Niels Viggo Bentzon was a prodigiously productive composer and a cultural giant of 20th century Denmark. While best known for his Tempered Clavier works he wrote widely for Orchestra and chamber ensembles and at different times of his career embraced neoclassic atonal and twelve-tone palettes. In the Trumpet Sonata as in some of his other sonatas he explores the duality of the two instruments. In this case he enters more deeply into atonal harmonies without ever quite leaving diatonism entirely behind. The Trumpet Sonata is in classic three-movement form.

Alun Hoddinott was born in Glamorganshire in 1929. His compositional talents developed early and he won a university scholarship at the age of sixteen. In 1951 he was appointed Lecturer in Music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama; he later became lecturer at University College Cardiff and was made Professor and Head of Department there in 1967. Hoddinott achieved a mastery of composition which embraced almost every musical medium. His strong creative urge stimulated by a tremendous variety of eminent performers is reflected in a substantial body of works. Essentially chromatic his music often shows a dark Celtic intensity manifested in his nocturnal slowmovements. As former Professor of Music at University College Cardiff and Artistic Director of the Cardiff Festival he had considerable influence in awakening interest in contemporary music in South Wales. Alun Hoddinott died in Wales in March 2008 at the age of 78.

Some churches are characterised by hymns which have stood the test of time others by songs that were written yesterday.Neither is necessarily right or wrong but we are in danger of thinking that certain songs are exclusive to our particular tradition. But what of the many churches that seek to progress from the old but at the same time are unsureof how to explore the new? They find themselves in a gap between the two often pursuing a style of worship that misses out on the richness of either. Letter from Sado is an exciting new piece for young band based on a Japanese haiku of the same name. Sado refers to Sado Island in Japan in which various artists religious and military leaders were sent in exile many years ago. The island hashistorically had a strong community of taiko drummers and as such the piece incorporates optional homemade taiko drums. Blackshaw writes: ?To capture the idea of interpretation and the concept of reading between the lines the students are invitedto become decision makers about particular sections in the music. For example the opening and closing sections of the piece use the same material which is a selection of repeated melodic figures. The students themselves decide how to play thesefigures as individuals in small teams and then as a whole band. Their decisions include ideas regarding tempo (how fast?) dynamics (how loud?) and articulation (smooth short or hard?). To inspire them we use the haiku poem; i.e. the openingsection invites the students to play the material as if it were a stormy wild sea and the closing section invites the students to play the same melodic figures but this time draw their inspiration from Heavens River or as we know it the MilkyWay. In-between there is an elaborate heavily textured section that becomes increasingly powerful. The music doesnt rest harmonically until the whole band plays in unison. These multiple layers of sound represent the many thoughts and ideas thatwould have surrounded those individuals sent to Sado Island in exile the final unison is representative of their own breakthrough experience sending them on a pathway to inner peace and acceptance.? His compositions embrace choral orchestral and instrumental music and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College and in 1981 he formed his own choir the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time betweencomposition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.

Voiced for both SSAA and SATB Kevin Memley displays again his command for expressing poetry in song. The musical lines take us into Christina Rossetti's poem into her dream and speaks for all of us at the same time. Rebecca Clarke's Come oh come my life's delight for SATB.for unaccompanied SATB to words by Thomas Campion.This is a lilting take on the Elizabethan lute-song full of smooth Stanford-like nineteenth-century harmonies exquisitely tempered with modal effects.Rebecca Clarke was born in Harrow in 1886 and died in New York City in 1979. She was one of the finest Viola players of her day and a skilful composer who studied with Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London. Her output as a composer was small comprising about 90 works but all these pieces are brilliant and powerful. Her Piano Trio and Viola Sonata are often playedand recorded and are now widely regarded as masterpieces. However her songs are perhaps her finest body of works and embrace a variety of styles from Blakean simplicity to brutal tragedy and outright farce. Rebecca Clarke's choral music was virtually unknown until Oxford University Press began to publish these works for the first time. She wrote for chorus and other vocal ensembles throughout virtually her whole career from her earliest attempts at composition around 1906 to her final flowering in the 1940s revising and recomposing until as late as 1976.

Having studied under Jean Pierre Rampal and Tony Aubin at the Conservatoire National de Paris, flautist Guy-Claude Luypaerts now divides his time between his work as a soloist, teacher and orchestral conductor, without neglecting his com­positional activity. Luypaerts has remained true to his childhood land: for this resident of the seaside village of Panne in western Flanders, the North Sea coastline is a continual source of inspiration. This beloved landscape, where sea, sky and dune embrace, was the setting for the composition of the Partita for Flute in August 2014. The title can be seen as a tribute to two essential works in the solo Flute repertoire: Bach's Partita in A Minor, BWV 1013 and the Sonata in A Minor Wq 179 by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Dedicated to flautist Maxence Larrieu, who included it in the programme of his International Competition (2015), the Partita contains three movements. The energetic determination of Patience contrasts with the dreamy exhalations of Volutes, before the Chimères are unleashed upon an angry sea. / Flûte Traversière
