Taking into account the date of publication (1897) these seem to be the first printed organ compositions of Naujalis. They were published in Warsaw, in the collection Preludia na organy, part 2, series III. The publication soon received positive comments in the Polish newspaper of the St. Cecilia Society, Musica sacra (1898 No. 5). There are many signs that Naujalis used this edition as his favourite teaching manual since the fingerings and pedaling given are from the author himself.Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929.A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.

Fourteen pieces for organ, dedicated to a “beloved friend, Fr. Teodoras Brazys,†presents the largest collection of works for this instrument in Naujalis’ oeuvre. Like Naujalis, Brazys was the graduate of the Church Music School in Regensburg. These fourteen preludes for organ appear to be written in expression of deep affinity and gratitude to a like-minded friend who shared similar values. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). This processional was made for editing, complete with two episodes that either may be used. Used last part for my wedding, the whole composition is 5:25 so it's also long enough for the largest of churches. I've also used it for Palm Sunday prelude and postlude. This composition won the 1992 American Guild of Organists, Spokane chapter competition for original organ music.

Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981222). What Would Nina Simone Say? For Soprano Sax and Organ (9'50)Program NotesI became interested in Nina Simone in the spring of 2018. She was born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, my own hometown. I knew little about her while I was growing up. Later I heard she was an activist and the sentiment around town I observed was that there was far from a feeling of pride about who Nina Simone was. If that really was the case (and I have no proof of it) there was a dramatic change with the creation of The Nina Simone Project in 2006. I was still ignorant of this, having lived in Arizona for most of my adult life. But researching Simone led me to an immense feeling of pride for my hometown when I read about the support she had from the white community in the 1940’s. Without that encouragement and financial support, as well as artistic support from a local piano teacher, Muriel Mazzanovich, Mrs. Mazzy, as she was called and who Nina treasured and respected all of her life, Nina Simone would never have reached the world with her unique prodigious musical talent. She was a diva by all counts and her original compositions reflect a balance of words with music that is far superior to what her contemporaries were creating. A bronze sculpture of her by Zenos Frudakis now stands on Main Street in Tryon. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? Simone asked in an interview. That to me is the definition of an artist. The feminist writer Germaine Greer declared Every generation has to discover Nina Simone. She is evidence that female genius is real. What would Nina Simone say today? I think she’d be mad as hell and screaming about revolution, probably still advocating for the use of violence. I’ve used some of Simone’s energetic and compelling motives in this composition. It is my own tribute to her genius and to how she gave to the world so much even though she was plagued with agonizing physical and mental ailments. That suffering seems to me an undercurrent in each video I have watched of her concerts. What I would give to have been in her presence for one of those concerts! She embodied music as an art form, revering her musical teachers, Bach, especially. That she never achieved her main goal of becoming the first female African-American classical pianist of world stature is perhaps not so sad when you think of how many more people she moved with her talent expressed in jazz and folk popular idioms. But she was prone to violence and many people, even those closest to her, were often fearful of her rage. She was misunderstood for so many years and it was only in the last two decades of her life that her moods were somewhat controlled through use of prescription drugs. The musical life that began for Eunice Waymon when she was seven years old playing the piano and organ for services at St. Luke’s C.M.E. Church (where her mother was the preacher) in Tryon, N.C. traversed many cities in many countries. She died at the age of 70 in 2003 in Carry-le-Rouet, France.

About the Sonata Hymnica Series Program Note Composer James Siddons draws on the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies. These sonatas for piano solo explore these deeper meanings in a variety of contemporary musical influences, while keeping in mind the acoustics of small rural churches of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and walls, high ceilings, and dimensions determined by local builders who knew how to shape a room for excellent acoustics in an age of no electricity and no microphones. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, sometimes whispering---as a sacred harp. Although these sonatas have no specific titles, the first sonata may be thought of as the Prayer Sonata, the second as the Travel Sonata, as in a spiritual journey, and the third sonata is about our greatest fear, that of being alone and without God. Sonata Hymnica No. 3 draws on two melodies from the African-American experience. One, Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)? was first published in 1899 in W. E. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns but existed earlier as a folk hymn. It became the first spiritual to be included in a major hymnal, The Hymnal 1940 of the Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child was sung by the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University from 1870 on, and was published in the Rev. Dr. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns in 1899. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Musical effects characteristic of the piano and descriptive of the memory in American culture are the substances of these piano solos. Touch is important: in many places, several dynamics are called for on the same beat. Duration --- . Sonata Hymnica No. 3 --- 9 minutes. An arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a very early wind quintet written by Edward Elgar while still based in Worcester in 1878-9, entitled Harmony Music No.1, after the German Harmoniemusik, meaning music for wind instruments. His quintet group (in which he played the bassoon) consisted of two flutes, an oboe, a clarinet and a bassoon, which by modern standards is rather unusual (omitting the usual French horn). He agreed to write a quintet for the group once a week, and he claimed to have written most of them during the 25-minute sermons at St. George's R.C. Church, where he had taken over the organ-playing from his father (and where the arranger ministered for three years in the 1990s!) It is a wonderful, cheerful, tuneful short piece (4-5 minutes long), but the original version is rarely performed, perhaps because of its difficulty on several fronts. First it is very fast, challenging performers' ability to tongue rapidly. Secondly, it repeatedly leaves no time to breathe, especially for the flautists (meaning that it has to be performed even faster, in order to get through it.) Thirdly, Elgar's oboist must have been extremely versatile, as its part is very low indeed in places (several low B's played pp at speed.) Finally, published copies seem to have rather a lot of editorial errors... This arrangement was therefore created in the hope that the piece might become more accessible and be more frequently performed. Although the bassoon part remains Elgar's, the other four players are used imaginatively to overcome many of the difficulties of the original. For example, the original low oboe parts are here played by one of the clarinets instead, and the severe breathing problems are solved by sharing repeated quavers between the four higher instruments.

He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works.
