My father, Y. “Raghu” Raghunathan, came from India to the U.S. in 1963, followed soon after by my mother Sita. Dad enjoyed a substantial career as a pharmaceutical chemist, but he drew satisfaction from a simple life among family and friends, never allowing professional demands to overshadow his devotion to loved ones. Modest, compassionate, and ardently egalitarian, he was careful not to take anything too seriously, especially himself. He embraced his own ordinariness because it connected him to everyone else; it made him no better or worse than his neighbor, no more or less deserving of friendship or kindness than any of his fellow human beings. He showed us how to live with dignity, compassion, grace, and boundless love. His last piece of advice to me: “Go slow.” Several weeks after his passing, I happened upon a recording of Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues, opus 87. I couldn’t understand why at the time, but the sixteenth prelude and fugue took hold of me and would not let go. I completely immersed myself in that piece for ten days, until it became a mystical conduit for something else: in this semi-trance state I produced a prelude and fugue of my own, in prayer (orison) and in praise (upastuti). It shadows Shostakovich’s form, but it somehow expresses my father’s unhurried, loving spirit. I’ve come to believe that he sent me this piece as a blessing. I composed this setting in my last weeks of study at Westminster Choir College. The Latin text (Sine paenitentia enim sunt dona et vocatio Dei) translates roughly to “Truly, without regret are the gifts and callings of God.” This piece serves not only as an outward affirmation for all to embrace and use their God-given talents, but also as an inward mantra for myself, as I move into an uncertain period in my life after completing my undergraduate studies. Many of the colors and textures found within this piece were influenced by my experience singing with the Westminster Williamson Voices for two years. While the “sine paenitentia” text may allow shades of doubt to creep in, all uncertainty and fear is dispelled upon singing “sunt dona et vocatio Dei.” —Cortlandt Matthews Here is an amazing performance by The Westminster Williamson Voices at the Choral Insititute at Oxford. Never before have I felt the urgency within myself to communicate with my instrument something which goes beyond just the notes, a desire to embrace with music parts of the world which I see as being so neglected and abandoned, as if man were no longer able to see beyond the narrow confines of his home and work spaces. The environment which surrounds us, free and pure, seems to bow more and more to the base instincts of abuse which man brings into play... the destruction of centuries-old forests and glaciers, the construction of harmful and disturbing, useless and polluting elements... and I wonder what we can do, what I, as a musician, can do, at least to show my disapproval of these situations. I have no straight answer but I know that writing the music I love to play, often born in natural and wild environments can help to dream of, or imagine a present time which is more on a human scale, thanks to the strong evocative power which music possesses and emanates.
This is the meaning of these compositions, dedicated to a tree, a 700-year-old specimen of the Stura Valley, Lu Merze Gros (The Big Larch), to the small beings which inhabit it, in the bark, among its foliage, in the surrounding soil and to my sense of frustration at seeing a forest of fir trees razed to the ground to allow the construction of a bobsleigh run.
This action of mine has been useless and nostalgic perhaps, but it has given me intense moments of emotion in the writing and moves me enormously during its performance.

Having studied under Jean Pierre Rampal and Tony Aubin at the Conservatoire National de Paris, flautist Guy-Claude Luypaerts now divides his time between his work as a soloist, teacher and orchestral conductor, without neglecting his compositional activity. Luypaerts has remained true to his childhood land: for this resident of the seaside village of Panne in western Flanders, the North Sea coastline is a continual source of inspiration. This beloved landscape, where sea, sky and dune embrace, was the setting for the composition of the Partita for Flute in August 2014. The title can be seen as a tribute to two essential works in the solo Flute repertoire: Bach?s Partita in A Minor, BWV 1013 and the Sonata in A Minor Wq 179 by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel.
