Motette. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Motet of an unknown arranger [ca. 1820], based on th Adagio of the Serenade KV 361 [Gran Partita]. The motet Quis te comprehendat, K-Anhang 110, is based on the Adagio in Mozart’s Wind Serenade K. 361, the “Gran Partita. ” The arrangement of this instrumental movement with the addition of a four-part choir deserves to be regarded as a successful example of the practice of parody, on a higher level than many less accomplished arrangements of the period. As in most of those cases the identity of the arranger is unknown, but his sensitive treatment of the original points to a gifted musician. Characteristic accompanying figures are given to the strings, while the solo violin andthe organ appear melodically. The homophonic choral setting, whose Latin words are a religious song of praise with no specific liturgical connection, is based on the works harmonic substance. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN / GREBER JAKOB / VIVALDI ANT. In the opera and cantata orchestra of the baroque the sound and gentle timbre of the recorder had a special significance. It served pre-eminently to represent the emotional states of love, pain and sorrow. Many arias with obbligato recorder which have survived are still unknown today, despite the diligent efforts of “early music” enthusiasts to uncover these treasures. Through the “Flauto e voce” series this repertoire, for both study and concert use, is experiencing an interesting expansion and enrichment. The present new issue offers three arias from Bach Cantatas BWV 103 and 182 [the latter in two versions], 2 arias from Vivaldi’s operas as well as a graceful Italiancantata from the historically, practically unknown composer Jakob Greber [ca. 1710]. In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War, commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel's most thrilling compositions and, for Wittgenstein, the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor, Douglas Woodfull-Harris, was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work's evolution from Ravel's autograph working copy to the first printededition. The piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel's and Wittgenstein's fingerings. Also included is a solo part without fingering, thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction, and enabled the editor, amongst other things, to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions, including the solo Piano part. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN / GOUNOD CHARLES. The French Bach cult, which began in the early 19th century, reached an initial highpoint around 1850. Charles Gounod, still largely unknown at the time, also studied Bach?s works intensively ? his chorales, motets, and the preludes and fugues of the 48. He is said to have improvised his expressive, cantabile melody over the famous broken chords of Bach?s C-major Prelude BWV 846 from the 48 at a private performance in 1852. This arrangement would later became world famous when underlaid with the text of the Ave Maria.
