The concerto takes the historical figure of the brutal impaler Vlad Tzepesch (1431-1476) as its starting point and subsequently develops the myth into an overwrought and gruesome piece of work: 1: 'Oderint dum metuant' is a raving Allegro with a Baroque ritornello structure and modern 'Draculisms'. 2: 'Luna su Tirgoviste' is a memoriam for the thousands of impaled victims who came to a violent end in today's Targoviste. 3: 'Il ballo transilvano' confronts a naive waltz rhythm with aggressive polyrhythmic reinterpretations - in the manner of the stick and the carrot. 4: 'Bacio di sangue' is Neo-Baroque horror music which has got out of hand, demanding extreme virtuosity from both soloists and ensemble. These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.

The SECOND SUITE has five movements and is intended for a quartet of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on the fifth part on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.

It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.

Having written four String Quartets in less than a decade, Leshnoff struck a lighter note with his fifth, titled Four Dances. The four dance movements are I Waltz, II Pavane, III Chas Tanz, IV Furlana. Written in 2014, Four Dances was premiered by Carpe Diem String Quartet the following year, and has just been recorded by the same on an album featuring Leshnoff's 3rd and 4th String Quartets, as well. Four Dances is also arranged for saxophone quartet (494-03141) and Baltimore Chamber Orchestra recently premiered a chamber orchestra arrangement, available on a rental basis. An arrangement for full orchestra is also available on rental.
