When Stefan Hakenberg and Jocelyn Clark asked me to write a piece for their 2001 Cross Sound concert season in Alaska, I immediately wanted to write a piece with the title, I've Got the Munchies. Music inspired by the visual art is not something new. Mussorgsky composed his infamous Pictures at an Exhibition after viewing a memorial exhibition of paintings and drawings by Victor Alexandrovich Hartmann. Gunther Schuller, my teacher and mentor, composed one of his most memorable orchestral pieces entitled, Six Studies on Themes by Paul Klee. In 1997 I wrote a chamber work inspired by the paintings of Pablo Picasso. The work, Yo Picasso, was scored for Bb clarinet, viola, cello and piano. For the Munchies I used as source material prints and paintings by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The work, scored for violin, viola, bass clarinet and vibraphone, is in six movements: I. For The Scream (1893), I used multiphonics in the bass clarinet to convey the anguish and desperation so clearly depicted in that infamous work. The multiphonics were provided to me by the bass clarinetist, Henri Bok. II. Edvard Munch was very obsessed by his work, Madonna. He made many versions of it between 1893 and 1902. I made three variations of the Madonna movement. III. Tingel-Tangel (1895) is one of his rare prints in which gloom or misery is not the theme. It depicts a stage full of dancing girls. So, I wrote some dance hall music. IV. I wrote a lullaby for The Sick Child (1896). V. The Dance of Life (1899-1900) is a strange picture. The scene is of a party, but no one seems to be happy. I wrote a demented waltz for the scene. VI. The Sun (1909-1916) is one of Munch's last paintings. It shows the rising sun over a peaceful horizon. NB: This is a transposed score. Numbers in the score next to multiphonics refer to those found in Henri Bok's book, New Techniques for the Bass Clarinet. Numbers without asterisks refer to multiphonic fingerings in Table 6; those with asterisks refer to multiphonic tremolos in Table 7.

The piece is in concert F major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato and is in E flat major.A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind.Full score 13 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length. Although it did not win a prize, having entered the competition left me with a neat little piano piece to show for it, as well as the present transcription which I created for flutist Peter Sheridan in 2015. The set of variations opens with the traditional Korean theme accompanied by arpeggios. This is followed by Variation 1, a sad waltz in the style of a Chopin waltz. Next comes Variation 2, a funeral march in the manner of Chopin’s Funeral March from the Piano Sonata in B-flat Minor, Op. 35. Variation 3 is a Tango written in tribute to one of my favorite composers, Astor Piazzolla. Variation 4 combined the Korean tune with motifs from the slow movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, The Pastoral. The set of variations closes with a repeat of the opening passage. -Stanley M. Each movement is based on a famous French Impressionist painting as follows:1. Boulevard Montmarte (Pissarro – 1897) The Boulevard Montmartre is one of the four grand boulevards of Paris. This painting gave me the idea of writing a piece to portray a journey in a pony and trap through this busy street scene, starting out serenely in the suburbs, travelling through all the hustle and bustle, before trailing off into the distance. An all pervasive Poulenc mouvement perpetual accompaniment style is present throughout this movement. 2. Lac d'Annecy (Cézanne - 1896) Although marked Waltz triste (sad waltz), the mood of the music is rather reflective in nature. This movement is the longest of the five and I would not recommend it being played too slow. Stylistically, it is a characteristic accordion piece, so touches of rubato here and there wouldn’t be out of keeping. 3. La Cathédrale de Rouen (Monet - 1894) This is the most difficult movement to play in respect of intonation, with lots of unisons, octaves and parallel intervals. The opening should be a true piano in order to allow the piece grow. The plainsong statements should be played smoothly and with plenty of air. 4. Les Parapluies (Renoir - 1884) A jaunty, playful theme leading in to a little fugue. A little low in places for the euphoniums and baritones. The music should skip along comfortably without rushing to allow the finer detail to come through. 5. Au Moulin Rouge (Toulouse-Lautrec - 1895) A lively tempo, always chasing forward without slackening. As in the previous movement, good dynamic contrast, swells and tight precise articulation. Lots of work for everyone, especially the baritones and euphoniums. Take care that the mf dynamic of the 'bass solo' is not overdone. If needs must, the siren whistle could be substituted with a referee's whistle, but I would like my duck call! The champagne cork 'pops' are really more visual than audible, however, it would be advisable for more of the band to join in, as required. A super work to add to your repertoire as a concert or contest item. This title has already been played by a number of bands in various competitions, and was chosen as the 4th Section Test Piece for the Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band Championships 2015 in Skegness, UK.

Key: B major.Horace Silver had not seen the insides of a recording studio for 750 days before laying down Silver 'n Brass. His previous record, In Pursuit of the 27th Man, was unusual in its instrumentation (vibes) and for including a number of non-Silver tunes. (But the cover of Liberated Brother, from that record, did go on to become the backbone of his late 70s live shows.) So, as a prolific composer, Horace had a large backlog of tunes at his disposal as he entered the studio in January, 1975 and the 6 cuts on Silver 'n Brass are among his best. Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.
