Viola Sonata No.1 “KangKangSullae†For Viola and Piano Sonata No. 1 has the name “KangKangSullaeâ€, and the composer is like any other composer. “What does it mean to be Korean music?†With the question, he is trying to compose such works. A Korean work means a work that contains Korean emotions and spirit, and the melody of “KangKangSullae†has been handed down through a long history to this day, so it can be said that it is a keepsake containing the soul of Korea. With this in mind, the theme of “KangKangSullae†was cited in the 4th movement, and it was named as a representative name for the sonata as an element that forms the basic character of this movement. For reference, the origin of “KangKangSullae†is from women's circular dance. It was because they valued the relationship between each other. They held hands, sang and danced, and it was a representative event to commemorate the full moon and the harvest. The first movement is in 6/8 time, and two contrasting themes, masculine and feminine, appear in normal sonata form. But, in this sonata, two contrasting themes, eastern and western, develop. The second movement crosses the natural harmonics of the violin and the normal playing method in 4/4 time, and expresses oriental excellence and emotion. The third movement is composed in a short ABA form with a humorous lightness and weight in 3/8 time. The fourth movement quoted the theme of “KangKangSullae†in 8/12 time, and was composed in the form of variations that change with various personalities, sometimes solemnly, sometimes sobbing, calmly, etc.

When their brother Phaethon was struck from the chariot of the sun by Zeus, they gathered around his smoky grave on the banks of the River Eridanos and in their unrelenting grief were transformed into poplar-trees and their tears fell into the river and became drops of golden amber. Having originally written a piece representing Phaethon's chaotic charge around the heavens and his destruction by Zeus as a viola solo for my daughter, Penelope, for her second year performance at University, we decided that I should follow the story to it's (rather beautiful) ending with this longer piece for her degree performance. It is a piece which is of professional performance standard, lasting around 11 minutes

Published by Han-Ki Kim (A0.518944). Viola Sonata Sonata No.2 “Ong Hye Ya†The first movement is in 3/4 time, and in normal sonata form, there are two contrasting themes. In this movement, there is a contrast between the oriental and western characteristics. The first theme is oriental and the second theme is characterized by a Western character. The second movement is in 4/4 time, and it is composed in ABA format in which the theme of a slow nature is exchanged between instruments. The third movement is in 3/8 time, and the lively and humorous theme A and the slow B theme are written in ABA format. The 4th movement is in the form of a variation in which the theme of “Ong Heaâ€, the nickname of the sonata seen in 4/4/time, is cited. An exciting conversation continues. The colorful arpeggio and colorful bariolage are used to heighten the musical atmosphere. This theme originated in Kungsangdo province, south Korea. The meanning of “Ong Hye Ya†is the sound of peoples harvesting barleys. Excited reaction word of on old Korean mostly used in traditional folk songs to uplift the hard work of harvesting. David Popper (1843-1913) was a virtuoso cellist and he composed almost exclusively for the cello.  Polonaise de Concert, Op. 14 is one of his most popular and most played showpieces.  It’s a very effective piece which also works very well on the viola, with lots of energetic motives mixed with expressive melodic lines.  It also has ample opportunity to showcase the performer’s technical command, but nothing unsurmountable.  This transcription fully preserves the original flavour of the Polonaise but at the same time maintains the characteristic voice of the viola.  The viola part is fully annotated with bowings and fingerings which are practical and efficient, with consideration of keeping all the idiomatic features that are particular to the cello.

Eight scenes depicting Hellenic History from 6th century B.C., or even earlier, up to our days, based on fragments of ancient Greek music, folk and byzantine tradition and rebetiko song tunes as well. From Greece of the distand past, to Greece of the present and, maybe, to Greece of the years to come, Hellas of the Future. The work is dedicated to the Greek Composer Giannis Konstantinidis. It has been performed by Andrea Hemmenway and Konstantinos Papadakis in Fall Arts Concert organised by Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia in The Ethical Society Hall of Philadelphia in 2010. The same artists perfomed the work at Kendal Concert Hall in Kendal, Pennsylvania in 2011. Version for violin and piano available. It was revised and reformatted in 2017 to include an alternate part (clarinet) to the oboe part. The clarinet part takes advantage of its lower range and is not an exact transcription of the original oboe part. The work is in 3 movements, approx. 13 minutes duration. Advanced difficulty. The sample excerpt features a small part of the 3rd movement (oboe version).
