The work, set as the test-piece for the 2005 European Brass Band Championships was inspired by a theme from the second movement of Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.1 (Andante Cantabile). It consists of a number of musical metamorphoses on the theme and includes several excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Fourth and Sixth Symphonies and Romeo and Juliet. The most unconventional element of the work is instrumentation for ten tuned bottles to be played by members of the cornet section. This gives the piece an Indonesian Gamelan effect. Extreme Make-over besteht aus einer Reihe von Metamorphosen eines Themas aus Tschaikowskis bekanntem Andante cantabile (dem zweiten Satz aus dem Streichquartett Nr. 1, Op. 11). Das Hauptthema des Andante cantabile basiert auf einem russischen Volkslied. In Extreme Make-over wird das Originalthema von einem Blechblaserquartett aus zwei Cornets, Althorn und Euphonium prasentiert. Dann folgen mehrere Metamorphosen, einmal modern, einmal im neoklassizistischen Stil, gewurzt mit klassischen Zitaten. Ein Marimbaphonsolo, begleitet von unterschiedlich gestimmten Flaschen (!) bestimmt die dritte Metamorphose, bevor alle Instrumentengruppen zumfestlichen Schluss fuhren. Ein aussergewohnliches Werk!
<< Extreme Make-over est constitue d'une serie d'atmospheres musicales inspirees d'un theme du celebre Andante cantabile - second mouvement du Quatuor a Cordes ndeg 1 en Re Op. 11 (1871) - de Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovski. Au cours de l'hiver 1876, une soiree musicale en l'honneur du grand romancier Leon Tolstoi etait organisee au Conservatoire de Moscou. Apres le concert, Tchaikovski nota dans son journal : << Jamais de toute ma vie, je ne me suis senti aussi flatte, aussi fier de mon pouvoir createur qu'en voyant Leon Tolstoi, assis a mes cotes, ecouter mon Andante avec le visage inonde de larmes >>. En 1888, Tchaikovski realisa une version pourVioloncelle et Orchestre.Le theme principal de l'Andante cantabile est base sur un chant traditionnel russe. Dans Extreme Make-over, il est introduit dans sa forme originale par un quatuor de saxophones. A la reprise, les hautbois et les bassons se joignent au quatuor tandis que les clarinettes et le vibraphone s'immiscent de maniere quasi inaudible dans le discours des solistes, et elargissent chaque note de la melodie pour la faire sonner comme une pedale forte que l'on relache. La premiere metamorphose derive d'une seule note a laquelle sont ajoutees les deux notes successives du theme, jouees dans un accord sonnant comme un carillon. L'adjonction d'une seconde mineure ouvre un tout nouvel univers sonore qui vient clore cette premiere metamorphose. Prefigurant le theme canonique du finale, un solo de timbales sert de transition avec l'Alla marcia. Ce mouvement, ecrit dans un puissant style neo-classique, est assailli de references et de fragments extraits des Symphonies ndeg 4 and 6 et de l'Ouverture fantaisie de Romeo et Juliette de Tchaikovski.Le mouvement suivant introduit un groupe instrumental peu habituel : dix bouteilles accordees, jouees par des musiciens de la famille des bois.
