Tchaikovsky: Dance of the Flutes from Nutcracker Suite for Flute & Piano

Flute,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549794 Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3538993. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549794). Duration: ca. 2:10. Score: 9 pages. 77 measures in 2/4. Solo part: 2 pages, Piano part: 4 pages. A favorite Christmas selection from the Nutcracker Suite. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most memorable melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five indeed rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet suite became even more famous in the 1960s. It is now performed all over the world, particularly during the Christmas season.

Flute - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christmas, Recital. Piano Reduction, Set of Parts. 21 pages. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications
Here are three refreshing new modernarrangements of three popular traditional carols “like you ain’t never heardthem before”. Intended for the intermediate flute player (or players) and areasonably competent pianist, they are sure to brighten up your Christmasevents whether at home, school, church or recital hall. You can of course use the music with any number of flute players. The pieces could be usedduring a Christmas service or as stand-alone pieces at an end-of-termpresentation. The audio sample includes recordings of all three pieces.

The King Rides Out(based on “Good King Wenceslas”) starts conventionally enough but turns into acountry-style song and then there’s a three-part Bach-like contrapuntal section, concluding with a wistful coda before the music returns to the joyful countrystyle. Waltz with Holly – or Possibly Ivy (based of course on “The Hollyand the Ivy”) turns into a dreamy waltz with long extended phrases and a goodvehicle to show the flute player’s tone quality. The Merry Gentleman goLatin is a lively rumba version of “God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen”.

ColinKirkpatrick studied composition, cello and piano at London’s prestigious RoyalCollege of Music and after graduation followed a career in music education. Hewas a High School Music Director in London for about fifteen years and laterbecame a Music Education Adviser for local government, with the addedresponsibility for training teachers and directing the instrumental teaching service.

Hehas been published by Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, OxfordUniversity Press, Chester, Belwin Mills and Intrada (Netherlands). He holds MAand PhD degrees in education and his other interests include reading, photography, travel, cooking and wine tasting - though not necessarily all atthe same time.

Flute,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.551503 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Halloween,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 62 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306331. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551503). 1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Flute,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548707 Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Easter,Instructional,Standards. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3411715. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548707). Out of the Depths I Cry to You by Martin Luther arranged for alto flute & piano. The first verses feature modified counterpoint and harmony proceeding at quarter = 82. The final verse is reharmonized for maximum dramatic effect at a more contemplative tempo such as quarter = 64. Very powerful selection for Lent or Easter. Duration (3 verses) 3:05, 36 ms.Score: 3 pg. Solo part: 1 pg. The piano reads from the score. Out of the Depths Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From deep affliction I cry out to you), is, of course, a hymn composed by Martin Luther. Moreover, Luther also wrote the lyrics, essentially a paraphrase of Psalm 130. First published in 1524, it is also one of eight songs in the original Lutheran hymnal. It appears likewise in many hymnals and in different translations. The lyrics furthermore stimulated compositions from the Renaissance to the contemporary. Consequently, composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach built an entire chorale cantata on it. Other composers similarly contributed pieces, such as Felix Mendelssohn and Max Reger. Luther Background Martin Luther, (1483 –1546) was a German professor of theology, composer, priest, and moreover, an influential character in the Protestant Reformation. Luther had a momentous impact on church and society due to his contributions to the musical arts. He wanted to disseminate the gospel among mankind and with this intention thought that the best way to do that was through music. Influence It is important to realize that other musicians, and their descendants, were encouraged by Luther’s songs and wrote their own hymns. Luther, to be sure, had a thorough musical education. For example, he knew secular and sacred songs from an early age. He, in particular, played the lute well and sang in the monastery when he was a monk. That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

Flute,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767321 Composed by Mike Lyons. Concert,Contemporary. Score and part. 23 pages. Lyons Music Services #3473849. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767321). A brand new solo for flute and piano. There's a little bit of horseplay between the flute and piano, the flautist needs to be able to double tongue and to use flutter tongue. There's a bit of a simple cadenza to start, followed by some interplay between the flute and piano pretending to tune. Then follows a march-like section with some deliberate discords in the flute. As this section becomes louder and more animated, the players should act cross with each other! Then follows a dreamy little melodic section in waltz time. There's lots of chromatic work in this section. The piano now dominates for a short while with a melodic idea, based on the flute's waltz melody bot with tremolos which gives the music an almost zither-like feel (expect the Third man to walk on stage. After this, the flute returns to dominance but gets interrupted by the piano who is missing being in the limelight! At the change to a quicker tempo and a major key - still with 'out of tune notes' the two 'play nicely together' for a while before it all goes to pot again when the flute develops hiccups! This leads back to an altered version of the original march tune, but faster. This time the two find common ground on the 8ve leaps and the piece finishes with a short codetta. A great show-off piece for the finale of a concert, allowing both the soloist and accompanist to sparkle.

Frolic in the Surfhttp://www.phyllislouke.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/3.-Reflections-of-Water-mvmt-3.mp3 This piece was written in memory of my father. So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves. Scored for flute and piano. 5:00 Level 3 Phyllis Avidan Louke (b. 1954), a flutist, teacher, and award-winning composer, living in Portland, Oregon, has been arranging and composing since 1990, with over 70 pieces published. Bach-Gounod: Ave Maria, Schwencke version for Alto Flute & Piano

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550917 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888281. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550917). This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer. Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined.

Flute,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550916 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888273. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550916). Carolyn Kelley #1045476. Published by Carolyn Kelley (A0.1466915). The texts and tunes of Martin Luther's hymns have a timeless quality, and Lutherans of every age know these hymns well. The arranger has collected 6 well known hymns written by Martin Luther and arranged them for advanced flute and piano. Musicians will find parts that will demand strengths in every register, expect technical fluidity, and musical expression, particularly for the flutist. The arrangements are designed for a professional flutist, or an advanced college student. Even the most skilled flutist should be able to praise their Lord with their skills that were given to them, rather than being forced to play arrangements far below their best first fruits. This collection includes: Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice (NUN FREUT EUCH, LIEBEN CHRISTEN); From Heaven Above to Earth I Come (VOM HIMMEL HOCH); Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word (ERHALT UNS, HERR); A Mighty Fortress (EIN FESTE BURG); Our Father, Who from Heaven Above (VATER UNSER IM HIMMELREICH, DER DU); and Savior of the Nations, Come (NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND).

Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 12

Instrumental Duet Flute,Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1021619 Composed by Tyler J. Holt. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 43 pages. TJHoltMusic #6134009. Published by TJHoltMusic (A0.1021619). Sonata for Flute and Piano, Op. 12 was written for and is dedicated to my friend, Natalie Smith. This sonata conveys different moods using various styles in each of the movements, all of which take some liberty and, at times, are vague with form. The first movement, inspired by Claude Debussy, uses a quasi mirror form, with the two motives connecting with a sudden yet seamless tempo change, which is supported by the driving rhythm in the piano, and a development in the middle of the movement. The second movement is a funeral march and is based on the chord progression built around the sustained B natural in the flute, which conveys a dreamlike atmosphere. As the progression transforms, there is an increasing sense of dread that unfolds until this feeling becomes primal before collapsing in on itself at the climax of the movement. From there, the progression returns more actively with, although not as strong as before, a sense of dread still present for the remainder of the movement. The movement is in ternary form (ABA), with a development in the first A section. The third movement is a more clearly defined rondo form and is based on themes that undergo subtle changes each time they return. Other themes include a recurring call and response between the treble and bass lines in the piano, which the flute participates in this exchange when it is presented again later, a reference to the second movement's progression, and a modal theme that floats in terms of harmonic and melodic structure. When the initial theme returns for the final time, a coda restates previous ideas as the finale gradually increases its tempo and concludes the piece. This movement is the most technically challenging, especially considering that I asked Natalie how fast she can double tongue. In general, there are a fair amount of high passages and big leaps. This was written with Natalie's skill set in mind.I. Moderato con gioiaII. Lamento sostenutoIII. ScherzoComposed by Tyler J. HoltPublished by TJHoltMusicCopyright © Tyler J. Holt, Composer.

Flute,Piano - Digital Download SKU: A0.1316354 By Iva Ugrcic, flute and Satoko Hayami, piano. By Mary Ellen Haupert. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical. Score and part. 3 pages. Mary Ellen Haupert #905095. Published by Mary Ellen Haupert (A0.1316354). “Breeze†for Flute and Piano (2023) by Mary Ellen Haupert (b.1960)“Breeze†was written for flutist Iva UgrÄić and pianist Satoko Hayami for the Out of Our Minds Chamber Music performance of music by women composers on November 4, 2023. The work was inspired by the sounds of lapping water, loon calls, and wind carried off the shores of Minnesota’s Lake Pokegama, where our family has a summer cabin. Loons are social migratory birds that communicate with each other via wails (calls to one another), tremolos (warnings to others about impending danger), yodels (territorial demonstrations), and coo-ing (quiet contentment). The opening of “Breeze†is a yodel in D Major that dissolves into a lapping piano accompaniment – the backdrop for a measured loon soliloquy. The piano restates the loon tune with the flute echoing in canon. The loon echoes dissipate in an undulating transition to a B section featuring the traditional Irish tune, St. Columba, first published by George Petrie in 1855. The tune is presented in D Mixolydian over a repeated bass line that is meant to evoke the rhythmic paddling of a canoe. As the tune ends, the “loons†pick up their own improvisation over the bass line, again in canon. There are only slight alterations in the closing section, casting “Breeze†in a balanced ABA’ form.

Flute and orchestra - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q25027 For flute and orchestral groups. Composed by Joerg Widmann. This edition: piano reduction with solo part. Il Flauto traverso. Downloadable, Piano reduction with solo part. Duration 22 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q25027. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q25027). This ‚Suite’ is not one of my ‘epic’ instrumental concertos such as the concertos for cello, violin or oboe, but a substantially smaller-structured series of dance forms arranged into a suite. Sunken worlds suddenly emerge here, only to reach the surface, hover in dangerously distorted fashion and then sink back to the bottom. Almost every individual movement allots the solo flute a specific tonal colouring and an instrumental group from the orchestra: in the opening Allemande, the flutes of the orchestra (including alto and bass flute and later also piccolo to include the entire flute family); the string section in the Sarabande; in both chorales (extremely muted in the first and brutalist in the second), the brass etc.; and it is only in the concluding Badinerie that all orchestral groups are combined, although they are terraced in the Baroque style, one following another, seldom all playing simultaneously. This permits the flute to remain the provider of all impulses; it attaches itself to the wide variety of instrumental colours, becomes suffused with these colours and thereby shines in different lights – acerbic, pale and radiant. This first performance marks the conclusion of my two-year residence with the Cleveland Orchestra. The immense versatility of this fine body of sound (which is indeed treated as such with the sum of its parts) and the exciting dark timbre of its principal flautist Joshua Smith have to a great extent determined the form and tonal character of my Flûte en suite.
