24 Pieces For Piano. Par WOLF PETER E.. Péter Wolf (a doctoral graduate of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest) has composed a number of large-scale compositions in recent years which have had success at the hands of distinguished performers: these include two piano concertos as well as concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin. By entitling his newest set of pieces for piano Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, the composer was able to simultaneously indulge in wordplay based upon his surname and give a tip of the hat to German baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach. The work's likeness to Bach is not limited to its title - the manner in which a piece has been written in both major and minor keys for each tone of the chromatic scale is blatantly inspired by Bach. In the preface to this publication, Wolf offers the following insights: ''I think I managed to find expressive titles. The first piece, Epiclesis (a prayer for inspiration, patience, and support), was heard from above: I was able to work continuously and without inhibitions. The works could be born in every key, until the last one, the Epilogue, was completed. When I finally finished inscribing the pitches of Bach's name, I admit, a little shiver went through me.'' Of the character pieces, all were completely new with the exceptions of one being previously written and another whose theme Wolf borrowed from one of his own stage works. Wolf-temperiertes Klavier is recommended for advanced pianists who wish to push the boundaries between musical genres, as well as classical musicians interested in the harmonic language of jazz. / Niveau : Intermédiaire à Avancé / Musique contemporaine / Répertoire / Piano

Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers...(+)
Par BACEWICZ GRAZYNA. Studying the sketches for works which a composer considers to be finished, perfected, is a fascinating activity. It enables one to penetrate the secrets of creative work, to compare the initial outline of a composition with its final version. A sketch is generally left untitled, but it does occur that a composer enhances the status of such a draft by giving it a title, before creating an improved version of that title on the basis of the finished work. The list of compositions by Grazyna Bacewicz, the full catalogue of which is held in the National Library in Warsaw, includes a work for string quartet entitled Quatuor. The manuscript was left undated, but analysis of the music allows us to date this work to the mid-1960s. In the composer?s output from that period, the instrumental tone colouring, often an element that helps to forge a work, takes on particular significance.
The first movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] opens with three fifth-tritone chords ?cast forth?, in succession, in saltando-gettato technique by the cello, second violin and first violin. When we look at the beginning of the Seventh String Quartet, from 1965, such a chord appears in the second bar of the cello part. Further comparisons lead to interesting conclusions. The two opening movements are almost identical, built from the same elements, only spatially arranged in a different way. In the structure of the first movement of the Seventh Quartet, one distinguishes two thematic planes, which shape the narrative after the fashion of a sonata allegro. The first theme is a series of episodes of changing texture ? from passagework to chords and short glissandos repeated with varying intensity. The second theme (Meno mosso) displays an imitative form. Both works feature an inverted reprise. For the first 25 bars of the second movement, a nostalgic Grave, the two works sound identical. The continuation of this movement in the Quatuor [à cordes] is more modest than in the analogous segments of the Seventh Quartet, in terms of both changing textures and the use of differentiated means of articulation. Towards the end, a motif from the beginning of this movement returns in modified form. Both the third movements (Capriccioso in the Quatuor [à cordes], Con vivezza in the Seventh Quartet) take the form of a rondo, and appearing in each of them is the same ?warbling? theme, based on scattered notes with grace notes. The Seventh String Quartet is in three movements. The presumed prototype consists of four movements. The last movement of the Quatuor [à cordes] is a Maestoso resembling a mine of textural ideas for other works of a sonoristic provenance from this period. The introduction, constituting a closed narrative whole and a reference point for the rest of the movement, is followed by segments that are dominated by ostinatos of various kinds, including with the use of harmonics, passages built on the progressive shifting of short motifs, and unevenly spread chords.
Grazyna Bacewicz used material from earlier works more than once in her compositions. Her oeuvre also includes ?twin? pieces merely scored for a different set of instruments. Yet the self-quotation that occurs in the case of the Quatuor [à cordes] and the Seventh String Quartet ? lengthy passages from another of her works reused with minor modifications ? is an unusual situation. It undermines the former?s status as an independent work.

Chaconne. Par LERDAHL FRED. Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach’s D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern.
My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

A range of fabulous educational and concert guitar music by the UK's top guitar composers educators and performers.Rush originally started out as a study for the right hand thumb. The piece opens in five with a darting weaving bass melody and harmonic language similar to the Cuban feel of Leo Brouwer's first study. As the piece progresses I played around with some poly-rhythms and syncopations in 3/4 time with a Venezuelan flavour similar to the music of Antonio Lauro. The title Metropolis was created like many of my pieces retrospectively. It was suggested to me by Mark Eden and resonated with much of what I felt the piece conveyed essentially the non-stop hustle and bustle of a musical 'city' where influences combine from many different ages and musical cultures. The initial ideas for the piece came from trying to formulate a study for the left hand where the 4th finger jumps from the first string to the lower bass strings. As is often the case on finishing the piece I now hear many things which although not used consciously have emerged in the music to remind me of music I have listened to or studied in the past.At various points a musical quote taken from the end of the first movement of La Catedral by the Paraguayan guitarist and composer Agustin Barrios Mangore appears which I have syncopated and used as a musical junction with the music taking a different direction each time it appears.Towards the end of the piece the performer combines left hand hammered chords with right hand finger clicks and tamboura creating a visual juggling effect when performed. Something resembling the sound of a siren can then be discerned before the piece moves into the closing E major section. I did most of the work for the final version of this piece in the autumn of 2005 just after the birth of my second daughter!I think the music reflects something of the pace of my life around then!Birds Flew Over The Spire is a short lyrical piece which was also

Mass in Time of War. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Haydn was in England, in 1795, when he received word from his new Prince, Nicolaus II Esterházy, that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed, and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister, except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose, every year, a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria, which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church, and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion, and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt. Three arrangements including Ave Verum Corpus and the Lacrimosa from the Requiem.During the year 1771 when Mozart was 15 years old he and his father Leopold were touring Italy which was at that time the most formidable citadel of the music world. In the following four years the young Mozart was received at the homes and villas of Italy's aristocracy. He met the most famous musicians of the time including Niccolo Piccinni operatic rival to Gluck and Padre Martini from whom he was to benefit from studies in counterpoint. He also met many noted male soprano singers and for one the celebrated Venanzio Rauzzini he wrote in 1773 the motet Exsultate Jubilate from whichcomes the well known Alleluia. At the end of his life only 19 years later in Vienna 1791 Mozart was very ill and working on a number of massive works such as the operas The Magic Flute and Titus also the Requiem. Titus was completed in 18 nerve-shattering days as it had to be performed in Prague in September 1791. At its premiere it was a complete flop. This affected the now overworked almost penniless composer's spirit and he returned to Vienna suffering from mental and physical exhaustion. Rest was denied him. The Magic Flute had to be finished for its premier on September 30th 1791. The task of the Requiem still faced him. In this weakened state Mozart thought that he was in fact writing his own requiem reading evil omens into the commissioning of the work. He thought someone had calculated the precise time of his death and was thus troubled with sombre thoughts. He completed the first two of the twelve parts. The next six parts were in an unfinished state and his manuscript ceased at the Lacrimosa. Süssmayer who was working closely with Mozart at the time was given the task of finishing the Requiem.Ave Verum Corpus is also one of his final works. It is a setting of an anonymous hymn written as a motet for Anton Stoll the choirmaster at Baden in June 1791.Mozart was a composer of great genius who

Major Yvon Ducene wanted a new lush and colourful composition for his Guides military band with André Waignein as its composer. Early in 1979 the composer began his assignement and in October of the same year the finished full score was on the music stands of this prestigious military band of the Belgian Army. The introduction (Grave) mirrors an atmosphere full of serenity in which the theme played by the oboes and the English horn is predominant and immediately holds the listener spell-bound. It is taken up again as central element of the slow movement. The Allegro breaks away from the quiet passion of the introduction. Here the band can really show its capabilities to thefull. Based on a very precise rythm an idiom of sudden desperation and adversity develops which fused with a crushing agression culminates in a kind of eruption soom calmed down by a Lento : peace and quiet has returned thanks to a melody by the horns and soon taken over by the clarinets. In the meantime the saxophone - an instrument full of human emotion - express the main spatial dimension in contemporary psyche. Following a harmonic transition the brass-players take up the theme again in forte whilst the basses and the woodwinds interwine in technical arabesques. The movings of the mind and the heart get an audible and almost touchable shape in the ensuing Allegro a movement characterized by a rhythmic dialogue in which the whole orchestra participates and where the exposition contains a wealth of sound and technical contrasts. The Lento finally uses the central theme of the slow movement again with some occasional references to the two allegros. The last page is of unprecedented grandeur. All the instruments display their most beautiful sound which were named by Jacques Ferschotte when speaking about Honneger 'harmonies d'intensités' harmonies of the unmeasurable.

Par MITCHELL HAROLD. Mitchell on Trumpet is revered by educators around the globe and stands unequalled by any other published approach for trumpet. This proven curriculum will guide any ambitious student on a path towards performance excellence. It takes you from the beginning to the extreme limits of the horn through a gradual progression of 82 balanced lessons developing your range from low F-sharp to G above high C. Mitchell on Trumpet - Book 2 continues this exciting journey with Lesson 27 and introduces many advanced concepts while extending the student's range to High C. The exercises and studies cover all phases of playing with the ultimate goal of acquiring and maintaining a strong flexible embouchure. Los Angeles studio pro, Chris Tedesco, will guide you through selected excerpts from all 19 lessons (#27 through #45) by playing, demonstrating, and encouraging the student from start to finish on the included audio CD. Pappy often said, 'Perfect practice makes perfect, careless practice makes mediocrity, and no practice makes nothing.' Since every individual has their own unique set of strengths and challenges, the time necessary to devote to studying this method will vary from student to student. The important thing is to establish a structured schedule that is appropriate for you. There are countless professionals, educators, and performers who claim that Mitchell on Trumpet is the most complete trumpet method ever written. The student who completes Mitchell's Method will be among a select few who possess the endurance, technique, and flexibility needed to conquer any obstacle that they may encounter in any musical passage ever written for trumpet. This Book 2 and all that follow are dedicated to Harold's son, Ollie Mitchell for his tireless pursuit to see his Pappy's work available for many future generations of aspiring trumpet players. Ollie touched so many lives, but sadly, was peacefully reunited with his Pappy when he passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on May 11, 2013. Harold Mitchell lived during a time when musicians played a vital role in popular entertainment. It was a nostalgic era of live performances in music & theater. Mitchell on Trumpet is the culmination of Pappy's life's work and still remains today as the only complete course ever written for learning to play the trumpet./ Méthode / Trompette

Par FRANCES-HOAD CHERYL. Pieces of Light was commissioned by the Flautadors for their 20 th Anniversary. When the group approached me about writing a piece, I had just finished reading Pieces of Light; The New Science of Memory by Charles Fernyhough, and it struck me that a work inspired by memories and how they are created in our brains would be very appropriate for a group of musicians celebrating such a wonderful milestone. A quote by Nabokov in particular provided ideas for both the rapid, rhythmic music that starts and ends the piece and the slow, 'light-filled' chords of the middle section: [In Nabokov's autobiography, Speak, Memory, he sees] 'the awakening of consciousness as a series of spaced flashes, with the intervals between them gradually diminishing until bright blocks of perception are formed, affording memory a slippery hold.' In addition, this work has really been shaped by the recorders themselves: before writing, I spent several hours with Ian Wilson (a member of the group) learning about the myriad different types of instrument I could write for. The renaissance instruments particularly appealed due to their fabulous timbre, despite the fact that, due to their open hole design, diatonic music works much better than anything chromatic. I became rather obsessed with the idea of writing chromatic music for diatonic instruments, and so in this piece I use recorders at both modern (A440) and baroque (A415, a semi-tone lower) pitch. This allowed me to write a piece that uses all twelve semitones of the scale throughout, whilst never writing a note for any individual recorder that falls outside its particular diatonic major scale: a compositional device that pleased me greatly! —Cheryl Frances-Hoad, 2019 / Date parution : 2022-09-07/ Répertoire / 4 Flûtes à Becs

In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Arrangements In Vestapol Tuning-'The Open D Tuning (D A D F# A D) also referred to as the Vestapol tuning is a powerful and evocative tuning that was widely used by guitarists in the 1920s to play country blues ballads rags and folk tunes. In this lesson I focus on arranging five of my favorite blues melodies in Vestapol plus an original instrumental. The religious tune When I Lay My Burden Down was in the repertoire of both Black and White traditional guitarists. I have arranged it in an Elizabeth Cotten/Mississippi John Hurt style. The beautiful blues Goin' To Germany was recorded by the Cannon's Jug Stompers in the 1920s. I have always wanted to find the right setting for this melodic countryblues and the Vestapol tuning gave me the feel and textures that I was looking for. Sam McGee played guitar behind Uncle Dave Macon when he recorded I've Got The Morning Blues in Vestapol. This is a fun tune to play and leads nicely in to Hesitation Blues a song recorded by many artists. My arrangement tries to combine a sliding jug sound with some funky blues licks. Peg Leg Howell's Skin Game Blues is a rare example of an early blues song with three distinct sections. Peg Leg played this with a bottleneck but for our arrangement we will rely on our fingers to make the notes sing out.We finish the lesson with Innocence Abroard. An original instrumental that ties together the right and left hand techniques we have studied.A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and played slowly on a split-screen. Bonus audio tracks of the original 1920s recordings are included. These are the records I first heard that influenced me to rearrange the melodies to the Vestapol tuning.' Stefan Grossman
