C Instrument - Level 2 - Digital Download By Various. By Anonymous, Claudin de Sermisy, Henry VIII, Pierre Phalese, Thoinot Arbeau, John Dowland (1563- 1626), Michael Praetorius (1571-1621), Pierre Attaignant (1494-1553), Pierre Certon (1510-1572), William Cornysh (1470-1523), Juan Del Encina (1468-1530), Claude Gervaise (1540-1560), Giorgio Mainerio (1535-1582), Erasmus Widmann (1572-1634), and Tielman Susato (1500-1561). Arranged by Alastair Lodge. 151, 153, 162, Folk, Renaissance. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 38 pages. Wold Meridian #727149. Published by Wold Meridian
Chording to the Dance Masters is a selection of dance tunes that were collected originally between about 1500 and 1620. Printing made many of these tunes popular throughout Europe during these times, some of them composed by the printer/publishers themselves, but many more of them existed previously as rustic dance tunes or popular chansons. The works were originally published to be played by three to five instrumentalists, with no particular instruments specified. They suited consorts or “choirs” of instruments that were depicted in the illustrations of Agricola, Mersenne and most notably Praetorius and are now preserved in museums around the world.<br> <br> Many editions exist in the 3, 4 or 5 parts as originally published, and these are an absolute joy to perform from, where the interweaving parts create interesting harmonies that demonstrate the skills of these renaissance composer/arranger/publishers. Playing with modern reproductions of the early instruments will recreate textures and sounds unique to this period. However, not everyone is lucky enough to either own these instruments or else have contact with others with whom they could form ensembles. This book aims to widen the experience out to those who would like to play these tunes on their own or with the accompaniment of a guitar, keyboard or other available chordal instrument. Fake books abound for those who wish to play Jazz, Folk, Classical and Popular music where the melody is annotated with chords so that players can access these tunes in their own way. As far as I am aware, this has not often been done for the player who wishes to busk their way through music of the Renaissance period.<br> <br> I have attempted to include all the chords implied by the polyphonic parts of the original publications, simply because it is in the transitions of the harmonies under the melodies where the genius of the original arranger/publisher resides. Those who go on to explore the original versions may look forward to the way in which each line presents the player with intrinsically beautiful counter melodies.<br> <br> At first, the rapidity of chord changing can be a bit daunting, so I have marked out what I consider to be the essential chords for accompaniment in boxes. Playing just these will provide adequate accompaniment, whilst leaving the more adventurous scope to enhance their performance by referencing some of the other chords. You can hear the chording arrangements together with the original 3, 4 or 5 part versions of all 44 pieces on a YouTube playlist which has been made as a companion to this volume at<br> <br> https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYRWH2nycMkMoIoEYEMVPa_EXY6NVDpNS<br> <br> As well as the solo or player in a duo, this book would also be of value for someone who is used to reading chords rather than melody lines wishing to join in with a renaissance consort. The selection I have chosen represents quite a few of the “standards” that have become regularly played since the revival of renaissance music in the late 1960s. It is hoped that should this volume prove popular, companion volumes with all the parts provided for the same pieces could make essential repertoire for the budding renaissance dance consorts of the future.

EASY RENAISSANCE GUITAR MUSIC - Volume 3
Guitar
Composed by Various. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Renaissance. Individual part. …
(+)
Composed by Various. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Renaissance. Individual part. 77 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #889149. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis
This collection contains sixty easy Renaissance pieces from various European countries, and from works of well known, but also obscure or anonymous composers, transcribed for the classical guitar mainly from lute, vihuela, and bandore sources. The pieces will be published in three volumes, each volume containing twenty pieces. <br> I have tried to include pieces of varied difficulty in all three volumes and also to keep the upper level of technical difficulty to the contemporary grade IV level of the A.B.R.S.M. which takes the student to the intermediate level (grades IV-VI).<br> The pieces in each volume are given in two versions, first as decorated pages in ordinary notation, and then the same pieces are again given in undecorated pages of notation and tablature. Therefore each volume contains two books in one and the choice is left to the user whether to keep the volume as presented, or to construct his own book by inclusion or deletion of unwanted pages, blank pages, etc, for use either as a printed or a tablet-screen book version. The addition of tablature of course results in doubling the number of pages needed for the presentation of the pieces, therefore the staff sizes are here reduced to an appropriate degree which can maintain the two-page view principle of any piece without need for automatic or manual page turners, foot pedals etc.<br> The inclusion of tablatures which shows a preference for open string combinations whenever that is possible, clarifies sufficiently the left hand playing positions without need for additional fingerings.<br> Having said that, my professional advice to all guitar students is to abandon completely their reliance on tablatures and study seriously through many easy collections of music such as the present one in order to familiarise themselves to all aspects of musical notation. And always have in mind that tablatures were invented and still are in use only for fretted instruments, and only due to commercial (publisher’s) considerations primarily, while other string instrumentalists neither have them available, nor need them in order to study/play music.<br> <br> Metronome marks are only suggestions that need not be taken too literally and are placed mainly for guiding a score writer programme such as Sibelius for performance and extraction of audio and video files. To this end many other expression and/or technique and tempo marks may have been added to the score and made invisible.<br> <br> NAVIGATION INDEXES – External and Internal links<br> <br> The second page in every volume is an index divided into three columns. The first column has the titles of the pieces as active invisible links which take the user to the relevant tablature page. The header of that page brings the user back to this index.<br> The second column has visible links (in frames) to live performances of the pieces either by professional guitarists or students, which are only for getting familiar with the music, but not as suggestions that particular performances should be followed for study purposes.<br> The third column contains active links to information about particular composers, found mainly in Wikipedia, but sometimes also in other external sources.<br> The third page in every volume contains a thematic index of active links to the decorated (without tablatures) pages of the pieces. The header of every decorated page brings the user back to this index.<br> Finally, the titles of all decorated and tablature pages are active links of interconnection between these pages.<br> <br> This product was created by a member of ArrangeMe, Hal Leonard’s global self-publishing community of independent composers, arrangers, and songwriters. ArrangeMe allows for the publication of unique arrangements of both popular titles and original compositions from a wide variety of voices and backgrounds.

Fifteen elegant, stately melodies from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods adapted from popular dance tunes, keyboard works and lute songs of the 16th and early 17th centuries. Freely harmonized, they capture the flavor of the period. The "primo" harp part can stand alone as a solo arrangement, while the "secondo" harp part is designed to enhance and fill out the first part. Composers are Gervaise, Dowland, Praetorius, Morley, Arbeau, Caroubel, and the ever popular "Anonymous".<br> <br> Contents: Bransle de Bourgogne, Galliarde for Queen Elizabeth I, Siciliano, Captain Piper's Gailliarde, Pavane d'Angleterre, Spagnoletta, Bransle de Champagne, Nancie, Pavane: Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie, L'Espagnoletta, Ladie Laiton's Alman, Pavane: Le Force d'Hercole, Sleep Wayward Thoughts, Bransle de la Torche

Large Ensemble Alto Recorder,Baritone Recorder,Bassoon,Flute,Oboe,Soprano Recorder,Tenor Recorder - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.742464 Composed by Anthony Holborne, Claude Gervaise, Etienne du Tertre, F. Giesbert, Michael Praetorius, and Pierre Caroubel. Arranged by Javier MartÃnez Maya. Concert,Instructional,Renaissance,Standards. Score and parts. 45 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #4363001. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742464). Renaissance music is European music written from about the year 1400 to 1600. This section of time is called the Renaissance, a word which means rebirth. The Renaissance comes between the Middle Ages and the Baroque times.Putting music into time sections does not mean that there were quick changes of type. Music changed slowly, and early Renaissance music was similar to Medieval music. Slowly music-writers started to try new ideas. A lot of medieval church music had become very hard with lots of rules about rhythms and clashes of notes to make dissonances. A lot of Renaissance composers wrote music which was smoother and more gentle. The music was still polyphonic with each voice having a share of melody. Music was starting to become less modal and more tonal. By the time the Baroque period started composers were using a system of major and minor keys like we do today.Taken from https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_music

Brass Ensemble,French Horn Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1499365 Composed by Various. Arranged by L.C. Harnsberger. Advent,Christmas,Early Music,Holiday,Renaissance. 28 pages. LCH Music #1075419. Published by LCH Music (A0.1499365). The Renaissance period of music was filled with stunning pieces that are rarely heard today. The Christmas music of that era is characterized by beautiful modal melodies and fascinating, driving rhythms that can sometimes be wonderfully syncopated. “Three Renaissance Carols” brings together three magnificent carols, skillfully arranged for horn quartet. The collection starts with the Latin carol “Gaudete,” which features droning reminiscent of bagpipes, and evokes the sounds of Renaissance instruments like the crumhorn and shawm. Next is “Ríu Ríu Chíu,” a contrapuntal Spanish carol that gained popularity when the Monkees performed it on their 1967 Christmas episode. The piece concludes with the energetic and syncopated Spanish carol “E la don, don,” providing a rousing finale.“Three Renaissance Carols” is a unique and engaging arrangement that will captivate audiences with appealing and extraordinary melodies. It is perfect for holiday concerts, church services, caroling parties, and recitals.

Ukulele - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1148100 By Michael P Walker. By Melchioro de Barberis and Giacomo Gorzanis. Arranged by Michael P Walker. Classical,Renaissance. Score. 33 pages. Michael P Walker #748290. Published by Michael P Walker (A0.1148100). Melchior de Barberis (1500-1549) was an Italian lutenist and composer. His book Opera Intitolata Contina was published in Venice in 1549. Most of the book is dedicated to the lute, but the final few pages of the book contain 4 pieces (fantasias) for the renaissance guitar. Barberis refers to the instrument as the chitara da sette corde (guitar with seven strings). Giacomo Gorzanis, (1525 – 1578), was a lute virtuoso, blind, and possibly a member of the nobility. He was born in Apulia, near Naples, and probably trained at the Spanish court in Bari. Gorzanis traveled to Austria where he became a citizen and where he published four collections of lute tablature and two collections of Neapolitan lute songs. About Michael P Walker I studied guitar at Birmingham-Southern College under David Walpert who was a student of Andre Segovia and I have been playing guitar, ukulele, Baroque guitar, and the lute for more than fifty years. Just as Adrian Le Roy published these pieces to expand the repertoire of the Renaissance guitar, I have transcribed these compositions with the hope of exposing this rich, beautiful music from the Renaissance to a wider audience of guitar and ukulele players. Along with this book, there are more than 80 books of arrangements of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic era music for the baritone ukulele and there are more than Thirty-Five others with arrangements for the Low G ukulele. You can find them here: https://morgancomusic.com.

Published by Michael P Walker (A0.810031). Here are 48 lute compositions from the Renaissance by Antonio Rotta, (1495-1549) who was an Italian lutenist, composer, and music teacher of the Renaissance period in Padua which was part of the Republic of Venice and renowned for its university. Canon Scardeonius of Padua wrote in 1560 that Rotta was not only virtually unrivaled in Italy as a lutenist, but was also an excellent teacher and had grown quite rich by giving lessons on the lute. These pieces have been transcribed for the baritone ukulele, Renaissance guitar, low G ukelele, and many other four-course instruments. Of course, they may all be played on the guitar.

Oboe,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1485586 Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Early Music,Renaissance. Score and part. 17 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #1062647. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1485586). These are eleven of the most well-known dances of the Renaissance, (in five movements) selected from the famous collection entitled Terpsichore, published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius. They are sure to be a welcome addition to the oboe player's repertoire. The notes of the oboe part have been kept well within the elementary range and the highest note is the B just above the treble staff.By the time Michael Praetorius published his dance collection, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. The name is pronounced terp-SI-cory and rhymes with the word “hickory”. The original publication consisted of 312 dances in four, five and six parts. Although the dances were probably conceived for string ensemble Praetorius was well aware that in practice, they would be played by any instruments that happened to be available. These arrangements for oboe and keyboard are based on the original 1612 publication. The music sounds more authentic using a harpsichord rather than a piano, or the harpsichord sound of a digital keyboard. The keyboard part may be interpreted quite freely with ornamentation added as appropriate. During the Renaissance, it was common practice to combine separate dances to create something of more substantial duration. A similar practice is used in these arrangements which are as follows: 1. Three Gavottes; 2. Two Ballets; 3. Two Bourées; 4. Two Courantes and 5. Two Voltas. These delightful dances are sure to add a sparkle to any oboe recital.

Arranged by Alastair Lodge. Chamber,Early Music,Renaissance. 93 pages. Wold Meridian #993504. Published by Wold Meridian (A0.1411172). A selection of 44 Dance Consort pieces from publications dating from 1500 to 1620 in three, four or five part scores and fully chorded with lyricsRenaissance Dance music provides some of the most simple yet satisfying pieces to play in ensemble on a wide range of instruments.  They are suitable for recorders, modern strings, woodwinds or brass, or where available, reproductions of 16th century instruments, such as crumhorns, viols or shawms to name but a few.The 44 pieces that first  appeared in the publication Chording to the Dance Masters, are  presented in full score and with separate parts for each of the lines.  What is more, a number of the pieces have been re-edited to include their lyrics, should you wish to perform them vocally.  They represent some of the best known secular pieces of the Renaissance repertoire. What makes this Wold Meridian edition of these pieces different  from others is that they have been created to make performing them as accessible as possible.  Chords have been provided so that the piece can be played with just the melody line and a simple accompaniment.  It also means that keyboard players or fretted strings can join in with ensembles, giving extra sparkle to performances. Each piece can be heard in a video on YouTube with illustrations and historical background information.  Even more helpful for players who are less experienced in reading harmony lines, there is a YouTube video link featuring each part, where it is heard initially on its own with the chords, on repeats with the melody line added and finally together with all the parts in the whole ensemble.  If you have not had the pleasure of playing in consort with other people, you could not do better than start with these Wold Meridian editions.
