The album contains partitas (two in Bach's own hand probably intended as a tribute to his wife), minuets, polonaises, marches and short pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, hischildren, and a few visitors to the Bach home. The volume also contains little vocal pieces, songs and chorales as well as exercises in harmony and thoroughbass realisations. The pieces are arranged chronologically (except for the last section) and several members of the Bach family helped with the copying - only Wilhelm Friedemann's hand is absent. The majority of the pieces (28 works) are in Anna Magdalena's hand, and the volume provides a tantalising glimpse into the everyday world of this musical family. Eines der lebendigsten Dokumente aus dem musikalischen Alltag der Familie Bach als originalgetreue Faksimile-Ausgabe. Die Notenbüchlein, die Johann Sebastian Bach für Mitglieder seiner Familie anlegte, sind für uns deshalb so wertvoll, weil sich hier Kunst und Leben spürbar durchdringen. Bach hat für seine zweite Frau Anna Magdalena zwei Notenbücher angelegt. Das erste 1722 ist nur fragmentarisch erhalten, das zweite entstand 1725. Von Bachs eigener Hand enthält das Notenbüchlein zu Beginn zwei große Partiten, die wohl als Widmungseintrag für seine Frau gedacht waren. Die Auswahl der übrigen Stücke stammt wahrscheinlich von Anna Magdalena selbst, deren Schrift im Notenbüchlein überwiegt. Aber auch kindlich Unbeholfenes ist zu sehen, so etwa in der Aria von der ?Tabakspfeife?, die die Handschrift des ältesten Sohnes von Anna Magdalena, Gottfried Heinrich Bach, zeigt. So ?führt uns das Klavierbüchlein mit seinem farbigen Nebeneinander von Ernst und Heiterkeit, von Zufall und tieferem Sinn lebendig in die Alltagswelt des Thomaskantors ein? (Georg von Dadelsen). Die farblich getreue Nachbildung macht das Notenbüchlein als Faksimile allen Liebhabern der Bachschen Musik zugänglich.

three suites in fragments
only, and the sixth not
at all. This is why the
numerous copies which
have come down to us, are
of special significance.
Among the copies of major
importance is the
manuscript which for a
long time had been
attributed to Bach, and
which comprises the first
for suites in full
(Deutsche
Staastsbibliothek,
Berlin) as well as the
copy by Gerber (1725-26)
and the second volume of
the Klavierbüchlein
(1925). A few manuscripts
originating from the
circle of Bach's pupils
should also be added to
them.The texts of
thevarious copies show a
lot of deviations. The
present edition relies on
the first formulation -
at least where this can
be decided at all - but
it gives all the major
devations of the copies
as variants, either in
footnotes or after the
movement concerned.
