Turner’s The Sun Setting Through Vapour was my inspiration because of the different layers and zones of interest which influenced my composition’s structure. The central focus of the painting is the setting sun in the central background of the work. The reflection of the sun draws the eye into the foreground and the market scene in the front right zone. This created the first section of my composition, the idea of the sun setting through the vapour before revealing a market scene which then fades back into the atmospheric sun setting through the vapour. The second section moves to the story of the Napoleonic War ships in the middle and backgrounds of the painting using percussion. Reflecting this the section centres around the narrative of a naval battle; the manoeuvring into position and flexing of strength; the pre-battle planning; the calm before and finally the battle itself. The third section draws together two aspects: the sun setting and the prison ship, drawing us from the aftermath of the battle to the journey back to shore showing the juxtaposing emotions of the imagined victorious British (the piccolo) and French prisoners (the cello). Closer to shore the vapour descends and we hear inflections of the market before returning to the sun setting through the vapour with the harbour clock (Tubular Bells) grounding us in real time.

An introduction quotes snippets of the tune, followed by stanza one for unison congregation with the brass echoing imitatively. The texture changes in stanza two as the French horn takes the foreground in the accompaniment, with the organ supporting the congregation. The final stanza has the trumpets leaping in baroque-like fanfares at first, then the imitative echoes return. Dignified but joyful, this majestic setting will add to your Easter service.Included Instrumental Parts: Trumpet I and II in C and B-flat, Horn in F, Trombone I and II, Timpani. We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

The func ons of the layers of material in this piece are o en changing roles slowly, allowing something that was a background texture to develop into something featured in the foreground, and vice versa. The transi ons between these roles are o en ambiguous, therefore keen a en on to dynamic balance is necessary to avoid the overall sound from becoming too clu ered or opaque. Balance voices mostly for transparency but allow material with notated accents, staccato marks or tenutos to stand out against the rest. Regarding rhythm, the exact tempo changes during accelerando or ritardando are not as important as a general feeling of surge and release. It is suggested that the 7/8 signature be conducted as one pulse for each bar, except where it is crucial to play rhythms precisely, for example at places of orchestrated crescendo in 8th notes (e.g. bar 136).
