My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. German.Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) began composing at a very early age, initially receiving great support from Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann and subsequently from Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Even his Lieder op. 1 already display a clear formal structure, the concentration of tonal material within a limited space and rhythmic variability. I have selected six lieder based on poems by Heinrich Heine originating from different periods of Kirchnerâ€™s life and interleaved them between seven bagatelles which make selective references to the previous or next lied, sometimes as a single note, a chord or a gesture. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's ....... The entire pre-recorded media comes from an individual, we will call The Orange Oaf, who often rambles incoherently due to a constant stream of thoughts needing to immediately escape his mouth, causing many nonsensical tangents and interjections into his speech as though one individual were occupying eight seats and having a solo round table discussion. The composer of The Death of a Nation edited a speech so that the 'on script Orange Oaf' had his overarching speech while the interjections and tangents were channeled through several other speakers and The Orange Oaf could indeed speak the way he apparently thinks.

Supreme was one of Robbie Williams' hits in year 2000 from the album Sing When Youâ€™re Winning on the label Chrysalis Records. It is possible that it took less time to put this song together than the legal teams needed to negotiate the distribution of royalties because it contains two interpolations, or re-recorded samples from other works. The more familiar of these is the bridge, interpolated from I Will Survive (by Dino Fekaris, Frederick Perren) first sung by Gloria Gaynor. The other is the main string riff, which is interpolated from music to the 1970 French-Italian film Dernier domicile connu (Last Known Address) composed by FranÃ§ois de Roubaix. The rap section after the bridge is replaced with an excerpt from this. Otherwise, this arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Enjoy!
