The New Edition of Bach's Complete Organ Works
With repertoire works, musicians often have the choice between editions conceived for practical music-making and others that are more scholarly in concept. This also applies to the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, which are available today in various editions. Among them is that of Heinz Lohmann, which Breitkopf and Härtel began publishing in 1967 and whose concept strove for an amalgamation of practice and Urtext.
Current Urtext status, historically informed, edited with performers in mind:
More than 40 years later, the demands made on a new Urtext edition of Bach's organ works are as stringent as ever before. Next to the results of scholarly research on Bach and the sources, aspects of a historically informed performance practice are increasingly claiming our attention today. Also important for study, teaching and concert performance are, in addition to the above-mentioned demands, such external criteria as format, paper, convenient page turns and an easily legible layout that helps the user quickly grasp the musical context.
The new edition, beginning in 2010, also contains all keyboard works with pedal and the 'dubious works' that are hardly dubious anymore
The edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's organ works which Breitkopf and Härtel is beginning to publish in fall 2010 wants to do justice to these demands. Next to the core contents of the repertoire, it will also feature all of the master's 'clavier' works which require an independent pedal. Moreover, it will include all authentic early versions as well as the fragmentarily transmitted works. As to the dubious works, it will contain those which can be attributed to Bach today with considerable certainty.
It offers incerta, early, and alternative versions on CD-ROM
In this work group, the new edition uses for the first time the modern forms of editorial technique with which the synoptical depiction of various versions is made possible on CD-ROM. Thanks to the collaboration with the EDIROM project, which is a leader in the field of digital scientific editorial technique, the edition offers new types of solutions. Incerta, early, and alternative versions that cannot be included in the printed volumes for reasons of size or problems of authenticity, are published on CD-ROM, supplied with comments, and depicted synoptically. Thus, after comparing the versions, the player can decide upon a different version than the one printed in the volume, and can make a high-quality print-out of it. The texts and comments customary to the 'Breitkopf Urtext' editions comprehensive introductions, extensive source descriptions and text-critical observations can be found in the printed version of the volumes.

Werner Breig (* 1932)
studied Evangelical church music in Berlin as well as musicology in Erlangen and Hamburg. He obtained his doctorate in 1962 and completed his habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) in 1973. He then devoted himself to musicology at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Between 1997 and 2007 Breig was appointed General Editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagners letters. He is the author of many publications and editions, particularly of early clavier and organ music by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, but also of Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition).
Pieter Dirksen (* 1961)
studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. Dirksen issued a number of much-acclaimed solo recordings (Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Boehm, Louis Couperin, Bach-Vivaldi, Bachs Art of Fugue and Goldberg Variations). Edison Winner 2003.
Reinmar Emans (* 1953)
studied musicology in Bonn and wrote his doctoral thesis on the cantatas and canzonettas of Giovanni Legrenzi in 1982. From 1983 to 2008 he was an academic staff member of the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Institut Göttingen, and temporarily deputy of the managing director. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. In 2000 he was responsible for the conception and direction of the Thuringian state exhibition 'Der junge Bach: Weil er nicht aufzuhalten' in Erfurt. He has conducted research and produced publications on opera and the cantata in 17th-century Italy, on stylistic development in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and on editorial philology./ Répertoire / Orgue

Par PART ARVO. ‘I went to nursery school every day until the end of secondary school!’ Arvo Pärt says and pauses, staring slyly at his listener. ‘My mother worked at a nursery school in Rakvere, and I always went to visit her after my lessons.’ There, the future composer often sat at the piano and played or improvised for his little friends. Arvo Pärt is a composer best known for his 'tintinnabuli' compositions. It is a lesser-known fact that in his earlier years as a composer, he also wrote children's songs and piano pieces along with music for plays and animated films.
This volume, 'Songs from Childhood', contains a selection of Arvo Pärt's music for children from the period 1956-1970. In those years he was involved with several children's studios and theatres as the piano accompanist and composer. Most of his music for children came about by way of improvisation in rehearsals and was only later completed and put on paper. These pieces therefore retain all the spontaneity and playful spirit in which they were created.
'Songs from Childhood' includes a CD of the same name, providing recordings of the songs with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments in the roiginal Estonian language for your enjoyment. These new accompaniments, which are also included as backing tracks on the CD, were arranged by the composer Tauno Aints in collaboration with Arvo Pärt.
The sheet music of these arrangements is available on hire. The piano version doubles as a piano reduction.

Among Vivaldi’s many flute and recorder concertos, two, both for transverse flute, were known until a few years ago only in incomplete form: RV 431 and 432. Both are written in the comfortable and expressive key of E minor, are transmitted inautograph manuscripts and lack their second movement (RV 432 also lacks its third movement). The seemingly enigmatic instruction “Grave sopra il libro” replacing the second movement has given rise to the most fanciful hypotheses. The discovery in Edinburgh, in 2010, of a concerto for transverse flute in D minor entitled “Il gran Mogol” suddenly shed light on the situation: this was an earlier version of RV 431, now complete with its middle movement, a “Larghetto” that is verypossibly identical with the one missing in RV 431. This “Gran Mogol”, which belonged to Robert Kerr, a Scottish nobleman and amateur flautist, was already known by name to scholars on account of its listing in an eighteenth-century catalogue as partof a set of Vivaldi concertos bearing geographical titles: more recently, there has come to light a letter written by Vivaldi three months before his death in which the composer describes this set in detail. It is very likely that RV 431 and RV 432belonged to this group of works, the last known collection of its kind in Vivaldi’s oeuvre. Historical information about Händel's Water Music Suites is limited, but certainly these works were intended for two, possibly three, parties given by King George I on the Thames River, London, between 1715 and 1736. Händel and his orchestra played on a barge. Since then the some twenty-two separate original pieces have been organized into three Suites and nicknamed 'Water Music?, each having a separate key and likely corresponding to these river parties. This transcription of Water Music Suite II for saxophone quartet has two purposes: to make this music available to saxophonists for performance and education, and to provide in one volume the entire Suite II. The exception to the latter, because of the limits of endurance, is the exclusion of the short Adagio, a brief interlude between the fi rst two movements. Included though are the Allegro, Hornpipe, Minuet, Lentement, and Bourree. These works were originally meant for an outdoor performance, and one of the original intentions of the saxophone was to play in French military bands, also an open-air purpose. The original scoring of brass, woodwind, and string instruments (but no continuo) transcribe well for saxophones. Matching the ranges of instruments of the original to the saxophone quartet was a primary objective. In addition, this arrangement strives to disperse melodic material to all four saxophones so as to make the arrangement pleasing to all the members of the quartet while providing variety to an audience. Any dynamic, articulation, and tempo markings are to be taken only as suggestions so as to allow interpretation by the performers. The musical study and performance of all styles while using examples of composition and performance that represent excellence is necessary for saxophonists who wish to be well-rounded musicians. For the above reasons saxophonists are urged to listen to recordings of the original orchestration in order to learn and imitate proper interpretation of Baroque style. There are currently a number of excellent recordings of Handel's Suites on period instruments, such as (but not limited to) those by conductors John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, and the ensemble Tafelmusik. The Lewis-Clark State College Saxophone Quartet has for many years enjoyed performing Suite II for concerts, ceremonies and social settings, and I thank Advance Music for the opportunity to bring these great works to the profession. / 4 Saxophones (SATBar)

As aspiring fingerpicking guitarists started expanding their horizons from folk, blues, and ragtime in the 1970s, it was only logical to look towards early jazz tunes as a vast source for new possibilities. For one thing, they could follow the same evolutionary path from ragtime to jazz that had been taken by pianists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Harlem stride players like James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. These musicians all composed in a variety of styles, but their most ambitious piano solos expanded on the classic ragtime format developed by the likes of Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb, using several strains that usually changed keys at least once. Morton, the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, would record versions of tunes like King Porter Stomp and The Original Jelly Roll Blues that are similar to straight ragtime performances, and others where there is lots of room left for embellishment and jazz improvisation. The present collection is a bonanza for guitarists who want to tackle advanced arrangements along the lines of ragtime but featuring jazz age harmonies from the playing of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, WC Handy, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and other early jazz legends. In his preface to 'Piano Trios on Stage”, the arranger, David Brooker, reminds us that, just as the string quartet, the piano trio has always been one of the pillars of chamber music. In the 19th and early 20th century, it was almost like the later invention of the gramophone record, allowing larger works, in arrangement, as well as lighter pieces to be presented to small audiences, often as background music.
David comments that string players have plenty of easy material to introduce them to the pleasure of making music with other instrumentalists but when it comes to piano parts these are usually written or arranged with a teacher or more advanced student in mind. Timba represents a quantum leap for all the instruments of the rhythm section and especially the congas. The recordings of Tomás Cruz are considered the most advanced examples of Timba conga-playing and so fascinated the three coauthors that they sought out Tomás Cruz and spent a year and a half studying his style and meticulously documenting it before even considering the idea of publishing it. After many hundreds of hours of passionate research, this 'labor of love' eventually reached fruition as Volume III. Volumes II and I were then written to trace the roots of the style and to understand the path Tomás took to arrive at his phenomenal level of technical mastery and rhythmic creativity. Arcadia is a work for Violin, Soprano Saxophone and Piano, inspired by the painting 'Pastoral for E.W.' by John Craxton. As a painter, John was sometimes dubbed a 'neo-Romantic', but much preferred the term 'Arcadian' - hence the title of the piece. Pastoral for E.W. was painted in 1948 in St John's Wood after one of John's early trips to the island of Crete, and is a homage to Peter Watson, (co-founder of the magazine 'Horizon' and the Institute of Contemporary Arts), who was one of John's early mentors. In a letter in 1986, John recounted that: ''Pastoral for P.W.': was a celebration of the power of music. My sister (the distinguished oboist Janet Craxton) was learning the oboe on the same floor at the time, and the house was full of her scales and exercises coupled with my discovery that goats, which seem to be daemonic, willful and undisciplined, are held in thrall by the sound of a flute - or have I gone a step further and frozen them into my geometry with a paint brush? I suppose the flautist was in origin myself, but a very emblematic me!' Ian Collins in his book 'John Craxton' (2011 Lund Humphries) says of Pastoral for E.W.: 'A pipe-player and a herd of goats are held in a rugged grid of semi-cubist triangles. While references to Dionysus and Orpheus may be noted, it is essentially a fanfare for the ongoing life, light and landscape of Greece'. The music of Arcadia is also Grecian in inspiration. The traditional folk melodies Skaros Epirotikos, Vari Pogonisio, Ouzak To Tragoudhi Tis Xentias and Pentozalis - Pentozalis are present in Arcadia, after I researched the type of music that John would have heard in Crete in the late 1940's. In a letter of 3rd May 1984, John said that he was also listening to Stravinsky's Symphony in 3 Movements 'over and over again at the same time when I first started the painting', and aspects of the beginning of the last section of Arcadia (Allegro Moderato) pay homage to the Stravinsky, in an attempt to create something of the aural landscape that John would have been experiencing during his painting of Pastoral for E.W. As a personal friend, John was always encouraging and colourful in his comments about the music I played at the Craxton house in Hampstead (where I continue to rehearse and teach), and some of the jazzier themes and tonalities in Arcadia are simply the sort of music that would get him enthused, and (almost) dancing. ARCADIA is written for and dedicated to the memory of John Craxton RA (1922 - 2009). JOHN HARLE.
