Anthony Costandius Music #14899. Published by Anthony Costandius Music (A0.938331). A piece for solo Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra. The church was made a cathedral in 1564 when the city was granted its bishopric. The cathedral was built on the site of the Aljama Mosque in the first third of the 14th century. The name of this structure, El Salvador Cathedral, literally means the Cathedral of the Transfiguration. The cathedral has three portals: the Puerta de las Cardenas (Portal of the Chains, 14th century) is in Islamic style, the Puerta de Loreto (mid-15th century) is Gothic, and Puerta de la Anunciación (Portal of the Annunciation, built in 1588 by Juan Inglés), which has a Renaissance-style triumphal arch-shape. Part 1: Introitis. The saxophone mimics a chant based on the metre of the Introitis: Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant iustum: aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem (Bedew us, heavens, from above; ye clouds, rain down the Just One. Let the earth be opened up, and produce the Saviour. The intervals 1 (tonic), 5 (dominant), 6 (super-dominant) and 4 (subdominant), based on the year 1564 referred to in the section above, are used as the basis for the harmony progression for the string section. Part 2: Puerta de las Cardenas Acts 12:3–19 says that Peter was put into prison by King Herod, but the night before his trial an angel appeared to him, and told him to leave. Peter's chains fell off, and he followed the angel out of prison, thinking it was a vision (verse 9). The prison doors opened of their own accord, and the angel led Peter into the city. The visit from the angel, release from the chains and the prison, as well as the journey into the city is expressed against the background of the Islamic design of the portal, hence the referral to Arabian rhythms and scales in the music. Part 3: Puerta de Loreto The Puerta de Loreto is of gothic design. Loreto refers to the Italian city of Loreto in the province of Ancona. It is said that the holy house where the Mother Mary lived in Nazareth was translated miraculously to Loreto on December 19, 1294 - more than 700 years ago. The house did not go straight to Loreto, but in the year 1291 it was miraculously transported from Nazareth to the town of Tersatto in Dalmatia (Croatia). The local population, filled with astonishment, did not know how to explain its sudden appearance. Their Bishop, who was gravely ill, now appeared in their midst cured. He had prayed to the Virgin Mary that he might be strong enough to see the prodigy for himself, and the Mother of God appeared to him, surrounded by Angels, saying: My son, you have called for me, and here I am. I came to give you succor and to reveal to you the mystery [of the translation of the Holy House] you desire to know. The holy dwelling is the very house where I was born and raised. It was there that I received the good news brought by the Archangel Gabriel and I conceived the Divine Infant by the operation of the Holy Ghost. It was there that the Word was made flesh... For you to bear witness to all that I am telling you now, you will suddenly be cured and return to full health after the long illness you have borne, so that through you all will believe in this miracle. Part 4: Puerta de la Anunciación The Annunciation is the Christian celebration of the announcement by the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, marking his Incarnation. Gabriel told Mary to name her son Jesus, meaning Saviour. Part 5: Exit The work ends with a re-interpretation of the first section, the Introitis. This is to bind the work together, but also to again reflect on the text, as stated: Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant iustum: a periatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem, and to comtemplate how that gives meaning to the being, essence and history of the Catedral de Orihuela.

A constituent nation of the United Kingdom, Scotland lacks an official, legislated national song; in fact there are several songs in use as national songs of Scotland. The one most often considered as the unofficial national anthem (and most often presented as Scotland’s anthem at sporting matches) is Flower of Scotland, written by Roy Williamson in 1965 for the popular folk group The Corries. It was first used in a sporting match in 1974 by the Scottish national rugby team in 1974, sung by the team. When the British God Save the Queen was sung before a rugby match in 1988 to represent Scotland, and was met by derision from the crowd, Flower of Scotland was adopted as Scotland’s pregame anthem. Flower of Scotland, however, has not been adopted in any official basis as the Scottish anthem. Other popular national songs of Scotland have sometimes used as unofficial national anthems, the most common being Scotland the Brave (a traditional melody (sheet music) with lyrics writted by Cliff Hanley in 1950). Scotland the Brave was used as the Scottish anthem at the Commonwealth Games until 2010 (when it was replaced by Flower of Scotland) and is most commonly heard on the bagpipe, the Scottish national instrument. When the Scottish Parliament was opened in 1997, another national song (A Man’s A Man for A’ That by national poet Robert Burns) was used, which isn’t usually presented as a Scottish anthem. The choice of this song may have been to duck the controversy of choosing one of the previously mentioned national songs as an official regional anthem, or by using God Save the Queen (the anthem of the United Kingdom, of which Scotland is a part). Bremner's original 1780 London publication and also arranged by Hugo Riemann, and again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.It is actually the 1st movement of Gallo's 1st Trio Sonata.It was used by Igor Stravinsky as a basis of the first movement (Sinfonia) of his Neo Classical Ballet Pulcinella.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Pergolesi's melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.Arranged double reed trio (ob.,c.a. and bsn. with alternative oboe 2 for cor anglais.

From the composer's program notes included with this purchase:I have taken Schubert’s famous setting and arranged it in a set of musical homages to other composers. I have also included Schubert’s original theme, transposed down to F, and I would recommend playing it twice in the beginning to give your audience a good idea of it.For most of the pieces, I tried to capture the composer’s overall style; however, there are a few particular pieces that are either quoted or used as the stylistic basis, as follows: Mozart - I based this variation, stylistically, on Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major (K.467), specifically movement two (Andante), as well as some of his earliest childhood piano compositions. Symphony 40 in G minor (K.550) is quoted rhythmically. Strauss, Jr. - For inspiration, I used Du und Du, Op. 367, a waltz that is derived from various parts of his beloved operetta, Die Fledermaus. I quoted rhythms from this, as well as from Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410. Joplin - I didn’t base this on any particular piece of Joplin’s; I tried to include elements that are common in his rags (a short introduction, arpeggiated diminished seventh chords, chromaticism, syncopation over a boom-chuck). Perhaps the best advice comes from Joplin himself: Don’t play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast. Porter - I had to include an offering from the Great American Songbook! Frank Sinatra recorded several of Porter’s well-known tunes in the 1940s, such as Easy To Love, Night and Day, and I Love You; his renditions of these songs are heavy on the schmaltz and sentimentality, which is exactly what I was trying to achieve in this variation.Bach - The minor variation! I had Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 (Little Fugue) in mind when writing this.der Jodelkönig - As Heidenröslein is a strophic, folk-songesque German piece, I thought it fitting to end the variations with an imitation of traditional Alpine yodeling. It is named in honor of Franzl Lang, the Yodelking.

It is a constitutional monarchy and has a total area of 62 square miles. The melody of Liechtenstein's national anthem is from England, and it’s almost identical to the British anthem except that the chorus is always repeated. The melody has been a national song in some European countries for many years and was used in the Swiss national anthem until 1961. O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. “What is the Grass?†is also an adaptation of a much longer poem, one of Whitman’s deepest, and most mysterious. The poem begins as a child-like meditation on grass; as hope, as an embodiment of new life and new growth in the plant world. Then suddenly there is a somber turn with the line “And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.†Here Whitman enters an extended mediation on how grass connects life and death, informed by his experiences in the Civil War. Hope returns with the line: “They are alive and well somewhere,†leading to the mysterious final line: “And to die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier…†Here Whitman affirms that death can be an initiation into a broader participation of existence. In the words of poet Ivan M. Granger, Whitman offers a “Zen-like riddle that doesn’t offer an answer so much as a pathway of questioning.†My musical setting follows Whitman’s exploration, first taking a child’s point of view, expressed with lilting melodies set in a lively compound meter. The entry of the tenor soloist indicates a change of mood to the serious. The first mood returns, leading to a climax on the words “And led forward life…â€, set in 9-part harmony. The mood turns reverent, as the tenor soloist intones: “All goes onward and outward; nothing collapses.†The piece ends with a tone of gentle, slightly ironic questioning. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

The first movement “The Trumpeter Taken Captive†is a fable about how one’s actions affect the outcome. The trumpeter, who incites others to do battle, is as guilty as those who slay the enemy. The euphonium represents the trumpeter by playing battle tunes. Then the ensemble plays capture music, begging music, fatal music representing the slaying of the trumpeter (euphonium), and finally music representing the moral of the story. “The Boy Who Cried Wolf†is the basis for the second movement. The allegory is that nobody believes a liar. The flute plays a shepherd’s tune to represent the bored shepherd boy. The ensemble plays excited music three times as the boy cries wolf, the first two times just to amuse himself. After the third time when nobody responds to his cries, the flute plays a lament to end the movement. The third movement reflects the story of “The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg.†A golden euphonium melody accompanied by rich harmony represents the golden eggs laid by the goose. The ensemble then plays greedy music that is followed by a minor key lament as the farmer has killed his rich source of income because of his greed. A sweet dancing flute solo begins movement four appropriately named “The Fisherman and His Flute.†This short fable has the allegory of “timing is everything.†The poor fisherman expected the fish to jump out of the sea in response to his flute playing to no avail. When the ensemble plays a similar tune, it represents his success when he uses his net. The fisherman says “you bloody fish, when I played the flute you wouldn’t dance, but as soon I stopped, you started up.†The race between the “Tortoise and the Hare†is the subject of the last movement. The plodding euphonium represents the tortoise and the fast and agile flute represents the hare. The flute takes a nap in the middle of the movement and by the time the flute wakes up, it is too late to catch up with the slow and steady tortoise. The race is not always to the swift.

The bass part must be played as written because every note is a part of what is happening in the rest of the band. If the bass line is cluttered it won’t swing. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. PREFACEThese eight suites for solo recorder are amongst the relatively fewcompositions by Daniel de Moivre that have survived for us through the centuries.Not very much is known of the life of this composer, except that hewas a French Huguenot, the younger brother of the well-known French mathematician Abraham de Moivre, with whom he movedfrom France to England after their imprisonment in France for being protestants, and it is recorded that they both became denizens ofGreat Britain on 16/12/1687. It seems that both brothers earn their livings mostly by teaching in their respective subjects for the rest of their lives. Daniel de Moivre had early training in France in recorderand composition, and in England he was known as one of the bestrecorder players at the time, together with Paisible, Banister Loilet and others.The solo suites that follow are of moderate technical difficulty andform a good basis for advancing the recorder technique to higher levels. But primarily are well made baroque dance tunes that can beused for both study and recreation.All ornaments are marked as trills starting usually on the upper note,but some of them can be interpreted as mordents or inverted mordents. There are quite a few baroque-rondeau movements withinthese suites, marked with double bar lines but without repeats.Repeats are optional here, and it depends on personal aesthetics. If we play the intervals in the chord one after another, we produce an arpeggio. But since all intervals, chords, and arpeggios are generated by scales, it follows that scales are the basis of all music from these scales we will find our JAZZ LINES, which is what this book is about. The following is a list of most of the jazz scales the student will encounter as he becomes involved in the study of improvising. When we improvise, we use as our weapons the scale, harmony and melody. The two dimensions in music are the harmony (vertical) and melody (horizontal). It is highly recommended that every student of improvising, know his scales in all positions and a variety of chords that the scales generate. All scales should be played in at least four positions especially the 1st position forces one to learn the theory. All other position pattern scales must be transposed throughout the guitar. The author has written a few pages in the beginning of the book serving as a prerequisite for the jazz lines to follow. It is essential that the student know the scales, key signatures, intervals, and chord constructions that will be used throughout the book. In order to benefit fully from this approach to jazz, the student must understand the full meaning of the words practice and analysis. Most students confuse practice with playing or reading through the exercise. To really improve and absorb the material, every phase must be practiced. This means the fingering must be committed to memory, slowly at first and then as fast as technique allows. The idea must be so ingrained in the mind that it flows from any part of the fingerboard that the performer desires. This is the way great players approach an idea – from any fret, string or position! If there is no harmonic or melodic analysis of the material being studied, then the learning skill becomes superfluous and there is no comprehension and absorption, and without this proper digestion the performer cannot use it as his taste dictates. All of the great players, have had a great technique and this is the first goal of the young student – “great chops.†As the student matures, musicianship will grow but technique is at the grasp of all who seek it. Start today to acquire it!
