My idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue 'Now is the winter of our discontent', and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s. Ten years later it took a more concrete form, when Julian Bream suggested to me that I should write a substanial new guitar work for him. More time went by, and only having finished 'We Come to the River' could I begin to realise our plan. Then began a collaboration with the instrumentalist that went through various phases, from which I gained a more profound knowledge of the technicalities and of the sound-world of the guitar. I would even go so far as to say that this collaboration gave me a new concept of how to write for an instrument with a rich tradition. The guitar is a 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable' instrument, with many limitations but also many unexplored spaces and depths within these limits. It possesses a richness of sound capable of embracing everything one might find in a gigantic contemporary orchestra. but one has to start from silence in order to notice this: one has to pause, and completely exclude noise.
The dramatis personae of this piece enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were curtain. Through masks, voices and gestures, they speak to us of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy: strange events in people's lives. Into this, the whispering voices of spirits are mingled. The epilogue is spoken by Oberon, pacified and reconciled, as though Nature had been subjected to Man.

Volume 2 of the Cellissimo series contains 25 popular original pieces for cello and piano from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras and is a real treasure trove for advanced pupils, students, teachers and cello lovers.
The cello literature comprises a lot of major standard works for lessons, concerts and competitions. Apart from classics by Vivaldi, Breval, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Faure, or Saint-Saens, the volume also contains several lesser known pieces, e.g. by August Nolck (1862-1928) and Georg Goltermann (1824-1898).
The pieces are of medium technical difficulty which corresponds to grade 3-4 or grade 5-8 of the international examination system. Some pieces can be played in the 2nd to 7th position, while several works require putting the thumb under. All selected works are particularly suitable for the development of sound, vibrato, differentiated bowing technique, as well as the performer's personal interpretation and musical presentation.
Some of the pieces come with a basso part (violoncello 2) which is available for download free of charge.

My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893?1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev?s Ballets Russes in 1912?13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphée-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902?03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908?17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912?13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien and La Boîte à joujoux by his ?angel of corrections? [?l?ange des Corrections?] André Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).
For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy?s ?compulsive achievement? could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure?s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.
It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ?write a ballet for him that he would sign? on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with André Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.
So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy?s lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts?then orchestrating them in Debussy?s style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.

Based on the Gospel of Mark, Allen Pote and Tom Long have created a 35-minute retelling of last week of Christ's life, with passionate music, riveting lyrics and narration. Performed in its entirety, the musical makes the full journey from Palm Sunday to Easter morning and climaxes with Allen Pote's blockbuster anthem "On the Third Day. " The work may be adapted to work as a Lenten cantata by omitting either or both of the first and last pieces. An other variation would be to sing the "Hosanna" on Palm Sunday, then on Good Friday the bulk of the work, saving "On the Third Day" your Easter morning service. Accompaniment may be provided by just piano, CD track, or a small instrumental ensemble composed by Mark Kellner. Allen Pote's memorable melodies interact beautifully with Tom Long's lyrics to provide a profoundly moving musical work, which perfectly commemorates the sacrificial death of Christ "At the Ninth Hour. " The Orchestration by Mark Kellner contains a Conductor's Score and parts for: 18 Handbells (A4-G7), Piano, Flute, Oboe, Horn in F, Percussion, Violins 1 & 2, Cello, Bass Guitar, and Synth String Reduction. The separate handbell part, depending on the selection, is for up to 18 bells (A4-G7).

This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 70 songs excerpted from the chapter The Lasses in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs expressing the poet's passion for his wife Jean, and for that other species. Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs, using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems, and wrote original lyrics for traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources, letters, and manuscripts to determine the origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills. This volume is illustrated with reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints. These volumes also contain a glossary of frequently appearing Scots words and insightful historical notes for each song.

Originally for piano and orchestra, I have carefully arranged the beautiful romantic themes of this piece for solo piano. I have combined the orchestral textures with the piano solo to bring them together as a cohesive piece. There is no stretches greater than an octave, and the part is heavily reduced from the original-but the piece still falls into advanced intermediate as I have kept the passion (just less notes!) Each section could easily be used as a separate piece.
The full score is 11 pages and it is nearly10 minutes long- for full suitability on level of difficulty, the youtube link provide the full score- I wanted to give opportunities for pianists to play an easier version of this fabulous piece. I made the recording live on a digital piano, with technology to enhance.
Great for valentine's day, weddings, anniversaries, romantic events, it's a firm favourite with lots of people as the themes are so memorable- just fantastic to play.

Sarah "Cellobat" Chaffee earned her bachelor's degree in cello performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and is now based in Las Vegas.
