This is the third movement from Shavano Suite, a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales of the Maysville/Mount Shavano area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet, but this version is expanded for classical guitar, string quartet and percussion. The percussion requires drum (or timpani), glockenspiel, guiro and wind chimes. Performance time for the suite is 17 minutes. This movement, however, can stand alone as a concert piece, with a performance time of 3 minutes. Performance demand is advanced intermediate level. Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

She was known as the protector of forests, and a patron of knowledge, creativity, passion, sex, and fertility of both plants and animals. She is often portrayed as a beautiful, red-headed, slender woman with elven features, draped in forest-green robes. As the protector of forests, she was also guardian of forest spirits and sprites. These spirits are said to inhabit trees, a belief that spans across many cultures, like the Kodoma in Japanese folklore. Druantia’s Dance, a pizzicato string orchestra piece, depicts a joyous ritual of Druantia and her forest spirits; they scurry through the forest, dancing together, while creating new life and blessing the plants and animals around them, aiding in their growth.

Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986) James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently. Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places. 1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail. 2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard. 3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise. 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day. 5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss. 6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss. 7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared. 8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But... 9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all. Program notes: Mark Ludwig came to me in the spring of 1997 wondering if I would be interested in writing a piece of music for the Hawthorne String Quartet that would bring to the attention of the world what many Tibetans are experiencing as exiles or political prisoners under the rule of the Peoples Republic of China. I told him I would be. So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II. Invocation Simple Song of Fun/Om ma ni pad me hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) (Om ah hum hum. Om ah kham hum. Om ah om hum. Om ah sva hum. Om ah ah hum. Om ah ha hum. Om ah lam hum.
