There is a theory that El grillo refers to Carlo Frillo, a singer who worked for the same patron as Josquin, Cardinal Galeazzo Sforza, and that it was intended to remind the prelate that his musicians’ salaries were overdue. The Sforzas were apparently notoriously mean to their employees, in spite of (or possibly because of) the fact that one of them was happy to pay a large sum of money for a parrot that could recite the Creed. Certainly the words of this little piece, with their reference to the cricket who sings for love, seem to have a good deal more impact in this sardonic light. Although the piece is similar in form to many other frottole, it is really quite unlike most such works, especially the way the repeated notes are used for comic effect.  In this instrumental arrangement I have add several decorations and divisions, to illustrate the words behind it, and also just for fun.El grillo è buon cantoreche tiene lungo verso.Dalle beve grillo canta.Ma non fa come gli altri uccelli,come li han cantato un pocovan' de fatto in altro loco,  sempre el grillo sta pur saldoQuando la maggior è l' caldoalhor canta sol per amore.[suggested English paraphrase]The cricket is a good singerand he sings for a long timeGive him a drink so he can go on singingBut he doesn't do what the other birds doWho after singing a littleJust go elsewhere.  The cricket is always steadfastWhen the weather is hottest,   then he sings just for lovePerformed by The Budapest Scoring Clarinet Ensemble.

The piece was premiered in Paris in 1888, and underwent several revisions in subsequent years. The Requiem was performed at Fauré’s own funeral in 1924, but it’s only in recent years that this gentle version of the Mass for the Dead has received the international recognition it deserves. Contemporary performances in Parisian churches required the Pie Jesus to be sung by a boy treble, but in the concert hall, Fauré always preferred a soprano voice for the part.This arrangement transcribes the orchestral score as a Solo for Clarinet with Piano accompaniment. Both the piano score and the solo part are included in the pdf file.Soloists at an early intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing. The slow tempo though will require good breath and tone control. The piano part is suitable for an intermediate player. Tango d’Elinora is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola.This duet is written in the style of early twentieth century Tango music. Tango first appeared as in the late nineteenth century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but it wasn’t long before the dance craze spread to North America and Europe. Performers like Carlos Gardel were the international superstars of their day. More recently the Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla and others has pushed the boundaries and ensured that Tango is still a vibrant art form today. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated with the first beat in the bar always strong; the melody should always flow and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Harry Burleigh was an African American composer who often used Southern spiritual music as the influence for his compositions. He studied with Dvorak in New York, and is primarily known for he transcription of slave songs into classical forms. This arrangement of Southland Sketches is the 3rd mvt of his work for violin and piano written in 1916. It features two main sections, and the work is about three and a half minutes. This piece is suitable for mature musicians for programming and can also be performed by younger players. Every instrument gets a share of the melodies, including bass clarinet. While not a technically difficult work (nothing above a high C), playing with the correct inflections, blend, and tone is critical to a great performance. This work is always a crowd pleaser, and is a wonderful gateway into the compositions of a relatively unknown American composer. Wonderful for Patriotic concerts, recitals, retirement homes, and Black History Month.
