Death is a common topic in his writings. Yet despite the somber imagery, there is often a strength and resilience. The journey of death is described, but not taken. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.†And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.†Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again†and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…†Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...†The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. [One might hear the voice as “perched atop†the rising chords.] This is one of the most personal lines of Dylan Thomas' poetry. As the poet speaks to his father, the climax of the song comes with the rising phrases of “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The final chords are dissonant, marked “with determination and triumph.†Duration: 10:10.

NOTE: Beginning musicians (or those new to Handbells and Boomwhackers® ensemble playing) may find the Boomwhackers® part easier since it only contains quarter notes and rests without the syncopation of the Handbells.This sheet music is notated for 13-note (one octave, C to C chromatic scale) instruments with Handbells on one staff and Boomwhackers® on a second staff creating an instrumental ensemble (requires one set of each instrument). Handbells play the melody while the Boomwhackers® keep a steady beat with three-note chords. Included in this set of scores is a combined score with both instrument parts on a grand staff plus a separate score for each instrument. A note and chord reference chart is also provided. To aid in the learning and teaching of this song or for use with other instruments (such as a Ukulele), chord names are included on the Boomwhackers® staff and score. Lyrics are provided on the grand staff for sing along enjoyment or when using this arrangement as the accompaniment for a unison choir. In addition, a complete set of scores for 4 ringers and 4 whackers is provided. Though there are multiple combinations for the number of ringers and whackers needed for any given performance, this extra set of scores is specifically designed for 8 performers. For each ringer and whacker, the 1-staff score shows only the notes they are assigned. This alternate score format may be easier to sight-read since the only notes on the staff are the assigned notes allowing the player to focus on rhythm. This set of scores uses colored noteheads corresponding to the Boomwhackers® color scheme. Only filled noteheads (quarter and eighth notes) are used so the notes are full color and easier to see (this does not indicate the bells need to be silenced immediately before the next beat). Also, only quarter and eighth rests are used to help visualize the number of beats per measure. All sharps and flats are displayed as well (shown in the key of C); a helpful reminder for beginning musicians. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917288). The Child is a Song was composed in 1994 and is dedicated to Dawn Schuessler and the handbell choir of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in St. Louis, MO. The premiere performance of this piece happened that year on Christmas Eve, performed by singer/songwriter and guitarist Peter Mayer, accompanied by piano and two members of the Gethsemane handbell choir playing on bell trees to accommodate the ostinato patterns. This version is for piano and tenor voice, with optional handbells. If handbells are used, they should duplicate the right hand piano part at m. 16 – 28, m. 53 – 54, and m. 59 – 64. These measures have been marked on the score with an * sign. The sound clip attached is a digital track which is not ideal since the lyrics are not sung by the digital tenor. Hopefully, this does not detract from the overall score.

We’re really excited to present our collection of sixty of the best-loved hymns ever composed, presented in three books. Arranged for violin, cello and piano they are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. To make the music accessible to less experienced string players, the range of the notes has been kept fairly low so that many of the arrangements can be played in first position, though more experienced players would probably want to avoid open strings. The cello part does not follow the bass but instead plays an independent tenor line using to the mid to upper range of the instrument. The top note in the cello part is the F sharp above the bass clef. The piano part has been kept as straightforward as possible with the left hand playing the bass part. To extend the possible uses of this collection, there’s also a melody part printed in the bass clef, an octave lower than the violin part. This could of course be used for cello solo or indeed for any other bass clef instrument. Included in the 50-page PDF file is an optional bass part which follows the piano left hand and could be used for string bass or bass guitar. With such a small ensemble, a conductor is hardly necessary and to save on costs the pianist reads from the score. For this reason, the piano part in the score has been slightly enlarged.
