Inspired by the operetta successes of Jacques Offenbach in Vienna, Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) began composing his first stage works from 1860 onward. “Isabella,” his comedic opera in one act from 1869, had its premiere in Vienna. The overture features both Spanish and Viennese melodies.
