This work for soprano and cello soloists, SATB chorus and chamber orchestra was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta. the first performance was given in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, in March 1978 by Elise Ross, Christopher Van Kampen, the London Sinfonietta Chorus and the London Sinfonietta, conducted by Simon Rattle.
