BUMBLE BOOGIE CONCERTO Advanced Piano Solo by Robert Van Horne Adapted from Grieg's A MINOR PIANO CONCERTO & Rimsky-Korsakov's FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE. 9 Pages Approx. Time: 2:30 A kindly old gentleman who attended my concerts would always request BUMBLE BOOGIE. To honor his request, I decided to create my own arrangement using two Classical music favorites. As a piano entertainer, Liberace was known for taking Classical music and popularizing it. So in the style of Liberace, I took Grieg's A MINOR PIANO CONCERTO and Rimsky-Korakov's FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE, added a twist of left hand Boogie Woogie and created the BUMBLE BOOGIE CONCERTO. This arrangement is clearly notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, pedal indications, and appropriate musical terms for playing. The left hand incorporates a Boogie Woogie style ostinato while the right hand plays the main themes of the famous Grieg Concerto and Flight Of The Bumble Bee. I added my own musical transitions to create a flamboyant sound of suspenseful tremolandos and showy runs, concluding with two flashy glissandos. This is a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals. He was a Navy boxing champion, played for nine U.S. Presidential administrations, and had a gold Steinway & Sons grand piano model named in his honor.

The composer writes: When the word “corona” entered daily use in the year 2020, I recalled the Motetti de la Corona: a book of popular motets published by Ottaviano Petrucci, in 1514. The volume contained part-songs with sacred texts in Latin, written by the leading composers of the day, including Josquin, Mouton, De Févin and others. The publication was popular, and Petrucci went on to publish another four books of motets under the same name.Three of my own Motetti de la Corona are settings of texts excerpted from Petrucci’s publication: “Ecce Maria,” “Christum ducem” and “Sancta Trinitas.” The “Ave Maria” draws on the Book of St. Luke for its text. And “De profundis” (Psalm 129 or 130, depending on the numbering system used) has been set to music by many composers, from Josquin to Pärt. Its cry for help seemed an appropriate response to a time of global pandemic.

Great for performances and rewarding to play.

Green Eyes is a a popular song, orginally written in Spanish under the title Aquellos Ojos Verdes (Those Green Eyes) by Adolfo Utrera and Nilo Menendez in 1929. The English translation waa made by Eddie Rivera and Eddie Woods in 1931. The song, a bolero, was written in 1929 and recorded in Cuba in the same year. It was the only major hit, both originally in Cuba and then again in the Latin community in New York for the Cuban pianist, Nilo Menendez. The lyrics were written by Cuban tenor, Adolfo Utrera. This arrangement for Niibori Guitar Orchestra is inspired by the rendition by popular Latin group Los Panchos. It is intricately scored for 3 Alto parts, 2 prime parts, bass, contrabass and guitarons. The Alto 3 part can be played by an Alto cembalo, giving a distinctive ponticello sound that would then nicely contrast the nylon string quality of Alto 1 and 2.

Originally written for large orchestra, Cuban Overture is a tone poem composed in 1932, inspired by a two-week holiday which Gershwin spent in Havana in the February of that year. It was originally called ‘Rumba’, but the title was later changed to better describe the character and colour of the music.  Caribbean rhythms and Cuban percussion instruments predominate, and Gershwin was keen that the bongo, claves and maracas should be visible and prominent (position them right at the front so all the audience can see - they'll love that!) The main theme was influenced by ‘Échale Salsita’, a popular song of the day, by Ignacio Piñeiro. The premiere was a great success, and the piece has remained a popular part of Gershwin’s oeuvre. Transcribed for symphonic band, with supporting contrabass instruments and European parts.
