Ms. Grace
Brass Quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba
Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SK…
(+)
Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1202140 Composed by Johanna Hall and John Hall. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary,Disco,Hip-Hop,Pop,R & B,Rock. Score and parts. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #800795. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1202140). John Hall and his then-wife Johanna had written several hit songs for John's group, Orleans. Johanna wanted to create a song in the 1950s doo-wop style she so admired. They did, and their composition described a certain Miss Grace who enchanted the lyricist with her “satin and perfume and lace.” The problem was: that song really did not fit in with Orleans' pop rock repertoire and image. Meanwhile, The Tymes, a Philadelphia group, was looking for a number that might revive its popularity. So when the Miss Grace song was suggested they decided to take it on. This was the mid-1970s, just when the honorific Ms. was growing in use. So The Tymes changed the song's title to “Ms. Grace.” Released as a single, the song did very well in the UK, topping the chart at number one in January 1975. Written in 4/4 time, this brass quintet version flows along at about 104 BPM. Beginning notation instructs that eighth-note pairs are to be played so that the first note is about twice as long as the second; in other words, swing style. It retains the original D major key, but gives most of the melody to Horn and Trombone an octave lower so that it stays within normal playing range of the group. The nature of the song is such that there are a number of phrases that begin with off-beat pickup notes. Trumpets provide accents and flourishes and occasionally take over the melody for a few measures. Tuba really does the most work, playing through almost the entire piece. Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 3 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414088). Yes, the title is the name of the newspaper. Its new owners in 1889 wanted to celebrate with a song, so they hired John Philip Sousa, then director of the U.S. Marine Corps Band (The President's Own) to write one for them. The result was The Washington Post March, which became wildly popular (mostly a dance tune to accompany the two-step) in the U.S. and in Europe. It also led to his coronation as The March King. A British journalist so anointed him on the strength of this march (although the reporter probably made him The American March King, since Kenneth J. Alford (Colonel Bogey, etc.) was already The March King in Great Britain. Washington Post debuted in a ceremony on the grounds of the Smithsonian Institution, with President Benjamin Harrison among the throng of attendees.

Brass Quintet Baritone Horn TC,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1414066 By Will Corbin. By Edwin Eugene Bagley. Arranged by Will Corbin. March. 10 pages. Will Corbin #995836. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1414066). So the legend goes: Edward Eugene Bagley is on a train, touring with his family band from some Vermont backwater, when he composed National Emblem. He didn't like the ending he wrote, so he trashed the score. Someone in his band rescued it from the trash can. The rest of the band repaired to the baggage car (surely beer was involved in this activity) and secretly rehearsed the new march. They performed it at the band's next concert. It became the most famous (as in, the only one you've ever heard of) of Bagley's compositions and one of the most recognizable American marches. John Phillip Sousa ranked it among the top four in that category, surrounding it, of course, with his own marches. Its trio is regularly played at colors ceremonies. It even pops up in the TubaChristmas version of Jingle Bells. He sold the rights to the arrangement for $25.

The 12 songs have traditional melodies but the harmonisations are all my own. In most cases, the tunes are rather short, so would be repeated as often as necessary, with the performers varying the melody in turn, as the mood takes them. There is no set order in which to play the music, but there are 12, so that a different one can be performed on each of the 12 days of Christmas.

Published by Bright Music Company (A0.964573). 2 Trumpets in BbHorn in FTromboneTubaThere are already a couple of awesome quintet arrangements of this piece out there. So why have our own? Well…this was originally written specifically for one of our education shows (Sailing the High Seas), but we decided it’s worth putting out into the world because it’s shorter and substantially less taxing than the standard editions. This particular arrangement has been reduced to under 2 minutes, making it perfect for education shows when you want some Dixieland, but you don’t have all day. There’s enough written-in-improv lines (inspired by the Louis Armstrong recordings) to make it feel right, but without requiring actual improvisation. And, as always, there’s ample rest for the higher brass players. This piece is so painless to play that it could be put at the end of any recital, no matter how tiring, and everyone can get through this last piece while taking the audience out with some Dixieland fun.We also have a trio version of this piece!Duration: just under 2 minutes

Brahms's original work was for piano 4-hands. This brass quintet arrangement is a half step lower than Brahms's original piece, so it fits well into all of the brass parts. Higher brass all have ample rest and nothing is high or taxing. Also, the tempo changes have been written out, so there's no time wasted in rehearsal discussing how to handle tempo! The Peanut Vendor (el Manisero)

(+)
Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really: no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . . Well, you get the picture. But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style. And that’s what this is: “The Peanut Vendor” in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero” (“The Peanut Vendor”) was first recorded in the late 1920s. The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts. Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze” in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!). Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio Machín on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold. English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.” One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made. That’s a lot of peanuts. Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor” in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records. His version was completely instrumental. Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis. A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.” “The Peanut Vendor” subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times. This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets. So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody. Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba. The “shrieking dissonances” are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone. The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody. Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style. Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments. (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances” are still there!) Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Horn,Trumpet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1108151 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Chamber,Christian,Classical,Instructional,Religious. 25 pages. Regis Bookshar #710775. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1108151). Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Brass Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Bb Trumpets and 2 French Horns, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, and also to give them the chance to play this beautiful composition, something which they may not have had the opportunity to do, otherwise. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (25 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Brass Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. There are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may fine something else which may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might interest you. Please continue to check periodically because new arrangements are being added as often as possible. I'm certain that this beautiful arrangement of Mozart's Recordare, will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1158392 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Patriotic. 19 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #758673. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1158392). “Valor” offers a potent two-minute concert opener, or an attention grabber after intermission. It is also highly effective as an encore (depending on endurance, particularly of the first trumpeter and hornist), leaving the audience with a rush and energy typified by an effective encore. Besides some minor edits and formatting, the composition was completed the day I hit my ten-year anniversary of serving in the United States Air Force Bands—a fitting anthem to celebrate a decade of service to my wonderful country! The title settled the next day as I began my second decade as an Airman Musician: Valor. The best account is recorded in my personal journal on 27 April 2021: “[Valor] is the Thrower family motto from hundreds of years ago. It’s also a concept that helped get me into [Arizona State University] for my doctoral studies. [Professor] Hickman asked for a very difficult orchestral excerpt during my audition. [Béla Bartók’s “Concerto for Orchestra.”] I expressed some trepidation, but decided to give it a shot. I nailed it! Then Hickman turned to me with a big smile, ‘I give extra points for valor!’ So I’m pretty sure this little two-minute musical journal entry will keep the name ‘Valor’… as a motivational cheer for my next ten years in the Air Force. Valor! Great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. Ok, in the face of life’s many battles, Valor it is! And on to the next ten years!” The music is in AA’BA’ form. The B section is heavily influenced by the thematic material of the A section, but with a strongly contrasting mood that could be dubbed quiet dignity. A finale section follows the last A with some motivic twists from throughout the piece, decisively ending with a power that could well be accompanied by a dazzling flurry of fireworks. None of the performers get much of a reprieve throughout the two minutes packed full of notes. The first trumpet part stays in the upper mid-range for most of it, which would absolutely sparkle on an E-flat trumpet (alternate part provided). Second trumpet is also demanding. The horn part demands a decent level of mastery in the high range as well as the low range, vehemently forsaking its traditional role of off beats. The trombone and tuba parts also present their challenges, and never really stop longer than to take a breath. Although this work could conceivably be performed without percussion, doing so is strongly discouraged. The power delivered by the snare, bass, and cymbals, and even the triangle in the B section, make the part arguably indispensable.

Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1108148 Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Chamber,Christian,Classical,Instructional,Religious. 25 pages. Regis Bookshar #710771. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.1108148). Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Brass Quintet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Bb Trumpets, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library.
