Chamber Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.1035224 Composed by Frederik François Chopin (1810-1949). Arranged by James Strauss. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 33 pages. James Strauss #5806027. Published by James Strauss (A0.1035224). Unless your name is Mozart, Mendelssohn or Korngold, the first compositional steps are always the hardest. Chopin was probably no older than 14 when he set to work on a set of variations for piano and flute. Already in love with opera, he decided on the happy- ending aria, Non più mesta (No longer sad) from Rossini’s opera Cinderella. As the curtain comes down, Cinderella gleefully warbles, No longer sad beside the fire shall I sit alone, singing; my long years of heartache were but a streak of lightning, a dream, a game. We are unsure what actually prompted Chopin to select this for his unique combination of flute and piano, but it was most likely written for the composer’s father who was a capable amateur flute player. In the end, the piece was probably dedicated to Józef Cichowski, a close friend of his fathers and an amateur flautist as well. We are indeed fortunate that this early piece of Chopin juvenilia has actually survived, as Jozef Nowakowski, one of the composer’s friends, kept the single manuscript copy as a memento. For one reason or another, the work did not appear in print until 1953. This charming and fluent set of variations presents the theme and four decorated versions of the original tune. Added triplet figuration enlivens the first variation, while the second relies on a florid bel canto style to embellish the theme. Rapid downward arpeggios propel variation three, and the concluding variant displays rapid staccato figuration. Stylistically, there is nothing in this composition to suggest Chopin’s hand. You certainly won’t hear Chopin’s fingerprint in the piano part, as all the interesting bits are given to the flute. In addition, it’s the only Chopin piano part that can comfortably be played by most amateurs. Clearly, the future poet of the piano had a long way to go! Here in a Flute and orchestra version.

Full Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487104 Composed by Traditional Ukrainian Carol. Arranged by Constance Clark. Children,Christmas,Classical,Holiday. 22 pages. Constance Clark #1064079. Published by Constance Clark (A0.1487104). Carol of the Bells, a holiday favorite, is perfect for your Christmas or winter themed concert. This charming arrangement features 2 glockenspiels and the flute section (including piccolo). Duration: 1'30It is arranged at a easy level for symphonic orchestra (woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings). Instrumentation is semi-flexible, so it can be performed without some of the instruments or with substitutions. Notes for the director: The piccolo part is required. (Could possibly be replaced by another flute playing 8va when possible.) The flute parts are the hardest. (Range: E4-E6) If you have an oboe, it can double or replace flute 2 with parts taken down the octave as needed. Viola and Cello parts are identical, other than octaves. This arrangement can be done without one of them, but not without both. Bassoon or trombone/tuba could be put on the either part at your discretion. This arrangement can be done without Trumpet/Clarinet.I’d love to hear from you if you are considering or playing this piece. Any questions or feedback are welcome. I arrange songs for a wedding quartet and this is often chosen by the bride and groom for their special day. If you would like to watch a professional performance of this piece, visit my channel by typing Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, A Thousand Years, into Youtube. This arrangement is 4 mins long and in B flat major. It is not the easiest of keys for strings but neither is it the hardest. It needs lots of vibrato, especially for the first violin, and subtlety from the inner parts to make sure they are heard but do not overpower the melody. The excerpt is from the instrumental section in which I exercised a little creativity! I would think players would need to be ABRSM Grade 7 to be able to play this well, but I could be wrong! Send me a phone recording via Facebook. I would love to hear young people play this!

String Ensemble,String Quintet Cello,Double Bass,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767473 Composed by Mike Lyons. Baroque. Score and parts. 36 pages. Lyons Music Services #4613671. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767473). Basically it is a set of three dances loosely described as Allemande, Courante and Jygg. Orchestration is for string quintet Violins 1 & 2, Viola, Cello and Contrabass. The style of the first one is marcato, with a touch of irony! The Contrabass leads with an Alberti pattern followed by the first melodic idea stated on the Cello. This motif is eventually taken up by all the instruments. The melody then morphs into a lovely little B-section melody on the 1st Violin, with an obbligato on Violin 2, before the DS. Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long. Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the Contrabass and Cello. The middle section has a mournful Double Bassmelody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda. Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine.

Surprisingly simple, but 3 mins long.Movement 2 plays on the meaning of courante (running). It's in 3, as courantes were. Each instrument has an important role in keeping the music flowing - even the bassoon and horn. The middle section has a mournful bassoon melody with weaving contrapuntal lines from all the others. There's a bridge into the DS and the first section is repeated, leading eventually to the short coda.Movement 3 is the hardest movement. It's in 9/8 with lots of dynamism. It also has a few modern touches. After the short (2 bars) 12/8 section, there is a Berlioz-esque dance of the witches type of fever about the music. Then DS to fine
