(Leonard Koren in Wabi- Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers.) The aesthetic and metaphysical ideals that Japanese wabi-sabi encapsulates include simplicity, naturalness, and an acceptance of reality. This musical work seeks to illustrate the overall nature of wabi-sabi. At both the beginning of movement 1 and the ending of movement 3, notes are thought of as specks of Potentiality that are randomly evolving from or devolving to Nothingness. Movement 2, at the center point of this universal journey, expresses a concerted effort of diverse elements to create structure and meaning. Ideally, every single performance (formal or informal) should be different from the last and contain various elements of surprise to even the performers. It is the composer’s hope that musicians will enjoy the challenge, the individual freedom, and unexpected moments ready to be discovered again and again in Wabi-Sabi, for string quartet.

My quartets composed between 1997 and 2005 were conceived as an interconnected, self-contained cycle of works ranging from the (in my opinion) quasi revolutionary Quartet No. 1 to the Quartet No. 5 entitled Versuch über die Fuge [Attempt at a Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6 – Study on Beethoven – composed fourteen years after No. 5 should be conceived as a new approach and the commencement of a new quartet cycle with an unknown ending. All that can be said is that the subsequent quartets will be devoted to an intense study of Ludwig van Beethoven’s unique and consummate artistry of quartet composition. Despite a reverence for Beethoven at a very early stage, my own compositions have steered well clear of this unapproachable cosmos with the exception of my concert overture Con brio. The perhaps only link with the five quartets of the first cycle of quartets is the single-movement structure of the thirty-minute Quartet No. 6. The fundamental coordinates have otherwise been reset to zero. This is therefore also a ‘study’ in a literal sense. In the Quartet No. 6, I set out with a state of tonality displaying significant extensions whose centrifugal forces are barely containable. My focus is the detection of the inherent gravitation of tonality, including phenomenons such as tension/relaxation, suspension/resolution and fixation/deviation. From a formal aspect, the work is too experimental and unsentimental for explorations in a nostalgic-romantic sense. On the contrary, tonality or at least its fundamental assumptions are initially set down in the sense of a study or test assembly in order to permit subsequent experimentation, variation and the formulation of exceptions with the desire and firm conviction that it is possible to express something innovative and never previously heard with this seemingly exhausted fundamental material. I have been repeatedly astonished by the unfolding in the progression of this piece which has taken me to unknown locations, especially from a formal aspect. I am fascinated to see what forms the subsequent quartets in this ‘Beethoven study’ cycle will lead me to. The Quartet No. 6 has been created in close artistic and friendly cooperation with Anne-Sophie Mutter and she is the dedicatee of this work. Original limericks: (Introductory words: pitter patter pom etc) Our conductor was trying to train our choir to sing in the rain the music got wet and to our great regret we finally had to refrain So all of us went back indoors and we sang from our poor dripping scores but the audience cheered as we persevered and demanded sev'ral encores It was then that we all started sneezing the basses were coughing and wheezing The altos in harm'ny sniffed not very calmly but the audience thought we were teasing The Sopranos then noticed their dresses were shrinking and causing distresses the buttons they popped and the tenors they hopped as those buttons shot right past their faces It seemed that the choir was dissolving and the room started slowly revolving we'd all caught a cough it near carried us off as the fever we'd got was evolving We finally reached the last ditty in that chilly and rain sodden city oh we're told that in Spain it just rains on the plain but here it soaks both plain and pretty Performed by Violin 1: Csongor Veér Violin 2: Anna Fehér Viola: Péter Kondor Cello: Mátyás Ölveti of Budapest Scoring.

German.Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) began composing at a very early age, initially receiving great support from Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann and subsequently from Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Even his Lieder op. 1 already display a clear formal structure, the concentration of tonal material within a limited space and rhythmic variability. I have selected six lieder based on poems by Heinrich Heine originating from different periods of Kirchner’s life and interleaved them between seven bagatelles which make selective references to the previous or next lied, sometimes as a single note, a chord or a gesture. The Sieben Bagatellen can additionally be performed separately, independently of the complete cycle. (Aribert Reimann).
