A Descriptive Catalogue Of His Works-Ronald Crichton (1913-2005) was a highly respected music critic and writer working for the Financial Times from 1962 until his retirement in 1978. Having read French at Oxford he worked for the British Council inEurope for 26 years after the war and was always intently aware of the music of the continent. Manuel De Falla was one of his favourite composers and the subject of two of his books. The first of these ADescriptive Catalogue Of His Works (1976) is considered by many to be his Magnum Opus. An invaluable tome by one of the great Falla scholars this book is indispensable for anyone seeking to findout more about this elusive composer.

Fuego Fatuo has an interesting history. Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) often regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century wanted to write an opera based around themes from Chopin whomhe greatly admired. The stage work was never finished; however several attempts have been made to arrange the work for orchestra most successfully by the Catalan conductor Antoni Ros-Marb .Despite its history this orchestral suite is far from being a mere mish-mash of Chopin melodies; it is more of a meditation on Chopin’s work in general with the focus on the harmonic and textural elements which De Falla drew from his work.It forms a fascinating insight into the mind of a great musician.

Regarded as the greatest Spanish composer of the 20th century Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) had a distinctive nationalistic style. His 1923 puppet opera El Retablo De Maese Pedro marks the point atwhich he broadens his influences away from Andalusian music and finds inspiration from other Spanish folk genres. His ?Play within a Play? sets a scene from Don Quixote which is actually about a puppettheatre.Scored for Treble Tenor Baritone and Chamber Orchestra this 30-minute opera was immediately praised by the musical establishment of the time and paved the way for De Falla to achieve globalrecognition.

Felipe Pedrell's Canco De L'Estrella for Voice and Piano was later arranged with orchestral accompaniment by Manuel De Falla. This edition revised by Yvan Nommick includes the full orchestral score of De Falla's orchestral version and includes detailed editorial notes in Spanish.
