Mysterious Journey, under another title, won the National School Orchestra Association composition contest in the 1960's. The composer put it aside because it had almost no percussion and was thinly scored. In 2021 he revised it by adding many percussion instruments as well as rescoring much of the music.

This is a complete orchestral arrangement that begins with classical guitar, and develops melodically, and harmonically through every mysterious twist and turn. The main theme is stated following the guitar, vocals, and strings introduction. A secondary theme is played with lighter instrumentation, using the combination of harp, oboe, and cello. This melody is then developed using theme and variations. The main theme is later reinstated as the instrumentation becomes more intense. Ahaunting french horn solo is followed by a dramatic trek utilising the whole orchestra to the end where the horn to round the piece off.Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' the history of which can be found here: https://www.britainexpress.co.uk/attr... Part 1 (0 - 2:24) It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery. Part 2 (2:26 -3:37) It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme. Part 3 (3:37 - 6:02) The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train (4:30) where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights (4:55). The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. (5:02) No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination. Part 4 (6:03 - 8:12) The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters (6:30). As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face (8:01) as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

This tone poem is split into two movements: Sunrise and Sunset. “Horizons aims to reveal what a sunrise and a sunset on the horizon would sound like in Atlantic Canada. In essence “Horizons†aims to create that picture in the listener mind through music. Horizons is a tone poem that seeks to encapsulate the breathtaking nature found in Atlantic Canada. Drawing its inspiration from the lush Acadian forest,  majestic Fundy National Park, and the diverse geographical landscapes that define Atlantic Canada, this piece vividly translates the essence of these natural wonders into sound. The composition is divided into two movements, Sunrise and Sunset, each crafted to convey the unique ambiance and colors of the Atlantic horizon at these times of the day.In Horizons, orchestral textures are pivotal in painting the auditory landscape. The intricate layering of instrumental timbres and dynamics is akin to the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape. The delicate whispers of the woodwinds evoke the gentle rustle of leaves in the Acadian forest at dawn, while the bold, resonant brass mirrors the dramatic hues that streak the sky at dusk. Strings weave throughout, like the constant ebb and flow of the tides at Fundy Bay. Through Horizons, listeners are invited to embark on an auditory journey that mirrors the experience of witnessing a sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic horizon. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1118521). Walking in the Air is a song written by Howard Blake for the 1982 animated film The Snowman based on Raymond Briggs' 1978 children's book of the same name. The song forms the centrepiece of The Snowman, which has become a seasonal favourite on British and Finnish television. The story relates the fleeting adventures of a young boy and a snowman who has come to life. In the second part of the story, the boy and the snowman fly to the North Pole. Walking in the Air is the theme for the journey. They attend a party of snowmen, at which the boy seems to be the only human until they meet Father Christmas with his reindeer, and the boy is given a scarf with a snowman pattern. In the film, the song was performed by St Paul's Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty, and reissued in 1985 (on Stiff Records) and 1987. In 1985, an altered version was recorded for use in a TV advertising campaign for Toys R Us. As Auty's voice had then broken, Blake recommended the then-14-year-old Welsh chorister Aled Jones, whose recording reached number five in the UK Singles Chart, and who became a popular celebrity on the strength of his performance. The association of the song with Jones, combined with Auty not being credited on The Snowman, led to a common misbelief that Jones performed the song in the film. Walking in the Air has subsequently been performed by over forty artists, in a variety of styles. In a UK poll in 2012, the Aled Jones version was voted 13th on the ITV television special The Nation's Favourite Christmas Song.

Nocturne for Orchestra began as a piece that would celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Galileo’s telescope while using a musical language that would be in keeping with a program of American music. I thought that The Unanswered Question by Ives, and the emotional depth and poignancy of much of Copland’s music, would be a perfect compliment to a tribute to Galileo. But then two friends passed away and the piece turned into a tribute to them, with the night sky and the Unanswered Questions that surround us creating a consoling environment for this effort. The songlike themes of Nocturne grow out of my journey from mourning the premature deaths of my friends to celebrating their rich and vibrant lives. Section A is the dreamlike introductory section, B is a transition to the song-like section, and C is where the songlike themes are stated outright. D is a development section, E is an interruption - returning to the dreamlike music, F merges the dream music with the thematic material, G is the expressive high point of the piece and is articulated by the violin and cello solos. The remaining sections are intended to convey freedom and celebration. This is followed by a brief coda.
