Blind Lemon Jefferson was a trail blazer, both as a singer and guitarist, but also as a commercial phenomenon, for he was the first blues musician to establish the tremendous appeal that blues, as played and sung by rural African American folk, had for the record-buying public. It is no exaggeration to say that the sales of Lemon’s records paved the way for a host of other solo rural blues musicians to record in his wake and made the record companies more willing to give other musicians a chance, in the hopes of achieving similar success. 

Lemon ’s record sales weren’t what made him a great musician, though - that could only be attributed to his startlingly virtuosic guitar - playing and soulful singing, developed over years of busking, building on his natural gifts with a great deal of practice and work. In the Guitar of Blind Lemon Jefferson author John Miller presents transcriptions, in standard notation and tablature, of 22 of Lemon’s greatest performances, with an additional essay examining Lemon’s senses of time and phrasing and his picking techniques. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. The fourth volume of the Lieder und Chorwerke (Songs and Choral Works) from the Reger Hybrid Edition of Works (RWA) presents songs Max Reger composed between November 1903 and July 1905. In his Opus 75 songs, Reger set verses by classic German poets, such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as folksong texts in his usual avant-garde manner. In the 30 songs from the first two collections of the Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, on the other hand, the composer distanced himself from his previous approach to songwriting by adopting a simpler, folk-like style. The popular Schlichte Weisen were also a concession to his publishers' wishes. The 'Charlie Parker Yardbird Originals' were originally published in 1954 by my dad, Dr. Charles Colin. In his memoir, 'Reflections II', he includes the colorful story of how it came to be that he met Charlie Parker and would publish this early work. Using most of Pop's lingo, here is a synopsis of that story: 'In the 40's - early 50's 'I' had eight studios on the second floor at 111 West 48th Street with several outstanding teachers. One of whom was Jimmy Abato who played bass clarinet with the Met. Between lessons, Jimmy relaxed at Jim and Andy's, a bar frequented by the top studio and recording artists where they would all meet for a few congenial moments in between sessions. One day Jimmy was chatting with Charlie Parker who confided that he was going through difficult times and was looking for a way to earn some cash. Jimmy, knowing that pop was into music publishing, suggested that Parker and he meet with the idea that he write a few Be Bop tunes that could be printed in book form. Even though Bebop was not yet in the mainstream or necessarily accepted by the music world, pop had great admiration and confidence in 'Charlie Parker' and was willing to make the considerable investment.' Each of the 5 tunes is presented here transposed into B-flat, C, and E-flat, alongside a piano accompaniment. They were groomed for stardom and had started singing as a duo before their fifteenth birthday. They were signed by Decca in 1965 and brilliantly marketed as clean-cut fashion icons. Their first single 'Don't Bring Me Your Heartaches' reached the UK top twenty but their success as twin performers lasted only three years. In 1968 Barry embarked on a solo career while Paul concentrated on writing and producing. Eloise with its melodramatic vocal style and heavily orchestrated backing was an early success of this new collaboration and went on to be covered by a variety ofartists, including punk legends The Damned.

The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment.
