Everett,Mark Olson, conductors; and Nora Skuta, piano, the Slovak Radio Symphony Winds, Kirk Trevor, conductor. These three marvelous piano soloists served as the inspiration for the work. The concerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.†Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeserved attention. The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, and as a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonal constructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic idea behind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the first movement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirected formal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious. The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†the musical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and some disjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement. The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass. The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio. ISBN 9790570484843.This quintet is an early work, composed in 1895. Compared to the more familiar quintets of Mozart, Weber and Brahms, this composition is not as well known. However, it is every bit the equal of it's more famous brothers, and deserves to receive more recognition. The first movement alternates dark and troubled sections with livelier, folk dance like music with almost the feeling of Dvorak's slavonic dances. The second movement features a long melodic line, which is decorated with increasingly elaborate lower parts. The third movement is a frenetic and nervous scherzo, which switches between 9/8 and 3/4 times giving it a stuttering feeling at times. The finale returns to the minor key dramatic feel of the first movement, with much use of the scotch snap rhythm adding another folk music-like flavour. Overall, stylistically this piece fits beautifully between the Weber and Brahms quintets, and should be more widely performed. Originally published for clarinet in A and string quartet, this version presents the work to be played on solo clarinet in Bb accompanied by a quartet of two Bb clarinets, an alto clarinet in Eb (although a substitute part for another clarinet in Bb is included) and a bass clarinet in Bb. The solo part has been left unchanged; the string parts have been altered to suit the new medium. The somewhat stratospheric first violin part has been tamed and brought down to a more suitable range; the articulation and dynamics have been edited and corrected so as to present a more unified work. The problematic third movement, with its unmarked and hard to spot shifts between 9/8 and 3/4 has been presented in a more readable fashion.

We first published the complete Introduction, Theme and Variations for Euphonium in 1991 and performed it on a 1830s ophicleide and a 1840s square piano in 1993. This edition comes with a shortened introduction,theme and variations. Duration around 8 ½ min. Solo part in treble and bass clef.Message from Sean Brennan:This arrangement, or more correctly transcription, was first published by us in 1991, although its origins go back much further than that. I do remember being transfixed in the 1970s by Richard Stoltzman’s recording of the original form of the work for clarinet and orchestra. I was convinced it would work for Euphonium and that one day there would be players with the technique, and above all musicality, to bring it off. For me, this vision came true in 1994 when we first performed the piece in Birmingham in 2004, and then again 10 years later when David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band recorded the Theme and Variations. Rossini composed the Introduction, Theme and Variations for clarinet and orchestra in 1810 at the request of a fellow student at the Conservatorio di Bologna. Although the autograph score has been lost, and some musicologists have questioned the authenticity of the work, I find no reason for doubt since Rossini recycled some of the material in later works, and apart from that his evervascent musical personality is abundant from beginning to end.

Since the term “flautino” was not generally used in Vivaldi’s day, scholars have speculated ever since about what instrument Vivaldi had in mind. The leading candidate is the sopranino recorder. However, later in the 18th century the transverse flute replaced the recorder in general use, and a new edition of RV 443 was published for the piccolo, a member of the flute family.There are several passages with only the bass line accompanying, and no figures, so I have realised some of these. Some of the accompaniment rhythm patterns, originally for strings, seem too heavy-footed on clarinets, so I have made a few tiny modifications in them. ISBN 9790570484003.A Little Threeness was composed in March of 1989 and had it's premiere at the nternational Double Reed Convention in Manchester, England on August 14th 1989. The compostion is approximately nine and a half minutes in length and explores different combinations, ranges and character effects that are possible with the oboe, clarinet and the bassoon. My intention was to write a relatively light work that would require a high degree of rhythmic precision and dialogue between the players. Colour, dynamics and articulation are prime aspects for musical development. I was interested not only in the combination of these instruments as a trio grouping, but also in solo and duet combinations. Consequently there is a duet for oboe and clarinet, a duet for oboe and bassoon, and a movement for solo bassoon. There is one area of the work that uses borrowed material and that is the second movement which, essentially, is a parody on the opening phrases of the hymn tune 'Come, Ye Thankful People, Come'.
