Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Excelsus for solo Cello. 'Excelsus takes the form of a suite each movement being based on a passage from the Requiem mass text. Although I spent many hours refining my interpretation of the words the work is ultimately a more instinctive reaction to the evocative language of the excerpts. However my stance was always totally atheistic and this infiltrates everything from the mood through the disregard for the text’s order to the instrumentation (the use of a lone figure which I viewed as a musical equivalent to the ‘first person’ offending against the liturgical norms which areconcerned with people as a community). Musically the entire work is based on two themes one melodic (the Rex Tremendae or ‘King of Awful Majesty’ theme which is heard at the very opening) and one chordal (the Lux Aeternum (Light eternal) chords not revealed in their pure form until the pizzicato passage that concludes the suite). The order ofthe movements is as follows: Requiem Aeternum (Grant them eternal rest)Kyrie (Lord have mercy)Tuba Mirum (Hark the Trumpet)Sanctus (Holy holy)Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)Quid Sum Miser (What shall I a wretch say then?)' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad

Hugh Wood's Ballade Op.57 for Piano was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by Joanna MacGregor on 7th June 2012 at the Guildhall Bath as part of the Bath International Music Festival.'The music of Chopinis a revelation which came disgracefully late in my life. To admire is one thing; to try to emulate is quite another: and all that I have borrowed here is a title. Perhaps memories of Joanna MacGregor performing the FourthBallade very beautifully long ago played a part in the naming. But to define what a Ballade should or should not be is quite beyond me: after all Chopin and Brahms both came to quite different conclusions. I just like theold rather poetic word.A fanfarish beginning ends in a falling arpeggionic cascade which will recur in varied form at turning points throughout the piece. A major third emerges to become the accompaniment to the mainlyrical melody which becomes more and more decorated until it ends with a second cascade. The tune resumes more urgently against an undulating semiquaver accompaniment. A bigger climax suddenly gives way to a reminiscence of oneof the opening figures and then introduces alla recit. a new motif. But immediately the main melody continues this time getting gradually calmer quieter and sweeter until the new motif takes over in a passage of 6 and ismore fully worked out. From very high up the opening fanfares are heard in the distance and a faster tempo brings a more vigorous passage culminating in the biggest and most climactic of the cascades. This might be theend of the piece but it is not. A sequence of soft velvety chords rises up eventually to reveal the original major third. Four phrases of the opening melody are then heard over it in their plainest form.' - H.W.

Michael Nyman is a composer pianist librettist writer musicologist photographer and film-maker whose work encompasses opera concert music and film soundtracks of which The Draughtsman's Contract and The Piano arethe best-known. Since founding the Michael Nyman Band in 1977 which tours the world he has worked with leading film directors and has collaborated with artists such as Mary Kelly Damon Albarn Carsten Nicolai and the recentOscar winning Man on Wire star Phillippe Petit.Songs For Tony for String Quartet was composed in 1993 in memory of Tony Simmons.'I began writing a saxophone quartet on New Year's Eve 1992. Inthe early afternoon of 5th January 1993 I was informed that my friend and business manager Tony Simmons had died after a long and heroic fight against cancer. I immediately sat down and wrote the music which became the fourthsong in what became a 'memorial' quartet. The previously composed music was scrapped as I decided to give each player in turn an 'aria' of his own.The first song is a transcription of an actual song - 'Mozart onMortality' - which I wrote for the Composers Ensemble in the spring of 1992. The text by Mozart himself is all too appropriate: 'I may not see another day'. The second song is adapted from the music for the scene in JaneCampion's film The Piano where the mute Ada (Holly Hunter) pushes her chief means of communication her piano overboard. This film was the last major deal that Tony negotiated on my behalf. The third song a soprano sax solo isbased on a tune I composed some years ago but was saving for a special occasion.' - Michael Nyman

Composer Alex Shapiro's piece Paper Cut is reminiscent of a movie soundtrack to which the musicians can imagine their own dramatic scene. Paper Cut is written to make the players themselves part of the action withchoreographed maneuvers that look as compelling as they sound. In fact the band members don't even play their instruments until halfway into the piece – instead they “play” paper along with a prerecorded track! The unusual element of paper and the myriad sounds that can emerge from something so simple offers a fresh view of what music-making can be and opens everyone's ears to the sonic possibilities found among everyday objects.Although Paper Cut was composed with middle schoolers in mind it's also suited to more advanced musicians since the paper techniques and the skill of playing against a prerecorded track are interesting for all ages.
