Bizet's famous opera Carmen was controversial when it was first performed in Paris in 1875. It is a tale of lawlessness murder and immorality. The naive soldier Don José is seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen and deserts from the army only to see Carmen desert him for the glamorous toreador Escamillo.Bizet died suddenly soon after the first 'luke warm' run of performances.
