With
Reading Key Jazz
Rhythms:Trombone Book &
CD set by Fred Lipsius,
you will learn essential
jazz rhythms first hand
from world-class
professionals! Reading
Key Jazz Rhythms is a
collection of 24 easy to
medium level jazz etudes,
and 24 simplified guide
tone versions of the
etudes. They are ideal
for learning the basic
language of jazz, swing
phrasing, and
articulation. A perfect
tool for preparing for
the jazz ensemble or for
any other
ensemble/orchestra which
performs jazz related
music (pops orchestras,
musical, studio, movie
scores, concert and
marching bands, etc.).
Each etude is based on a
specific rhythm or a
combination of rhythmic
figures. Some etudes
sound like very lyrical
improvised jazz solos,
while others are more
like a melody to a
standard. On the
accompanying CD the
soloist demonstrates the
24 melodious etudes
together with a
professional rhythm
section. You can also
improvise along with the
play-along tracks using
the chord symbols. The
guide tones are the
essential or defining
notes for each given
chord type. So if
improvising is new to you
and you find yourself
getting lost, you can
always return to a guide
tone and play
rhythmically around it.
Any etude and its
corresponding simplified
guide tone version can be
played together as a duet
(with or without the CD
accompaniment) with your
teacher or a friend.

Secret
Mission is a cinematic
depiction of a spy on a
mission to defeat a
nefarious villain. This
was inspired by my love
for several spies and
superheroes from movies
and television series,
both serious and
humorous. With exciting
parts for all players, I
hope your imagination is
sparked by this
accessible and melodic
piece. In the opening,
the spy receives his
mission in grand fashion,
as the title sequence
rolls across the screen.
After a dramatic pause
(m. 10), the spy is on
the chase! The melody at
m. 11 depicts the spy
doing reconnaissance on
his enemy. The villain
reveals his evil plan,
and soon, the hero and
the villain face off in
an epic battle! Who do
you think wins? Is it a
serious thriller or a
hilarious cartoon? Decide
for your own as you see
the end credits scroll!
Itas an epic journey sure
to spark your
imagination. For smaller
ensembles, the power
chords in the low brass
can be divided such that
trombones take the top
note, and euphonium the
bottom, or divide it as
is appropriate for your
ensemble. At m. 9, and as
it recurs, the students
should choose a note that
is comfortably in their
playing range that they
can play beautifully.
They should, however,
strive to choose a
different note than their
neighbor, and can change
the note as this
technique recurs. The
melody at measure 11
should sound soft, light,
and sneaky! Do not let
the students get too loud
at m. 17. If anything,
this section should be
slightly softer. The
woodblock and cowbell add
a touch of urgency (like
the ticking of a clock)
and humor (I got a
fevah!). Make sure the
countermelody at m. 25
can be heard clearly. At
m. 33, dynamic contrast
is very important. If
needed, a crash cymbal
from a drum set can be
used, and both cymbals
can be struck by a
drumstick. In either
case, suspended cymbal
should be played with a
drumstick (unless
rolling: then, use a pair
of yarn mallets). I
sincerely hope you and
your students enjoy the
cinematic journey, and
thank you for choosing my
music!. Secret Mission

A young
boy and his faithful dog
face a big decision. Dale
Kingston isn’t your
average boy. He saved the
Conn musical instrument
factory from burning to
the ground in Book One of
the Adventures with Music
series. In Dog Tags, Book
Two in the Adventures
with Music series, Dale
faces a big decision:
World War II is in full
swing, and he wants to do
his patriotic duty. But
Dale is only twelve years
old. How can he help
America? His dog, Scout,
provides the answer when
his master hears about
the U.S. Army’s Dogs
for Defense program. Dale
loves his pet, but he
knows Scout would do his
country proud by serving
as an animal courier for
American troops at war.
Should he enroll Scout in
the program? Along the
way, Dale begins trumpet
lessons as his school
forms a band for the
first time. He loves the
Andrews Sisters and their
hot new song, Boogie
Woogie Bugle Boy. His
dream is to play that
solo for the popular
trio. Could that dream
come true? Dog Tags, the
second volume in the
Adventures with Music
series, answers these
questions and more in a
story told from the heart
that will inspire young
readers everywhere.
Excerpt from the book...
The instruments arrive
and the students have
their first band
rehearsal, but Dale has
his mind on other
things.... Grandpa knelt
down and looked directly
into Dale's eyes. This is
a very brave thing you're
doing for your country
son. You're making the
biggest sacrifice any boy
can make by volunteering
your dog for the
military. Breaking free
from his grandfather,
Dale ran to Scout and
gave him one last deep
hug. He whispered, Do
your best, Scout. I love
you! Paul Kimpton grew
up in a musical family
and was a band director
in Illinois for 34 years.
His father Dale was a
band director and
professor at the
University of Illinois,
and his mother Barbara
was a vocalist. When Paul
is not writing, he is
reading or enjoying the
outdoors. Ann Kimpton
played French horn
through college and went
on to be a mother,
teacher, and high school
administrator. Her
parents, Henry and
Maryalyce Kaczkowski,
both educators, instilled
an appreciation for the
fine arts and the
outdoors in all of their
children. .
