Johan de Meij's first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. This transcription for brass band, arranged by the composer has the following movements: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria and The Bridge of Khazad-Dum), V. HOBBITS. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its premiere in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band ofthe Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
De eerste symfonie van Johan de Meij, The Lord of the Rings, is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige trilogie van J.R.R. Tolkien (Nederlandse vertaling: In de ban van de ring). Dit driedelige werk heeft sinds zijn verschijning in 1955 miljoenen lezers wereldwijd weten te boeien. De symfonie bestaat uit vijf afzonderlijke delen, die elk een personage of een belangrijke episode illustreren. De transcriptie voor brassband, gearrangeerd door de componist zelf, omvat de volgende delen: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria en The Bridge of Khazad-Dum), V. HOBBITS. De symfonie werd tussen maart 1984 en december 1987 geschreven. Op 15 maart 1988 vond inBrussel de premiere plaats, in een uitvoering door het Groot Harmonieorkest van de Gidsen onder leiding van Norbert Nozy. In 1989 won De Meij met zijn symfonie The Lord of the Rings de eerste prijs in de Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition te Chicago. Een jaar later werd de symfonie bekroond door het Nederlandse Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst. In 2001 vond de premiere van de versie voor symfonieorkest plaats, uitgevoerd door het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest.

HOBBITS. Die Sinfonie entstand zwischen Marz 1984 und Dezember 1987 und wurde am 15. Marz 1988 in Brussel von "TheRoyal Band of the Belgian Guides" unter der Leitung von Norbert Nozy uraufgefuhrt. 1989 wurde die Sinfonie The Lord of the Rings (Der Herr der Ringen) bei der "Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition" in Chicago mit einem ersten Preis und ein Jahr spater auch vom "Dutch Composers Fund" ausgezeichnet. 2001 wurde die Orchesterfassung der Sinfonie vom Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra uraufgefuhrt und vom London Symphony Orchestra aufgenommen.

Ecrite entre mars 1984 etdecembre 1987, la symphonie The Lord of the Rings (Le Seigneur des anneaux) a ete creee le 15 mars 1988 a Bruxelles par la Musique Royale des Guides belges, sous la baguette de Norbert Nozy. En 1989, elle a obtenu le premier prix de la Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition, a Chicago, et, un an apres, une subvention du Fonds des Compositeurs Neerlandais lui a ete accordee. En 2001, la version pour orchestre symphonique a ete creee par l'Orchestre philharmonique de Rotterdam et enregistree par l'Orchestres symphonique de Londres.
