The piece is a very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876 by The Saturday Advertiser and judged by three prominent Melbourne musicians, with a prize of ten guineas. The winner of the competition was the Tasmanian-born John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song was first performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Princes Street, Dunedin, on Christmas Day, 1876. The Introduction of this suite is for two Cornets alone followed a full band restatement. The percussion parts include Timpani and Drum Set. There are also parts for Horns in Eb and F. Very suitable for a Wedding or a Graduation Ceremony or general performance… King William's March was composed in honor of William of Orange who had become King of England following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Clarke's better known Prince of Denmark's March which follows, honored William's brother-in-law Prince George of Denmark. Trumpet Voluntary - The most celebrated trumpet voluntary is the Prince of Denmark's March, a composition by Jeremiah Clarke written circa. 1700. It is properly a rondo for keyboard and was not originally called a trumpet voluntary. Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s most widely known folk song, and one that has been popularly suggested as a potential national anthem.The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker (swagman) making a drink of tea at a bush camp (billy) and stealing a sheep (jumbuck) to eat. When the sheep’s owner (squatter) arrives with three police officers (troopers) to arrest the worker, he drowns himself in a small lake (billabong) and goes on to haunt the site.The tune is most probably based on the traditional Scottish song Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea.The original lyrics were written in 1895 by the poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson, and it was first published as sheet music in 1903.This is a straightforward but useful arrangement for concert band and SATB Choir. NYC Traffic Jam received 1st place in the 2017 Jack Stone Award for New Music which is a national composition competition for all community college composers. It showcases my love of jazz as well as showcasing many different styles, rhythms, and melodies which are exchanged constantly throughout the piece in order to keep the listener interested.Sam Rainey is currently attending North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He intends to pursue a degree in composition at the University of Idaho.
