TAYLOR SAMUEL. The period of composition (ca. 1893) for the Suite de Pièces for violin and piano or violin and organ was especially productive for Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) in the realm of chamber music. Unpublished works include a piano quintet, clarinet sonata, nonet, piano trio, and a piano sonata. It is notable that the different versions of the Suite for piano and organ are so contrasting. Typically, pieces in this genre that exist in versions for piano and organ have little that separate them in terms of musical content. However, Coleridge-Taylor not only approaches each keyboard instrument quite differently but conceived the violin part with notable melodic differences. This can be considered exceptional as they were both issued by the same publisher within a close timeframe. Coleridge-Taylor would have been very familiar with the organ from his early church experience as a boy in addition to studies at the Royal College of Music with Walter Alcock. His writing is consistently idiomatic for the instrument. The few registrational directions in the first edition, assuming they are by Coleridge-Taylor, demonstrate an understanding of the need to balance the organ part with the violin part so that the organ is not too loud. Rather than numbering the manuals I and II, with II being the quieter manual, the score indicates Swell and Choir but there is no requirement for the Great to be used. There are also extended sections where no manual indication is given at all. Whether the registration markings were made by Coleridge-Taylor or an editor at Schott is unclear but the indication for a Choir manual suggests not so much the need for an organ of three manuals but an instrument with a range of foundational colours for writing that is often accompanimental in nature. / Date parution : 2023-06-01/ Répertoire / Violon et Orgue

Unlike many Mel Bay books, the Complete Balalaika Book does not begin with the rudiments of music notation. Rather, the 20-page Foreword offer insights on the tunings of all the instruments in the balalaika family, hand positions, string sources and height adjustment, and chord shapes. The author even describes how to make a bass balalaika pick from shoe leather. The Tutor or instruction segment is written for the 'prima balalaika' which is correctly played with the fingers only rather than with a pick. The Tutor jumps right in with exercises and tunes in quarter, eighth, and sixteenth-note values with occasional dotted notes and syncopation. Perhaps half of the music in this section is shown in both standard notation and tablature. A glossary of musical signs and Russian musical terns is included. A Brief History of the Balalaika is well written and nicely illustrated. Very few Mel Bay books contain such a comprehensive historical overview of the subject instrument. The Repertoire Section offers a valuable resource of Eastern European folk tunes. All but two selections in this section are written in both notation and tab with suggested guitar chords, the exceptions being an arrangement for balalaika and piano, and a balalaika orchestra score. It was in 1990 - more than 250 years after the publication of 'Il Pastor Fido' - that the masterful forgery was exposed: not Antonio Vivaldi but in fact the French composer Nicolas Chédeville (1705-1782) turned out to be the true author of this sonata collection, which was subtly foisted upon the unsuspecting Parisian public in the middle of the 18th Century, at the height of Vivaldi's popularity in France. Vivaldi himself never came to know anything of the misuse of his name and musical intellectual property.'Il Pastor Fido' offers a 'Mélange' of very simple, movements and gallantries in the French style, as well as some throughout original movements of exceptionally fine music and powerful compositional ideas. Approximately ninety percent of 'Il Pastor Fido? is Chédeville's own work - for the remainder, he adopted and built upon themes (or those which he thought to be) by Vivaldi, all the while demonstrating a thorough understanding of the style that he was striving to imitate.As with all of Chédeville's other works and numerous other collections from the time, the original title mentions a series of instruments, all of which are suitable for performing these sonatas: the musette, hurdy-gurdy, flute, oboe and violin. Historical information about Händel's Water Music Suites is limited, but certainly these works were intended for two, possibly three, parties given by King George I on the Thames River, London, between 1715 and 1736. Händel and his orchestra played on a barge. Since then the some twenty-two separate original pieces have been organized into three Suites and nicknamed 'Water Music?, each having a separate key and likely corresponding to these river parties. This transcription of Water Music Suite II for saxophone quartet has two purposes: to make this music available to saxophonists for performance and education, and to provide in one volume the entire Suite II. The exception to the latter, because of the limits of endurance, is the exclusion of the short Adagio, a brief interlude between the fi rst two movements. Included though are the Allegro, Hornpipe, Minuet, Lentement, and Bourree. These works were originally meant for an outdoor performance, and one of the original intentions of the saxophone was to play in French military bands, also an open-air purpose. The original scoring of brass, woodwind, and string instruments (but no continuo) transcribe well for saxophones. Matching the ranges of instruments of the original to the saxophone quartet was a primary objective. In addition, this arrangement strives to disperse melodic material to all four saxophones so as to make the arrangement pleasing to all the members of the quartet while providing variety to an audience. Any dynamic, articulation, and tempo markings are to be taken only as suggestions so as to allow interpretation by the performers. The musical study and performance of all styles while using examples of composition and performance that represent excellence is necessary for saxophonists who wish to be well-rounded musicians. For the above reasons saxophonists are urged to listen to recordings of the original orchestration in order to learn and imitate proper interpretation of Baroque style. There are currently a number of excellent recordings of Handel's Suites on period instruments, such as (but not limited to) those by conductors John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, and the ensemble Tafelmusik. The Lewis-Clark State College Saxophone Quartet has for many years enjoyed performing Suite II for concerts, ceremonies and social settings, and I thank Advance Music for the opportunity to bring these great works to the profession. / 4 Saxophones (SATBar)

With only one exception, Gade composed his works for male choir with accompaniment for Danish choral societies, numerous of which had been founded across the country since 1839. These societies were often closely connected with professional associations, making them equally important for musical and social matters.
This volume contains five occasional works for male choir with accompaniment that were composed between around 1838 and 1883. Three of them were intended for church usage (two funerals and one wedding).
Among the works for equal voices and accompaniment in this volume, 'Aarstidsbilleder” op. 51 is the longest. It was composed for the women of The Music Society in Copenhagen and conducted by Gade himself during the 1871/72 seasons.

Psalm 117. Par GILL JOANNA. In this setting of Psalm 117 the composer has created an unusually serene and ethereal setting considering the meaning of the text. Most composers that have written settings of this Psalm 'Praise the Lord, all you Nations' have written music of a robust nature and celebration. However, this setting not only uses Hebrew text but the whole composition with the exception of one bar is dynamically quiet and reflects not so much on praising the Lord, but the love that the Lord shares with us, hence the title of the work (“Unfailing love”).
Written for unaccompanied mixed choir, this is a simple four-part composition. The choral texture is largely homophonic with melodic lines gently emerging in the soprano and tenor voices which then sink back into the blanket of choral sound. Generally, the work is tonal but it features harmonic clusters which delays the expectation of the final resolution. This is a work that with rehearsal all choirs will find very rewarding to sing and perform.

“Unfailing Love” was the first choral piece I ever wrote. In my final year of university, I had the privilege of meeting the American composer, Morten Lauridsen and immediately was inspired to write a choral piece.
