String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.766986 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Bob Delfausse. Concert,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 101 pages. Robert Delfausse #5324223. Published by Robert Delfausse (A0.766986). Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words is collection of short piano pieces. I chose four of these that seemed orchestral In character, and arranged them for chamber orchestra (strings, piano, and seven winds). While arranging is often an exercise in reducing music originally written for a large ensemble, the challenge here was to expand Mendelssohn's piano miniatures into music for a chamber orchestra that sounds as it were written specifically for that ensemble. Level: advanced intermediate. Duration: 8 minutes, 50 seconds.

Score and parts. 32 pages. Gordon Cherry #4988197. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792474). Mendelssohn wrote eight volumes containing six Lieder known collectively as Songs Without Words for the Piano. The idea of writing lyrical works for the instrument became popular in the Romantic era. Tarantella is a quick Italian style dance in triple meter, 3. Faith is romantic and flowing with emotion and 4. The Joyous Peasant is a lively perfect closer. This suite is appropriate for advanced performers and Kim Ohlemeyer's arrangement is a joy to perform.

Four Songs by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn
String Quartet: 2 violins, viola, cello

(+)
String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1403057 Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805-1847). Arranged by Stephen Levintow. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 29 pages. Cypress Publishing #986241. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1403057). The Lieder for voice and piano by Felix Mendelssohn, while of high quality, have mostly been overshadowed by those of his contemporary and friend Robert Schumann. But his Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) for piano solo with no vocal text, were and remain immensely popular, and had a great influence on his fellow composers, creating a genre of short poetic pieces for piano accessible to skilled amateurs and students as well as professionals. This set of four arrangements for string quartet begins with the best known and most loved of his vocal songs, Auf Flügeln des Gesanges (On Wings of Song), a setting of a poem by Heinrich Heine. Following are two Songs Without Words, a fine untitled one in G Major, and the famous Frühlingslied (Spring Song). In between them is a piece by his older sister, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, an accomplished composer with a catalog of over 450 works, some of which were originally published under Felix’s name. Like Felix, she wrote Lieder both with a sung text, and with no words, which she called Lieder für das Pianoforte. This little jewel is one of the latter, from her Opus 8. She gave it the title Lied (Lenau), a reference to the poet Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850). But with neither sung text nor poem title indicated, it is a little mysterious. A gentle sinuous melody leads to some bold modulations before returning, not in the expected tonic key but on the dominant. Only in the last few bars does it resolve to the home key. The arrangement transposes the original D-Flat Major to D Major, which lies better for strings. CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

When the engines lay to rest,When the wind becomes soft,When the birds begin to nest,When the moon shines aloft,The song of the tranquil nightWill soothe with its gentle mightAlthough I love songs with meaningful lyrics and moving music, there are times when I enjoy music without words - music that can convey colorful emotions or narratives without human words. This is my hope and my inspiration for creating this piece - a soft and gentle yet dynamic song that personifies speechless nature. The approximate runtime should range between three to four minutes, depending on the amount of liberty the player takes with tempo. While the tempo mark is Lento (60 BPM), the rubato allows the player to take liberties with tempo.I hope that you enjoy my first composition!

The Brass Player: Fantasy on Ich bin ein Musikant

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1303802 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. 21st Century,Chamber,Children,Historic,Multicultural,World. 77 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #893335. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1303802).     A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:         Oh! I’m a young musician,         From distant lands I come.         Singing and playing,         Ever I’m straying.    Also known as “I Am a Fine Musician,†“I Am a Gay Musician†and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions. The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s. As published in an 1889 collection of children’s songs, it bears the title, “Ich bin ein Musikant.â€Â That translates as “I am a musician.â€Â In the lyrics the musician claims to be “from Schwabenland†(Swabia) and to play geige (violin: “Dide schum schum schumâ€), flöte (flute: “Päde wäpp päpp päppâ€) and basse (bass: “Dide schum schum schump, päde wäpp päpp päpp). Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of.     Anyway, that’s the tune on which “The Brass Player†was built. But here, the musician is concerned only with brass. Which brass? Well, possibly trumpet. Or maybe horn in F. Or trombone. Or tuba. Or perhaps all four; certainly, all are featured in this piece.    “The Brass Player†comprises four sections. The first is in the key of C major and is played at a moderate 2/4 tempo. After a brief Trumpet/Tuba ostinato, Trombone introduces the main theme. Other instruments join in and play around with a variation or two.     The second section is a sweet, nostalgic rendition in 4/4 carried mainly by Horn in F, with help from Trumpets and Trombone.     In section three, the mood changes radically. Time signature goes to 3/4; tempo speeds up to vivace and the key changes to B Minor. All five instruments participate, and some odd things take place rhythmically at I through K (measures 200 through 262), but Tuba seems to carry the melody most of the time.    Section four, in G Major, clips along at a fast 4/4 time. It returns to the main theme and (as in “Ich bin ein Musikant†and its multitudinous derivations) presents in call-and-response form. The first few measures are straight, but discord quickly creeps in. The melody begins to include smears, flutter tonguing and off-beat rhythmic figures. There is even a brief section in G Minor. Gradually, order and theme are restored and the piece ends in a glorious, upbeat statement.    This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 398 measures, a little over nine minutes in length. There are four changes of key and four changes of time signature. Trumpet 1’s highest note is A above its staff; Trombone’s is F above the staff. Trumpet 2 has a few G-below-its-staff notes.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808696 Composed by Eduard Kremser (1838-1914). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christmas,Holiday. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4968147. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808696). We Gather Together is one of the best known Thanksgiving hymns. It originated in the Netherlands in 1597 as Wilt Heden Nu Treden, written by Adrianus Valerius to commemorate a victory in the Dutch war of liberation from Spanish oppression. It was first published in Valerius’ 1626 collection of Dutch folks songs, Nederlandtsche Gedenck-Clanck. In 1877, the Austrian composer and conductor, Eduard Kremser, published arrangements for six songs from Valerius’ collection, one of which was Wilt Heden Nu Treden. Seven years later, American musicologist Theodore Baker wrote a modern English version of the hymn. It is Baker’s words and Kremser’s melody that are today sung as We Gather Together.  This arrangement consists of six versions of the Kremser tune. The first is a fairly straightforward melody-and-harmony rendition, except that Trumpet 1 begins solo, and the other instruments join the playing group one at a time. Succeeding versions consist of variations, until the final, which, for the four upper instruments, reverts to a simple statement of melody-plus-harmony. Tuba, on the other hand, has a wonderful running bass part. The piece ends with a brief diminuendo and ritardando repetition of the last four measures. The key signature changes twice: C to D and back to C. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. As for high notes: Trumpet 1 plays one quarter-note A above its staff; Trombone has two high-F eighth-notes.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 55 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Small Ensemble Double Bass,High Voice,Multi-Percussion - Digital Download SKU: A0.1023054 Composed by Kyle Rowan. Contemporary. Score and parts. 27 pages. Penguinman Music #6097405. Published by Penguinman Music (A0.1023054). The only one of Chaucer’s works that is scientific, not literary, in nature, A Treatise on the Astrolabe represents the oldest known English-language scientific manual and is a personal manual for his son on how to use an astrolabe, an ancient astronomical instrument. The that this work was created for a practical rather than artistic purpose was particularly appealing – it called to mind Walter Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz, when Brother Francis creates an illumination of a relic of St. Leibowitz, unaware that the relic was in fact a simple, and quite ordinary, circuit diagram.Presented here are seven songs divided among four parts. The first part, Prelude, contains one song, a setting of Chaucer’s personal introduction to his son, Lewis. The second, Here Begynneth the descripcioun of thin Astrolabie, contains three songs describing various components of the astrolabe. The worken the verrey pracktik of the forseide conclusions follows with two songs explaining the use of the astrolabe to calculate the position of the sun and the time of dawn and dusk; here, the words are spoken rather than sung. Postlude concludes the work in a style reminiscent of the opening, unmeasured material, using for its text the humble conclusion to Chaucer’s introduction.I am very grateful to soprano Tiffany DuMouchelle and percussionist Steve Solook, who I first approached in 2011 about a potential Chaucer cycle, as well as bassist Scott Worthington, who came to the project later but no less enthusiastically; without their support this piece would not have been possible. With the purchase, you are authorized to print a copy of the score for each member of the ensemble for the purposes of rehearsal and performance. For best results print on 11x17 tabloid size paper, landscape orientation.

Listen to the Mocking Bird

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1148567 Composed by Music by Richard Milburn. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Country,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #748729. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1148567). Listen to the Mocking Bird was first published in 1855. The melody originated with Richard Milburn, a Philadelphia African-American who has been described variously as a panhandling busker and as a musically inclined barber. A songwriter and publisher by the name of Septimus Winner heard Milburn's tune, arranged it, added words, put it into print and claimed credit for its creation under the pseudonym Alice Hawthorne. Supposedly, Winner sold the rights to the song for five dollars. Listen to the Mocking Bird grew to be one of the most popular songs of the mid-19th century, a real hit. Its sheet music, by one estimate, sold more than 20 million copies. It was sung and performed particularly often during the Civil War, and troops used its melody as a marching tune. It remains somewhat of a standard and has been recorded numerous times, especially as a favorite of bluegrass musicians. In the lyrics, the singer is remembering his loved one. She has passed away but he recalls their good life together. They particularly enjoyed the call of the mocking bird, which even now is singing o'er her grave. This arrangement opens in E-flat major with Trumpet 1 introducing the sweetly sad melody, I'm dreaming now of Hally. After the introduction, the tempo picks up to allegro and whirls along. It does slow down several times, and there are four one-measure deviations from the 4/4 time signature: one 6/4, two 2/4s and one 1/4. At measure 65, the key changes to B-flat major for the finale. Trumpets 1 and 2 each play one A-above-their-staff eighth note as their highest pitch; the rest of the music stays well within the normal playing range of the five instruments. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 23 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1098365 Composed by Giuseppe Verdi. Arranged by Francesco Buono. Classical,Opera. Score and Parts. 121 pages. Francesco Buono #702227. Published by Francesco Buono (A0.1098365). STRIDE LA VAMPA! from II Act of “Il Trovatore†for Contralto or Mezzosoprano Voice or Bb Cornet Il Trovatore is the second opera in Giuseppe Verdi's popular trilogy created between Rigoletto and La Traviata. Il Trovatore is a drama in four acts and eight pictures, set in Spain at the beginning of the 15th century, which tells, with a beautiful expressive song, flaming passions such as love, jealousy, revenge, hatred and lust. Manrico and the Count of Luna, in love with the same woman, face each other until death as enemies, without knowing that they are brothers. Belonging to two different social classes, they only share Leonora's love which doubles the existing hatred of social conflict. STRIDE LA VAMPA! At the foot of a mountain, in a camp, some gypsies dedicated to their activities cheer their work with songs, dances and toasts (gypsy chorus: See the gloomy nocturnal remains). A pained voice bursts into the general cheerfulness: having woken up from her recurring nightmare, Azucena, mother of Manrico, tells that many years before her she saw her mother die at the stake accused of witchcraft by the old Count di Luna (Stride la vampa) . Her mother's last words had been a plea for revenge, so she had kidnapped the Count's son still in diapers and, blinded by her desperation, decided to throw him into the fire; however, horrified by the vision of her dead mother, she had confused her own son with the child she had kidnapped and had thrown him into her stake in her place.
