My world was my house and walled garden; each spot a potential for inspiration, sparking ideas for songs to while away the months of waiting. California Rose is a playful portrait of one of my favorite flowers. A group of pine trees created a Wooded Dell, a song exploring the timelessness of romance. An Asian lantern inspired Garden Teahouse, a story told through Haiku. February 2021 links the hope of the early California springtime with the poignant optimism inspired by the availability of the first COVID vaccines.

Originally inspired by a police brutality incident witnessed by Renaldo Obie Benson, the song was composed by Benson, Al Cleveland, and Gaye and produced by Gaye himself. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! Skylark is an American popular song with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Hoagy Carmichael, published in 1941. Several artists recorded charting versions of the song in 1942, including the Glenn Miller Orchestra (vocal by Ray Eberle), Harry James and His Orchestra (vocal by Helen Forrest), Dinah Shore, and Bing Crosby. The Glenn Miller recording on RCA Bluebird peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard pop singles chart. This song is considered a jazz standard. Additionally, it is believed to have inspired a long-running Buick car of the same name that was produced from 1953 to 1998. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! It's a fun song and not too hard to play!
